Grand Valley State’s men’s and women’s track
and field teams have been competing all season
preparing themselves for the NCAA Division II
Indoor National Championships. The Lakers have
hosted eight meets in the Laker Turf Building,
with one of the biggest meets in the Midwest held
on Feb. 12-13.
The GVSU Big Meet had over 1,600 athletes
compete and over 6,300 fans in attendance over
the two days. Schools from all over the country
traveled to Allendale, Mich., to participate in the
event, including numerous Division I schools like
Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, Ohio State
and Central Michigan.
During the meet, 21 Laker Turf Building
records were broken along with a GVSU school
record. Grand Valley State’s women’s 4 x 400-
meter relay team of Chanelle Caldwell, Kayla
Vallar, Danielle Fonseca and Jade Hull, finished
second with a time of 3:45.26 to break the previ-
ous school record of 3:47.08. The relay team also
automatically qualified themselves for the NCAA
National Championships.
Caldwell also qualified in the 800-meter when
she crossed the finish line fourth at the meet with
a time of 2:10.86. Other athletes that qualified for
nationals at the GVSU Big Meet were Monica
Kinney in the mile and Liz Murphy in the
women’s 20lb. weight throw.
Kinney placed third with a time of 4:53.64,
while Murphy threw a distance of 56’11.25”,
good for eighth place. Both finished first overall
in their events among Division II athletes.
The GVSU women’s track team also has 28
athletes provisionally qualified for nationals in 10
events, along with a distance medley relay team.
Among the top of those lists are Vallar and Cald-
well in the 400-meter dash and Candice Wheat in
the 60-meter hurdles. The Lakers also have eight
runners that have hit the provisional mark in the
5000-meter run.
Head coach Jerry Baltes is very pleased with
the success of the women’s team. “Our women
have had a great indoor season to this point,”
Baltes commented. “We have a great group of
senior women that understand this is their last go
around to do something special.”
On the men’s side of the field, Matt Arm-
strong automatically qualified in the shot put with
a throw of 57’5.75”, which broke Aleksas Abro-
mavicius’ school record of 57’0.25”. Donny
Stiffler provisionally qualified for nationals in the
shot put, with a throw of 56’4.50”. He finished
sixth at the GVSU Big Meet, behind Armstrong.
In the men’s high jump, Nate Miller hit the
provisional mark placing first at the Eubanks
Open with a jump of 6’8.75”. Dennis Quinton
and Ryan Rademacher also provisionally quali-
fied for nationals in the pole vault and long jump,
respectively.
In the running events, Paul Zielinski and Ross
Faasse hit the provisional mark in the 5000-meter
run. Zielinski qualified with a time of 14:39.55,
while Faasse crossed the line at 14:46.79.
GVSU’s track and field teams hope to con-
tinue their success and use their experience at na-
tionals. “This is our second year in the Laker Turf
Building and it has been an exciting journey. We
have hosted some great meets with outstanding
competition,” said Baltes. “This has allowed our
student athletes to gain very valuable big meet
experience throughout the season. Our hope is
this will help us when we get to the NCAA
Championships.”
The Laker men and women will compete at
the NCAA Division II Indoor National Champi-
onships March 12-13 in Albuquerque, N.M.

Grand Valley State University head football
coach Matt Mitchell announced the signing of 32
student-athletes to attend and play football for the
Lakers in the fall of 2010.
"I thought our coaching staff did an outstanding
job of first identifying talent and then second re-
cruiting those kids to be a part of Grand Valley
State University and our football program," said
first-year head coach Matt Mitchell. "We always
want to recruit the state of Michigan first and I am
extremely pleased with the quality of student-ath-
lete we were able to recruit to Grand Valley State."
Grand Valley State's 2010 class consists of 32
players from the state of Michigan and from Illi-
nois.
"Our name recognition and the success of foot-
ball program enables our coaching staff to get in
on some players that are being recruited at the Di-
vision I level," Mitchell added. "It is important for
us to continue to battle those Division I schools for
those players if we want to build on our past suc-
cess."
GVSU returns 43 letterwinners in 2010, includ-
ing nine players that have started games on offense
and nine that have started on the defensive side of
the ball. GVSU is 115-8 the last nine years with
four NCAA DII National Championships (2002,
2003, 2005, 2006) and six title game appearances
(2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2009). Grand
Valley State will open the 2010 campaign Thurs-
day, Sept. 2 at 7:00 p.m. versus West Texas A&M.

