옛 선조들의 삶의 이야기와 현대를 살아가는

우리들의 이야기가 공존하는 공간이기 때문입니다.

소설재의 상표도안은 실제 붓으로 그리고 써 한국 전통의 멋을 살렸습니다.

전통의 배색으로 연결된 기와지붕의 형상은 날아갈 듯 하늘로 뻗친 끝 모양이

실제와 같은 느낌을 줍니다.

점점 옅어지는 톤으로 표현한 기둥으로 인해 평면인 도안의 한계를 넘어

깊이감과 입체감을 느낄 수 있도록 하였습니다.

붓글씨 특유의 거친 질감과 먹의 번짐이 도드라지는 글씨는

날렵한 획들로 과한 무게감을 지워 소설재의 공간 정체성을 담아냈습니다.

Faithfully and rightly, protecting the beauty of GyeongjuChungjeong Foundation is taking the initiative in arranging and providing diverse cultural and convenience spaces for travelers and people of the beautiful city Gyeongju that has a rich history and culture. ‘Hanok Soseoljae compiled with stories’ is one of the projects carried out by the Foundation. With many more extensive projects related to Soseoljae, the Foundation aims to help make Gyeongju an international sightseeing city abundant with attractions, foods, and places to relax. Faithfully and with the right frame of mind, the Foundation is devoted to realizing its vision for Gyeongju. Thank you.

As the Chinese characters represent, Soseoljae literally means a Hanok built with stories.We named the place Soseoljae because it is space where stories of our ancestors and that of ours coexist. In fact, a brush was used for the trademark to accentuate the style of Korean traditional design. The form of tile-roof connected with traditional color scheme looks like so real as if the slightly curled up tip of the tile is about fly up to the sky. The pillar expressed with a tone in gradation effect was incorporated in the design to give the impression of depth and 3-D effect beyond the limits of a two-dimensional design. The calligraphy that highlights the rough texture and blurring of ink distinctive of traditional brush calligraphy employed swift strokes erasing excessive weight to capture the spatial identity of Soseoljae.

소설재의 마당 가운데에는 우물이 하나 있습니다.

전문가의 고증을 통해 통일신라시대의 것으로 밝혀진 이 우물은

그야말로 천 년이 넘는 세월의 하늘을 비추어왔습니다.

식수이자 생활용수였을 이 우물을 길으며 동네의 아낙들은

살아가는 이야기를 나눴을 테고, 지나가던 길손들은

한 바가지 얻어 목을 축였을 것입니다. 가족들의 식사를 만들고

개구쟁이 아이들의 손발을 씻기기도 했을 것입니다.

우리는 옛 생활의 터전,

그 중심인 이 우물가에 집을 하나 짓기로 하였습니다.

으리으리한 정승 같은 집 말고, 정겹고 따뜻한 한옥이었으면 했습니다.

탄탄한 만듦새로 아늑한 방들을 내어 경주를 찾아주신 손님들이

편히 묵어갈 수 있었으면 좋겠다, 기대하였습니다.

사람들이 살고 있었습니다. 오늘도 사람들이 살아갑니다.

그 삶의 작은 이야기들을 담아낸 한옥, 그래서 이름은 소설재입니다.

이제 이곳에 여러분의 추억과 오늘을 살아가는 이야기가

차곡차곡 쌓여가길 희망합니다.

A Hanok built with stories and a thousand-year-old wellThere is a well in the center of Soseoljae’s garden.It has been determined by specialist historical research that the well dates back to the period of united Silla. Indeed, it has been there for over a thousand years looking up the sky. The well provided water for living and drinking for the village people long ago. The village women must have chatted with one another about their daily lives while drawing water from this well. And yes, a traveler on foot must have gulped down a bucket of water drawn from this well to quench his thirst from walking miles. Meals for the family were surely prepared with this well water. The tiny hands and feet of children were washed with this well water. We decided to build a house around this well, which had been the center of living. We wanted the house to be a friendly and warm Hanok, not a 99-room tile-roofed Hanok. We wished to offer rooms, made homely and sturdy with excellent craftsmanship, to guests visiting Gyeongju for a comfortable and relaxing stay. There were people living back then. There are people living today as well.All the little stories of their lives are weaved into this Hanok. That is why it is called Soseoljae(小說齋: House of little stories) We hope you will be able to stack up your memories of past and stories of living today here at the House of Little Stories.

소설재가 터를 잡기 전부터 이 땅에는 오랜 우물과 함께

석류나무, 소나무가 심어져있었습니다.

우물은 고증을 통해 통일신라시대의 것으로 확인되어,

본래의 모습을 되찾을 수 있도록 복원하였으며,

터줏대감인 석류나무와 소나무는 잠시 따로 모셔두었다가

완공 후 제자리로 옮겨 심었습니다. 소설재의 안가 마당은

자연과 하나 되는 한옥의 매력을 그득 품고 있습니다.

pomegranate tree, pine, and the thousand-year-old wellBefore we picked out this site for Soseoljae, there was an old well, an pomegranate tree, and a pine. Based on historical research, the well was confirmed to be a well from the unified Silla and was restored to its original form. The pomegranate tree and the pine were kept at a separate place during the construction and were replanted to where they are standing now after the completion of Soseoljae. The garden of Soseoljae is filled with the charm of Hanok which becomes one with nature.

