Hall C – 12 GeV University MOUs
UNIVERSITY General Collaboration MOU STATUS
Hampton Univ w/NSF detector construction Complete
James Madison w/NSF detector construction Complete
MSU NSCL w/interest in Construction Univ signature routing
North Carolina A&T w/NSF detector construction Complete
William & Mary w/NSF detector construction Complete
MOUs serve both the University and JLab—•JLab: demonstrates to DoE that we have a commitment for support of those necessary items that are not part of the Project budget.•University: provides evidence to administration and funding agencies that the group is an important part of a nationally-recognized effort.
We will be developing MOUs with other groups, particularly those who will receive/spend Project funds, in the coming months.

Director’s Project Review (11/4/08) Summary report for Hall-C
2.2 Tracking Detectors Comments:None Recommendations: None
2.3 Particle Identification Systems Comments 1. The question arose if the pi/e requirements can be reached, given that reactions of the pions will give a tail that extends till under the electron peak. A report on some studies, showing the results of simulations with Geant3 of the PCAL and CAL spectra, was circulated. However, the results are not considered to be conclusive, as it looks as if there will be a considerable loss in the efficiency for electron detection when trying to reach the 1000:1 pion rejection. 2. The question arose if allowing for non-sherical mirrors would result in better light collection. 3. It was not clear what PID method will be used below 4 GeV/c. Recommendations 1. Reinvestigate the pion rejection factor and the accompanying electron efficiency, also checking how well Geant3 (or preferably Geant4) describes measured pion spectra in HMS, and re-evaluate whether the pion rejection requirements quoted by prospective experiments are really necessary.
2.4 Calorimetry Comments1. The HERMES Pb glass radiators have had their light output degraded by less than 10% due to radiation exposure. This should not present a problem. Recommendations: None
2.5 Trigger and Data Acquisition There are no significant issues. 2.6 Organization and Management Issues
Comments 1. Optics simulations to determine the best location should be done before finalizing the mechanical lay-out Recommendations:None

SS/SH Review (12/3/08)Summary of Draft Report
OBSERVATIONS
The following items are needed before the Reference Design will be ready to be sent to Procurement for the next phase:1. Approved technical requirements document.2. Approved interface document covering the interfaces between the support structure and the equipment on it (magnets, etc.).3. Drawings need to be updated to show new lead thickness and locations. They should also show the borated polyethylene
outside the lead and a typical detail for mounting the poly and lead without needing to drill holes through each lead brick.4. Provisions for removable shielding around the shield house window need to be included.5. Preliminary In-Hall Assembly Plan, including how support structure pieces need to be sized to get them into the hall and so a
crane can handle them.6. The need for more or higher capacity bogies needs to be resolved.7. Re-use of components should be finalized.8. Bearing design must be finalized.9. Areas indicated as high stress in the finite element analysis need to be resolved.10. A convergence model run is needed to verify stresses predicted by the FEA.11. Hand calculations of weld stresses are needed unless Alion verifies that all welds are in conformance with AWS or AISC design
criteria.12. Stairs/ladders should be shown as envelopes of what is needed. Designs on drawings do not comply with OSHA requirements.
Commercial stairs will be much less expensive.13. All calculations must be checked.
CONCLUSION
“The feasibility of the design for the Hall C support structure and shield house has been convincingly demonstrated. The project team is now ready to complete the Reference Design in preparation for beginning the search for a Performance Contractor.”
The Engineering Contractor delivered the corrected, final Reference Design earlier this week.
So, where do we stand?Procurements – long-lead items progressing:
Q1 Magnet – R&D Done. Plan to award construction contract this SpringHB Magnet – R&D Done. Complete review next month, then award contract in Summer.Q2/Q3/Dipole – bid package is on the street … plan to award late this year.Cryo-Control Reservoirs, Superconductor – award contracts this Summer.Carriage/Shield-House – Plan to award Design Contract late this year.
Detectors – Designed by October – MRI detectors can then proceed.
Remove SOS – May to October of 2011 (middle of Qweak run)
Structure Steel, Concrete – begin arriving/installing May, 2012Magnets, Detectors, Vacuum, Slits, etc. – install in 2012-2013