Where Are They Now?How you remember him:
Callistus Eziukwu was a force on the hardwood
during his four years at Grand Valley State. From
2005-08 Eziukwu evolved from a defensive shot
blocker into a complete player that dominated the
GLIAC and earned national honors. He was a key
part of the success that saw the program advance to
the NCAA Elite Eight and earn its first-ever no. 1
national ranking. After his senior season, Callistus
was named a first-team all-american by four differ-
ent publications. He is the only player in GVSU his-
tory to be in the 1,000 point, 100 block, and the 800
rebound clubs.
What he’s doing now:
Eziukwu started his professional career in France
with Saint Vallier Basket Drome where he averaged
9.6 points per game in his first professional season.
After one year he moved on to Turkey playing for
Usakspor Belediyesi. Currently he has played in 17
games for the club and is averaging 35.5 minutes,
18.4 points, and 3.5 blocks per game. He has hit
double-digit scoring totals in every game he has
played this season and has blocked eight shots on
two occasions.

The Grand Valley State baseball program has
been as successful as any in Division II baseball
the last seven years. Head baseball coach Steve
Lyon has turned GVSU into one of the top pro-
grams in the country, regardless of region. The
Lakers are now mentioned in the same sentence as
Tampa, Central Missouri State, Delta State, Florida
Southern and Chico State to name a few as legiti-
mate World Series contenders each and every year.
GVSU is 294-95-2 since 2003 with seven GLIAC
titles, seven NCAA DII Regional appearances and
four DII World Series appearances. The Lakers are
the only team in DII baseball to advance to the DII
World Series four times since 2003 and GVSU is
one of three DII programs to appear in each of the
last seven NCAA Tournaments.
GVSU begins the 2010 season ranked fifth in
the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Associa-
tion preseason poll and Ping Collegiate baseball
poll, while the American Baseball Coaches Asso-
ciation poll ranks the Lakers 17th. GVSU will open
the season Feb. 27 at Quincy, before embarking on
a spring trip to Winter Haven, Florida where they
will play 11 games against the likes of regionally
ranked opponents St. Joseph’s College, Tampa,
Southwest Minnesota, Minnesota State-Mankato
and Nebraska-Omaha. The GLIAC slate will have
the Lakers playing each league opponent five times
before the top four teams advance to the GLIAC
Tournament May 6-8 in Chillicothe, Ohio.
“I’m excited to get outside and get the 2010 sea-
son under way,” said 12th-year head coach Steve
Lyon. “We have a solid nucleus of both pitchers
and position players returning, while I also feel we
have a number of newcomers that will make an im-
pact on the hill and in the field,” added Lyon.

Third-Team All-American honors as a junior in
2009. Gendron hit .390 with 90 hits, 62 runs

of the Year and a First-Team All-GLIAC selection,
hit .411 with 69 hits, 45 runs scored and 34 RBIs,
while fellow sophomore outfielder Steve Anderson
tallied a .394 batting average, 52 hits, 34 RBIs and
28 runs scored as a true freshman. Sophomore
catcher Jared Cowan saw a significant amount of
action behind the dish late in the year when Bobby
Walmsley injured his knee. Cowan hit .283 with 15
hits, eight runs and seven RBIs in 17 starts.
Grand Valley State returns four starting pitchers
that combined for a 22-5 record in 2009. Senior
LHP Matt Cade notched an 8-0 record with a 2.44
ERA in 59 innings pitched. Cade tallied 50 strike-
outs and walked just 14. Sophomore Kyle Schepel
ended the 2009 campaign as one of the top hurlers
on the staff, recording a 5-1 record with a 2.15
ERA in 50.1 innings pitched with 43 strikeouts.
Senior Brad Raj, who saw action both at SS and as
a starting pitcher, tallied a 3-1 mark with a 4.85
ERA on the mound, while junior Joe Jablonski
sported a 6-3 mark with a 5.21 ERA in 65.2 innings
pitched. In addition, senior Jared Knuth and soph-
omore Cory Rademacher will be key figures in the
pitching staff.
Junior Andrew Trepel, a transfer from Indiana
State, is slated to handle the duties at shortstop,
while a pair of sophomores, Brian Robinson and
Bobby Martin, will both see action at third base.
Juniors Torre Aguirre and Paul Young, a transfer
from Grand Rapids C.C., will handle the duties in
right field. Aguirre saw spot action as a sophomore,
while Young earned all-region honors at GRCC.
Junior Dan Holcomb, a RHP transfer from Evans-
ville and the 2007 Mr. Baseball for the State of
Michigan, will be a key contributor of the Lakers
on the hill.
“We really have a challenging schedule out of
the gate on the non-conference side and in the
GLIAC,” said Lyon. “We have to be ready to go
when we hit the diamond for the first time, but I
really like the blend we have on our team. We have
good leaders both on the field and on our pitching
staff and we have players that gained a great deal
of experience in key situations last season that will
help during the 2010 season.”

