Esplanade is Singapore’s national performing arts centre and one of the busiest arts centres in the world. Since its opening in 2002, the centre has presented more than 31,000 performances, drawing an audience of 22 million patrons and 84 million visitors. This architectural icon, with its distinctive twin shells, houses world-class performance spaces complemented by a comprehensive range of professional support services. Its two main venues are the 1,600-seat Concert Hall and a Theatre with a capacity of 2,000. In March 2014, Esplanade’s Concert Hall was listed as one of the “world’s 15 most beautiful concert halls” by Hamburg-based building data company Emporis.

Esplanade’s vision is to be a performing arts centre for everyone and it seeks to enrich the lives of its community through the arts. The centre’s programming is guided by its mission – to entertain, engage, educate and inspire. Its year-long arts calendar of about 3,000 performances presented by Esplanade, its collaboration partners and hirers cater to diverse audiences in Singapore and span different cultures, languages and genres including dance, music, theatre, visual arts and more. More than 70% of the shows that take place each year at the centre are non-ticketed. In May 2015, Esplanade was chosen as one of SG Heart Map’s 50 special places.

Esplanade regularly presents world-renowned companies and artists that attract international attention and add to Singapore’s cultural vibrancy. The centre is also a popular performance home for arts groups and commercial presenters who hire its venues to stage a wide range of programmes. These carefully curated presentations complement Esplanade’s own diverse offerings for audiences.

Esplanade works in close partnership with local, regional and international artists to develop artistic capabilities, push artistic boundaries and engage audiences. The centre supports the creation of artistic content and develops technical capabilities for the industry nationally.

A warm welcome to Moonfest – A Mid-Autumn Celebration!

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a time of festive joy and harmony when friends and loved ones get together to indulge in tasty mooncakes and admire the full moon. Here at Esplanade, we celebrate this festive occasion with our annual traditional Chinese arts festival. Moonfest aims to keep Chinese traditional arts alive, especially for the younger generation, to spur their interest in these beautiful art forms.

More and more people in Singapore are taking the initiative to get involved with traditional arts. We see many parents recognising the importance of exposing their young ones to cultural traditions that connect with their roots or teach them to appreciate the different cultures in our multicultural society. At the same time, artists are working hard and adopting surprising and innovative ways to promote and develop the traditional arts.

At Moonfest, we bring these curious arts-goers and artists together through quality traditional arts presentations for everyone to enjoy and appreciate. Be it through our various ticketed shows or our extensive line-up of free performances and activities, there is something for you to enjoy with your family and friends. Don’t forget to go on our annual Lantern Walkabout on 10 Sep, or experience the grandeur of street opera at our special Moonfest Chinese Opera Stage along the waterfront over the weekend.

Since Esplanade started organising the annual Moonfest – A Mid-Autumn Celebration, spending every Mid-Autumn Festival with my family at Esplanade has become our preferred way of celebrating this traditional festival. Although many community groups organise events during this occasion too, Moonfest brings the celebration to a whole new level with its strong arts and cultural focus, and its diverse and exciting programmes. As we gather along the bustling Marina Bay waterfront under the gleaming moonlight with our lanterns in hand, enjoying the myriad of free

performances, let us take a breather from the frantic urban pace, and lose ourselves in the mesmerising world of Chinese traditional arts. As in previous years, Moonfest presents a delectable line-up of high quality traditional opera and music performances at the Esplanade Theatre and Concert Hall for all to enjoy.

Ji Wei

A renowned guzheng virtuoso, Ji Wei is an Associate Professor at the Central Conservatory of Music. She sits on the committees of the Chinese Musicians’ Association and China Nationalities Orchestra.

