Guide to BTS3900 and BTS3900A SDR and RFU Co-Cabinet Slot Configuration Principles and Internal Cable Connections Internal

1 PrefaceThe GSM-UMTS (GU) co-cabinet RFU solutions to the 3900 series BTSs are used in

scenarios with various modules. In this case, the on-site data configuration, assembly,

and in-board transport are difficult to implement. To facilitate the field engineers to

allocate slots and connect RF cables and to improve the product installation

feasibility, this document describes the RFU slot configuration principles and internal

cable connections based on scenarios with co-cabinet MRFU and other modules.

This document describes basic principles for the GSM only, UMTS only, and GU co-

cabinet. Slots and cable connections are regular, which can facilitate subsequent

expansion and maintenance. It serves as a brochure to guide customers in how to

apply such basic principles. The configuration tool is developed based on this

document. It can be obtained from http://support.huawei.com. The calculation

configuration tool can fast display the configuration and cable connection figures to

assist field engineers in the product delivery.

2 Basic PrinciplesThe GRFU, DRFU, WRFU, and MRFU can be combined flexibly to form various co-

cabinet solutions to the 3900 series BTSs. This document is only for dual cabinets or

one cabinet. The cabinet is the indoor middle-sized cabinet or outdoor RFC. The

RFU, antenna system, and CPRI are involved.

The basic principles in this chapter serve as the overview of all principles. You are

advised to read this chapter beforehand to fully understand the principles and

configuration tool in this document.

2.1 Basic Configuration Principles for the RFU

The smooth upgrade and expansion principles are specified. When the

configuration parameters can be set in multiple hardware configuration modes,

you can select the optimal mode to facilitate the subsequent smooth upgrade

and expansion.

This document only describes the slot configuration principles and cable

connections for the BTS3900 and BTS3900A with MRFUs and co-cabinet

MRFU+GRFU/WRFU.

The single-cabinet or dual-cabinet described in this document indicates the

middle-sized cabinet or RFC.

This document is only used with the SRAN3.0 and SRAN5.0. The principles can

be applied to the SRAN3.0 and SRAN5.0 otherwise specified. Features

dedicated to the SRAN3.0 or SRAN5.0 are specified in this document.

2.2 Basic Configuration Principles for the Antenna System

To ensure proper connections of antenna systems, all sectors are arranged from

left to right in sequence. For example, the three sectors 900 MHz are arranged in

G1/G2/G3 and the three sectors in 1800 MHz are arranged in G7/G8/G9.

The MRFU, GRFU, and WRFU work in RX diversity mode by default. One sector

is configured with a minimum of one antenna system, which consists of two

single-polarized antennas or one dual-polarized antenna and two feeders. The

single sector with no more than two modules is configured with only one antenna

system. In the single sector with more than two modules, every two modules are

configured with one antenna system.

Each sector is configured with a minimum number of antenna systems.

The slot configuration principles and cable connections in this document are not

applied to scenarios in PBT, TX diversity, and 4-way RX diversity modes.

This document does not describe configuration principles for the BTS3900 and

BTS3900A with more than six sectors.

3 Basic Configuration Principles for the CPRI Port

3.1 Overview

3.1.1 Configuration Scope

A maximum of two cabinets are configured.

The MRFU, GRFU, DRFU, and WRFU are called RFU.

The GSM network is classified into single-band network and dual-band network.

3.1.2 Numbering Descriptions

1. The GSM only cells are numbered in sequence with the start number of G1. At

low band, cells are numbered from G1 to G6. At high band, cells are numbered

from G7 to G12.

2. The UMTS only cells are numbered in sequence with the start number of U1,

such as U1, U2, and U3.

3. The GU cells are numbered in sequence with the start number of M1, such as

M1, M2, and M3.

4. The slots are numbered in sequence with the start number of Slot0, such as

Slot0, Slot1, and Slot2. The slot can be positioned through the cabinet No. and

slot No., Slot1 of Cabinet1 for example.

5. Numbering of WBBP CPRI ports: The WBBPb and WBBPd are not

differentiated. The WBBPs in Slot3 on the BBU are numbered from left to right

with the start number of U-CPRI0. The WBBPs in Slot2 are numbered from left to

right with the start number of U-CPRI3.