Q & A with Head Coach Jerry Baltes
As the track and field coach you oversee both
men and women and several different events.
What would you say is your biggest challenge in
facing such variety?
Keeping everything organized on a day-to-day
basis, and making sure every student-athlete has
every opportunity to reach their potential and be
successful.
What is the biggest difference between coaching
Cross Country and Track and Field?
In cross country we have one ultimate goal and
that is to be ready to compete to win the NCAA
Championship at the end of the year. Of course we
want to win GLIAC’s and the NCAA Regional, but
everything is focused on the NCAA Champi-
onships at the end of November. In track there are
many different focuses between events, and some
are focused on be ready for the GLIAC Champi-
onships, while we need to focus on the NCAA
Championships.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve
learned over your eleven years of coaching?
I think just to take it one day at a time, and stay
focused on helping get each person a little bit better
in hopes of them reaching their full potential. Also,
to not get too excited during the ups and don’t get
too down during the low points.
Throughout your tenure as coach of GVSU
you’ve posted some very gaudy numbers with
your athletes and have experienced so much
success, what do you attribute that to?
I have been very fortunate in that I have been
surrounded by great people every step of the way
here at GVSU. A very supportive administration,
the hardest working assistant coaches in the coun-
try, and the most giving student-athletes you could
ask for.
The GLIAC Coach of the Year award has been
given to you 28 times. Have any of those been
more special than the others?
That is a hard one to answer. I think they are all
special in that a lot of people work hard so I could
be recognized. So at the same time I do not like to
make a big deal about the award and focus more
on the accomplishments of our team.
Describe your favorite memory or proudest mo-
ment from your job?
I cherish the relationships the most. It is great
to stay in touch with our alums and see all the great
things each are doing in the real world.
Outside of GVSU Track and Field and Cross
Country, what are some of your favorite activi-
ties?
Hanging out with my family, wife Sam, and two
kids Ali (5) and Jack (2) as well as hanging out
with old college friends.
What is the best advice anyone has ever given
you?
I have had a lot of good advice sent my way
over the years, some of it I listened to right away
and some I come back to later and say I should
have listened sooner.
One thing that sticks out in my mind right now
is something Tim Selgo told me after my first year
here at GV. He told me to slow down and take rest
when you need it. At the time I was 24 and thought
he was crazy and I could keep going full speed
ahead every step of the way. Well now looking
back, being a few years older and a little more on
my plate with our family, I have to go back to that
and take it to heart more often.
Jerry Baltes is the head coach for the men’s and women’s
cross country and track and field teams at GVSU.

Recipe of the Month - Tex Mex Dip
Laker Crosser
Directions:
I usually use the 40 oz. can with beans and the
10 oz. can hot without beans. Doesn’t matter
what kind: with or without beans, hot or not,
turkey meat or not.
Important: do not substitute store brand for
Hormel. There is something special about
Hormel with this recipe.
Ingredients:
40 oz. can of Hormel Chili (drain the excess liquid off, it won’t be much)
10 oz. can of Hormel Chili (small can with beans or spicy for variety) (drain)
Two (or three) 8 oz. blocks of Philadelphia cream cheese
Optional - One lb. of ground beef, cooked with onions, drained
Two 1 lb. bags of taco chips
