Page 53: Hands on Advanced iMovie techniques 2013

The video “holy land”: Chroma Key or Green Screen

Page 54: Hands on Advanced iMovie techniques 2013

What you need (minimum):

Green fabric - Amazon $30.50 Extra Light! Home Depot $99

Sony VC-R640 $30

Page 55: Hands on Advanced iMovie techniques 2013

Make sure your Advanced Tools

Preferences are ON

iMovie 11 adds BLUE screen. Why? It’s just another option

No need to do this in iMovie 10.0.3

Page 56: Hands on Advanced iMovie techniques 2013

It’s not this hard!!

Page 57: Hands on Advanced iMovie techniques 2013

The Process:

1. Get your background (still or video or B roll)

2. Shoot the green screen footage with reference to the background (i.e. right, left or center)

3. Upload as normal

4. The tricky part: Put the BACKGROUND IN FIRST! It WILL fail if you do it the other way.

5. Clean it up, watch for artifacts and adjust exposure/contrast

Page 58: Hands on Advanced iMovie techniques 2013

Doing it backwards: If you put green first

NOT what you want

Page 59: Hands on Advanced iMovie techniques 2013

RULE: BACKGROUND THEN GREENSCREEN

Page 60: Hands on Advanced iMovie techniques 2013

Insert the background FIRST

Insert the overlay clip! Pick Green Screen

Page 61: Hands on Advanced iMovie techniques 2013

When it’s RIGHT!

Page 62: Hands on Advanced iMovie techniques 2013

To clean up your green screen

Page 63: Hands on Advanced iMovie techniques 2013

Last Tips

If your camera has autofocus, turn it off

USE A TRIPOD

Don’t move the camera

The background won’t move....so the camera shouldn’t

It ruins the fantasy

The camera will “hunt” to focus

In general, closer is better

Page 64: Hands on Advanced iMovie techniques 2013

Go green screen!

BONUS: Check out Color Matching

This is a SUPER way to balance color between cameras or shots