Ji Wei is known for her diversity in repertoire across various guzheng schools and has gained high praise for her remarkable performance technique and musical expression. She has published multiple albums, including solo albums and DVD recordings of recitals and tutorials. An experienced performer, Ji Wei has performed over 100 recitals at home and abroad, collaborating with world-class orchestras and performers. She has been awarded China’s “Golden Record of Best Performer” (2007–2009) and is also the first guzheng musician to record for Deutsche Grammophon-Gesellschaft, performing with renowned pianist, Lang Lang.

She has dedicated herself to exploring opportunities to bring guzheng onto the modern, international stage. She has produced many works combining the guzheng with other Western instruments and adding depth to the repertoire for the guzheng. For her innovation and efforts in this field, the Hong Kong magazine Jessica named her one of “The 10 Most Successful Women of 2010”. To help aspiring guzheng players, Ji Wei compiled many guzheng performing textbooks and frequently conducts master classes in China and overseas.

As a guzheng educator, Ji Wei has successfully groomed many budding guzheng virtuosos, many of whom delivered stellar results at international competitions.

Sara Heng is from Penang, Malaysia and has been playing the guzheng since 2002, She was accepted in 2014 to pursue guzheng master studies as a research student at the prestigious Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing under the tutelage of Associate Professor Ji Wei and auspices of the Beijing Government Scholarship after having graduated with a degree in guzheng at the same institution with a full scholarship from the China Scholarship Council.

She actively participated in competitions and her achievements include winning in 2014 the coveted gold medal in the International Musical Instruments Solo Competition He Yue and in overseas and local activities ranging from her involvement in China’s CCTV show and the performance leading to the 100 days countdown of Beijing Olympics 2008 to the guzheng recital of A Nocturnal Bliss in PenangPAC and invitation by the Dama Orchestra to perform various guzheng classics at the Theatre Lounge Cafe, Kuala Lumpur. She was invited to perform in several music festivals with China Reggae band LongShenDao including Strawberry Music Festival by ModernSky, World Music Festival in Ulsan, Korea, Midi Music Festival and China Music Valley International Music Festival.

Wang Qian

Young guzheng virtuoso Wang Qian started learning guzheng at a young age, under the wings of many renowned maestros. In 2013, she entered the Central Conservatory of Music majoring in guzheng. She graduated with excellent results and continued postgraduate studies with Ji Wei.

Wang Qian received Gold awards at the Japan-Korea International Zither Competition, the inaugural US-China Music Festival and the Third Golden Peony Art Competition, the Second International Youth Zither Competition in Hong Kong and the Third International National Instruments Competition in Beijing.

Wang has been active on the international stage, touring many Asian countries. At home ground, she has also performed at the major concert halls and universities, such as the National Theatre, the Great Hall of the People, Beijing Concert Hall, Forbidden City Concert Hall, Tsinghua University and Beijing University. Wang has also participated in the recording of television programmes and recordings.

Li Xueming

Young guzheng virtuoso Li Xueming started learning guzheng at the age of nine under Deng Yuntao. She studied at Wuhan Conservatory High School in 2010, under the instruction of Yin Lu, Wu Qing and Gao Yan. She was briefly taught by Sheng Le, Yang Xi and famous guzheng professor Li Meng back in Beijing. She is currently in her sophomore year at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, mentored by Yin Qun. Li is also a member of NAFA Chinese Orchestra.

Li received the Gold award at 2014 First National Festival of Dunhuang Cup (Youth), Silver awards at the Hubei Junior Torch Cup, Hubei Landscape Cup (Professional), Singapore Chinese Youth Arts Festival and the 2011 Seventh World Chinese Arts Festival (Youth) in Hong Kong. She also received Bronze awards at the 2012 Dunhuang Cup, Second Beijing International Music Competition (Professional Junior) and 2013 China International Music Competition in Hamburg, Germany.

Qian Weixiang

Qian is currently majoring in Piano at the Graduate School of the Central Conservatory of Music, under the renowned piano professor Li Qifang.