6. Numbering of GSM CPRI ports: The GTMUs are consistent with ports numbered

from G-CPRI0 to G-CPRI5. The UBRIs are consistent with ports numbered from

G-CPRI6 to G-CPRI11.

3.1.3 Descriptions on Site Type Name

The configuration principles for the dual-band GSM BTSs are based on the 900 MHz

and 1800 MHz dual-band topologies. The configuration principles for 850 MHz, 1900

MHz, and other dual-band topologies are similar. In this document, the 900 MHz site

connects to 1800 MHz site by &. For example, in GSM S4/4/4&S4/4/4+UMTS S1/1/1,

GSM S4/4/4&S4/4/4 indicates that the dual-band GSM shares one site and GSM

S4/4/4&S4/4/4 shares one site with UMTS S1/1/1.

For example, in S2/2/2 (1G+1G+1G), S2/2/2 indicates the site type. G indicates the

module type. Wherein, G indicates the GRFU, W indicates the DRFU, and M

indicates the MRFU. In this case, 2G indicates two GRFUs.

3.2 Configuration Principles for the CPRI Port

7. The GTMU CPRI ports are consistent with slots in Cabinet 1 in sequence. That

is, Slot0 of Cabinet1 connects to G-CPRI0 and Slot1 connects to G-CPRI1.

8. The UBRI CPRI ports are consistent with slots in Cabinet 2 in sequence. That is,

Slot0 of Cabinet2 connects to G-CPRI6 and Slot1 connects to G-CPRI7.

9. The WBBPb CPRI ports are consistent with UMTS sectors. The WBBPb CPRI

ports are consistent with slots of Cabinet1 in sequence.

10. The slot configurations and cable connections are specified according to

scenarios. The basic configuration principles can be applied to most scenarios.

5.1 Single-Band Scenario

The SDR and other RFUs cannot be installed in one cabinet at single-band.

According to the product configuration principles, the modules at the same band must

be of the same type. If you need to configure different modules at the same band,

contact the R&D Dept. For example, at the dual-mode site (GSM 900M

S4/4/4/4+UMTS 900M S1/1/1), the GSM has four sectors and the UMTS only has

three sectors. The sector in GSM only mode must be configured with MRFUs rather

than GRFUs or DRFUs.

5.2 Dual-Band Scenarios with Co-Cabinet MRFUs and GRFUs/DRFUs

5.2.1 Scenario 4: Single-Cabinet with No More Than Three Sectors at All Bands

In this scenario, both the GSM and the UMTS are configured with no more than

three sectors and the number of modules in each sector does not exceed one. If

the number of modules exceeds one, you can refer to principles in Scenario 5.

Preferably, modules are installed according to slot and sector allocation principles. If

the allocated slots are not sufficient for modules of a certain cell, the idle slots on the

left are used. In this case, modules originally occupying such slots are removed to

next slots. For example, the 900 MHz is configured with MRFUs and 1800 MHz is

configured with GRFUs/DRFUs.

5.4 Three-band MRFU and GRFU/DRFU Sharing the Cabinet with WRFU

This chapter describes the new, swapped, or expanded sites with MRFUs. It is not

applied to scenarios expanded from DRFU/GRFU+WRFU to

DRFU/GRFU+WRFU+MRFU. If you have such special requirement, contact the R&D

Dept.

The co-cabinet MRFU+GRFU/DRFU+WRFU must be of different bands, 900 MHz

MRFU+1800 MHz GRFU+2100 MHz WRFU, for example. In this co-cabinet scenario,

more than one cabinet must be configured. In the SRAN3.0, the number of sectors

should not exceed three. Such scenario with complicated configurations is few. If you

have special requirement, contact the R&D Dept.

Different expansion paths may bring differences in the target site configurations,

which are described in this chapter.

5.4.1 New and Swapped Scenarios with Co-Cabinet MRFU, GRFU/DRFU, and WRFU

The principles are also applied to scenarios expanded from MRFU+GRFU/DRFU to

MRFU+GRFU/DRFU+WRFU.

5.4.1.1 Scenario 13: Dual-Cabinet Site with No More Than Three Sectors at All Bands

In sectors with MRFUs and DRFUs/GRFUs, each sector is configured with no more

than one module. For sectors requiring more than one such module, you need to

contact the R&D Dept.
