GUYANA Surrounded by Brazil, Venezuela, Suriname and the Atlantic Ocean, Guyana remains a South American secret whispered by pioneering nature enthusiasts and adventure travelers. A small English‐speaking country blanketed by pristine rainforests and populated by primordial biodiversity, Guyana is a wild, tangled mess of nature. Find birds and wildlife in a patch of the world’s last remaining undisturbed and unexplored rainforest. Stay in an Amerindian community and enjoy a time‐honored way of life. Visit intimate family‐ and community‐run lodges in the 5,000 square‐mile Rupununi Savannahs. Organizations like Conservation International, The Nature Conservancy, and the Smithsonian Institution use Guyana as their private scientific playground – visit to find out why. Kaieteur National Park and Kaieteur Falls Isolated in the Pakaraima Mountains, Kaieteur National Park is home to fascinating microenvironments sustained by Kaieteur Falls, where every second 30,000 gallons of water flow over a 741‐foot sheer drop 400 feet wide. Walk atop one of the world’s oldest slabs of rock in search of bright orange Guianan Cock‐of‐the‐Rock, primeval Terrestrial Tank Bromeliads, endemic Golden Dart Frogs, carnivorous plants, iridescent Blue Morpho Butterflies, and hundreds of swifts that roost behind the falls. Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation and Development At Iwokrama River Lodge and Research Centre – the hub of this million‐acre rainforest laboratory for scientific research, ecotourism, and sustainable tropical forest management – spot Jaguars and Harpy Eagles, stay with Amerindian guides and scientists studying the forest for ways to help mitigate climate change, climb Turtle Mountain to watch monkeys and macaws from above, and scour the river for snakes and Black Caiman. Visit Fair View village to study petroglyphs, process cassava, and tour a butterfly farm, then overnight at the Atta Rainforest Lodge and walk through the treetops at the Canopy Walkway. Karanambu Lodge Long famed for owner Diane McTurk’s orphaned Giant River Otter rehabilitation program, Karanambu Lodge is looking to make their 125 square miles of pristine wetlands the hub of research in the Rupununi. In 1997, the Karanambu Trust established the ranch as a nature reserve and research center focused on conserving the area’s habitats, flora and fauna, including Giant River Otters, Giant Anteaters, Black Caiman, giant Victoria amazonica water lilies, Arapaima, and 300 bird species. Karanambu is now planning a Sir David Attenborough Research Station to study climate, biodiversity, water, ecosystem services, and the impact of effective resource management on local Amerindian populations. Dadanawa Ranch Dadanawa is a multi‐faceted cattle ranch in the South Rupununi where you can spend days pursuing Anaconda, Jaguar, Harpy Eagle, Goliath Bird‐eating Tarantulas, and Guianan Cock‐of‐the‐Rock, or mount a horse and chase cattle with barefoot Amerindian cowboys. Long used as a base for scientific and conservation institutions studying the Rupununi, Dadanawa is working to establish a jaguar conservation unit. The ranch is currently home to the South Rupununi Conservation Society, which is working to protect the endangered Red Siskin and the Giant River Turtle.