In 2003, he entered the Central Conservatory of Music primary school, where he studied under Tang Lijuan. In 2004, he was admitted directly into the Central Conservatory of Music Middle School, studying with Associate Professor Huang Yameng. In high school, Qian had the opportunity to study with Zhou Guangren and Professor Li Qifang. In 2010, he entered the Central Conservatory of Music’s Piano undergraduate programme with Professor Li Qifang. He became the only piano major to be admitted directly to the Graduate School of the Central Conservatory. Professor Zhou Guangren described his performance to be “charged with sincerity, enthusiasm and strong artistic appeal”.

Qian has received the bronze award at the Sixth Asian Chopin International Piano Competition in 2005, the Silver and Best Chinese Performance awards at the First Kadan Sa Cup National Piano Competition in 2005, and the Award of Excellence at the Fourth China Gulangyu Piano Competition in 2008.

Programme Notes

The Evening Song of FishermenThis opening piece is an all-time classic that was essential to the development of guzheng music. The melody is rich and exquisite – the cantabile lines in the adagio segment are graceful and melodious while the allegro segment depicts a swift boat breaking through the waters. Using the Chinese pentatonic scale, this number depicts the picturesque and joyful scene of fishing boats returning in the evening, against the backdrop of a beautiful sunset.

Mountain and WaterThe performers of this piece should think of himself as a painter of a Chinese ink painting. The first theme of the music is calming and composed, like the background of the painting. The second theme is brisk and lithe, mimicking the splashes of ink on paper. This ternary composition ends by returning to the first theme, as if adding the final strokes to the painting.

A Moonlit Night on the Spring RiverOne of the top ten classics in Chinese music, it was originally titled “Drums in the Setting Sun”, only to be renamed “A Moonlit Night on the Spring River” due to the popularity of a famous Tang poem of the same name. The melody is elegant and poetic. It exquisitely illustrates the stunning scenes of Jiangnan, where the moon hangs above a meandering river in the season of spring.

At Night on the Lake Beneath the Maple BridgeTang dynasty poet Zhang Ji penned the well-known poem of the same name when he passed Han Shan Temple in Suzhou. Composer Wang Jianmin based this composition on the poem, describing the sightings and thoughts of a traveller as he gazed into the autumn night.

As The Moon RisesThe moon has long since been a subject of fantasy. The ancient Chinese named it the “Palace of the Jade Toad” and thought that there were goddesses cloaked in colourful garb, dancing to heavenly melodies. A romantic classic of the Zhejiang zheng repertoire, the tune is simple yet refined, portraying the moon drifting slowly along a starry night sky.

High Mountains and Flowing WaterThis expressive composition is another classic, painting a contrasting picture of tall, majestic mountains coupled with the flowing streams.

Autumn Solitude Autumn, with its falling leaves and constant drizzle, is a melancholic time of the year. This final number is an emotional piece, portraying the forlorn and helplessness between separated lovers.

尽管不少社群团体也会趁着这个传统节日举

办一些欢聚节目，但以浓厚的艺术文化为主

题的艺满中秋却是显得格外有意义，其节目

的丰富与精彩，叫人期待！在明月照耀下，

让我们相聚于热闹的滨海湾畔，一起提灯共

乐，一起观赏免费的华族传统艺术表演；在

这中秋的夜晚，暂时放慢都市繁忙的步伐，

松懈心灵，亲近艺术。

和往年一样，艺满中秋也在剧院与音乐厅为大家安排了广受欢迎及难得一

见高水平的传统戏曲表演和音乐演出，尽善尽美的节目恭候大家的捧场！

吉炜

吉炜是中国著名古筝演奏家，中国音乐家协会古筝专家委员会理事，以及中国民族管弦乐学会理事。现任为中央音乐学院民乐系副教授兼研究生导师。

吉炜以博采各派筝家所长见著，精湛的技巧与丰富的音乐表现力获得中外音乐界的赞誉；先后出版过数十张音乐专辑，包括个人独奏音乐光碟、个人独奏现场音乐会与教学录像光碟。她荣获第七届中国金唱片最佳演奏大奖，是第一位也是唯一获颁此奖项的古筝演奏家。多年来在国内外著名音乐厅演出近百场，还曾同多个国际乐团和演奏家合作，拓展古筝艺术在世界乐坛的地位。其中世界最具权威古典唱片公司德国DG唱片（环球唱片古典部）破天荒录制的第一首古筝曲《枫桥夜泊》，便是她与著名钢琴家郎朗的协作。

这些年来，她致力于探索古筝音乐的现代化与国际化，研究与尝试古筝与其他民族乐器合作的可能性，开拓古筝音乐表现的广度和深度，尝试多种形式的创新演奏。她 的 这 一 番 努 力 ， 使 她 荣 获 2 0 0 9 年 由Jessica女性杂志评选的全球十大华人成功女性的荣誉。此外，她也负责编写出版多本古筝演奏教材，在中国及欧洲地区开办古筝大师班。

在古筝教学和演奏中长期坚持创新的吉炜，成果斐然。所教授的学生多次在国际国内权威专业演奏大赛中取得优秀成绩。

王惜盈，中央音乐学院古筝硕士研究生，师从中国古

筝名家吉炜副教授。本科时期获中国政府全额奖学金

在中央音乐学院主修民乐系古筝专业，师从著名古

筝演奏家袁莎副教授。在校期间获北京高校优秀留

学生奖项，并赢得多项奖项，如2012香港国际古筝

比赛金奖、 2014国际器乐独奏赛“禾乐奖”荣誉金

奖、2015年中国高等院校音乐教育研究会和中国音

乐基金会主办的“学院奖”全国高等院校器乐比赛金

奖。她积极参与国内外活动包括央视的音乐节目录

制、奥运会倒数计时 100 天，以及韩国蔚山世界音

乐节、迷笛音乐节、中国乐谷音乐节，还有多次应中

国雷鬼乐队“龙神道”之邀参与摩登天空举办的草莓

音乐节等。此外，她也曾受邀同大马乐团合作，在吉

隆坡的剧场酒廊咖啡厅（Theatre Lounge Cafe）

演出，深获好评、2013在马来西亚槟城表演艺术中

心举办个人古筝音乐会“听 ∙ 筝”古筝音乐会、2014

年在北京中央音乐学院举办“王惜盈古筝独奏音乐会”

、2015年在北京国家大剧院参与“春暖花开吉炜与

筝乐团”音乐会 。

王惜盈

王茜

青年古筝演奏家，自幼习琴，多年来师从多位名家名

师。2013年以全国专业第一名考入中央音乐学院民乐

系古筝专业，她的导师便是吉炜。 曾荣获韩国主办的

中日韩国际古筝大赛古筝专业少年组金奖、美国首届

中美音乐艺术节暨第三届金牡丹艺术大赛、香港第二

届国际青少年古筝大赛和北京第三届国际民族器乐大

赛的古筝专业青年组金奖。

近年来活跃于国内外音乐舞台，多次出访美、日、

韩、马来西亚和港台地区，曾先后在中国国家大剧

院、人民大会堂、北京音乐厅、中山音乐堂和清华、

北大等高校以及全国各大音乐厅，举行独奏与协奏，

广泛获得好评，并多次参与电视台节目和唱片的

录制。

钱伟翔

李雪铭

青年古筝演奏家，9岁开始习筝，启蒙于著名导师邓运

涛，2010年考入武汉音乐学院附中，师从尹璐，并多

次得吴青和高雁等名师指点。在学期间，也坚持往返

北京进修，受教于导师沈乐和杨西，以及李萌教授。

目前是新加坡南洋艺术学院大二民乐系学生，师从尹

群，同时也是南洋艺术学院民乐团成员。

她曾先后获得诸多奖项，包括首届两岸民族音乐节敦

煌杯民族乐器大赛青年组金奖、中国音乐国际大赛

（德国汉堡）民乐比赛 专业青年组铜奖、敦煌杯第

二届北京国际民族器乐大赛古筝专业少年A组铜奖、

香港中华五洲行第七届世界华人艺术节青少年专业

组银奖、湖北山水杯专业组银奖等。

现为中国中央音乐学院钢琴系研究生。钱伟翔于2003

年考入中央音乐学院附小，师从唐丽娟副教授，隔年

就以优异的成绩保送进入音乐学院附中，师从黄亚蒙

副教授。附中六年，有幸得钢琴演奏家兼教育家周广

仁、李其芳教授等的悉心指导。2010年考入中央音乐

学院本科钢琴系，继续拜师于李其芳教授门下，以优

异的成绩获得2014年钢琴专业唯一免试升入中央音乐

学院研究生部。曾经指导他的周广仁教授如此形容他

的演奏：“热情真挚，具有很强的艺术感染力”。

他曾先后在多场中国国内钢琴赛事上赢得奖项归，包

括2008年中国第四届鼓浪屿钢琴节青少年（专业）钢

琴比赛优秀奖、第一届卡丹萨杯全国钢琴比赛第二名

及最佳中国作品演奏奖、第六届亚洲萧邦国际钢琴比

赛铜奖（日本东京）等；他曾受邀参加第二届北京青

年艺术节、首届胡琴艺术节、纪念李斯特诞辰200周

年马拉松音乐会、中央音乐学院国际室内乐音乐节大

师班和第三届北京国际钢琴艺术节等。

渔舟唱晚一首对筝乐的发展有着广泛而深远影响的作品，其旋律优美而富于韵味，如歌的慢板舒缓缠绵，急骤有序的快板，如破水飞舟，俨然一幅夕阳下晚霞照映，河上轻舟渔翁捕鱼的画面。乐曲旋律以典型的五声音阶为基础，简练严谨的曲式，细致描绘出渔舟唱晚，满载而归的欢愉。

山水演奏此曲时，演奏者犹如挥毫泼墨的丹青作者，把作曲家所要表现的意境深远的水墨画境一一勾勒出来。第一主题的演奏沉凝浑朴，像是点染画作的背景；第二主题转为轻盈跳跃，像极在宣纸上飞花点翠；随后回到之前的情绪，恰似给作品做最后的润色。

春江花月夜中国古典十大名曲之一。原名《夕阳箫鼓》，后因取唐诗名篇《春江花月夜》而更名。全曲委婉优美，极富诗意，春江月夜的迷人景色和江南水乡的绰约风姿，尽在意境深远的乐篇里，悠长的乐音，更是叫人为那美好的良辰美景而心驰神往。

枫桥夜泊唐代诗人张继途经江苏苏州的寒山寺，写下千古绝句：“月落乌啼霜满天，江枫渔火对愁眠。姑苏城外寒山寺，夜半钟声到客船。”作曲家王建民根据这首诗创作的作品，表现的是一个客船夜泊者对江南深秋夜景的观察与感受。

曲目简介

月儿高月儿高高的挂在天际，古人称之为蟾宫，那里有穿着霓裳的仙女在跳舞，那里有人间难得闻得飘渺仙乐。一首充满诗情画意的浙江筝曲，古朴优雅而富于幻想，滔滔江河，涓涓细流，月儿正缓缓地度过银河……

高山流水经典古筝曲目，抒情写意，旋律典雅，韵味隽永，表现出高山雄浑、肃穆、高洁的神韵，形象的呈示了流水潺潺和高山巍巍相映成趣的意境。

远清秋秋，感怀伤时的季节，秋叶落成阵，瑟瑟秋雨寒，淡淡哀愁，丝丝眷恋。作品旋律优美，情感丰富，可那种情到深处却无言以对的苦涩，真个是“多情自古伤离别，更那堪，冷落清秋节”，叫人颇感无奈……