축대를 쌓아 지반을 탄탄히 하고, 그 위로 기둥을 올려 습기를 막는

선조들의 지혜를 고스란히 적용하였으며, 엄선한 미송 목재를 사용한

대들보와 서까래 등의 골격은 든든하기 이를 데 없습니다.

The warmth from a southern exposure permeates everytBuilt in the traditional Hanok architectural style, Soseoljae has a great southern exposure. We built a ground up high with embankment and placed columns above it to prevent moisture. The great wisdom of our ancestors was thoroughly observed. The structure of the girdir and rafters built with hand-picked pine lumber is extremely sturdy.

어느 날 부인이 가파른 벼랑 위에 핀 철쭉을 갖고 싶어 하자, 한 노인이 홀연히 나타나

꽃과 함께 지어 바친 노래가 바로 헌화가입니다. 우리도 모두 저마다 아름다운 사람들,

고운 꽃 한 송이 받아 마땅한 여러분께 이 공간과 향기로운 하루를 선사합니다.

Beauty that moves all creations in the worldAccording to a tale, Madam Suro in the Silla period was so beautiful that she was desired by all ethereal creatures. One day, Madam Suro saw a royal azalea on the edge of a steep cliff and wanted to have it. Right at the moment, an old man appeared out of nowhere and gave her the flower while sing this song, Heonhwaga (獻花歌: song of offering flowers). We too would like to offer this space and a day full of fragrance to our beautiful guests, who deserve to receive a stem of flower.

피리소리

서동이 선화공주의 사랑을 얻기 위해 아이들에게 부르게 했다는 서동요薯童謠.

오늘날 현실에 걸맞은 구애방법은 아니겠지만 사랑의 맺어짐에는 어떠한 한계도 없다는 그 속뜻만

큼은 새겨봄직 합니다. 선화善花의 방에 찾아주신 여러분께 서동의 재기와 선화공주의 용기,

동화 같은 사랑이 함께 하길 바랍니다.

신라 31대 신문왕은 신령스러운 대나무로 피리를 만들었는데 이것을 연주하면 병과 전쟁,

가뭄과 장마를 비롯한 나라의 근심이 모두 사라졌다 합니다.

신라의 옥적이 바로 그 ‘만파식적萬波息笛’이라 전해지는데요. 이 방을 찾아주신

모든 분들의 근심 또한 사라지고 평온한 마음으로 쉬어가시라는 바람을 이름에 담았습니다.

The wisdom to win love becomes a songSeodong-yo (薯童謠: Song of Seodong), a song that Seodong asked the children to sing to win the love of Princess Seonhwa.This might not be a way of courtship that suits today’s reality, but it surely is worth revisiting to think about the song’s underlying meaning that there is no barriers to realizing love. We hope that our guests staying at Seonhwa’s room will experience Seodong’s wisdom, Princess Seonhwa’s courage, and a fairy-tale love.

The sound of flute that quiets all worriesIt has been quoted that Sinmoon, the 31st King of Silla, made a flute out of bamboo and that the sound of this flute repelled all worries of the country from diseases and wars to drought and heavy rain. It is said that Okjeok dating from Silla is this legendary Manpasikjeok (萬波息笛). We named this room Okjeok hoping that everyone who stays in this room will have a peaceful rest without a worry.

김알지가 태어난 금궤가 있던 숲의 이름으로 그 탄생을 흰빛의 닭이 울어 알렸다고 계림이라

불리었다 하며, 이는 곧 신라의 옛 국명처럼 사용되기도 했답니다. 계림의 나무는 계절보다

일찍 단풍이 든다고도 하는데 이를 본 최지원은 신라의 시대가 저물어 감을 예언하기도 했습니다.

지금도 이 숲은 고목들이 우거지고 시내가 흐르는 생생한 모습으로 우리 곁에 남아있는데요.

천년의 전설들을 품어온 계림처럼 여러분의 추억도 오래오래 무성하길 바랍니다.

하늘에 두 개의 해가 뜨는 변괴가 있자, 왕은 제단을 쌓고 공덕 높은 이가 지나길 기다리는데

마침 길을 지나던 월명사가 인연이 되어 도솔가를 지어 바치니 미륵보살이 감동하여 변괴를

사라지게 하였다는 이야기가 전해집니다. 향가 노랫말의 속뜻에는 여러 해석이 있겠으나

꽃을 흩뿌리며 노래로 제사를 올리는 장면을 떠올려 보면 그저 아름답고 신비합니다.

꽃들에게 명하노니, 세상을 평온하게 하고 오늘을 즐겁고 행복하게 하라!

The legendary woods that marked the beginning and end of SillaGyerim is the name of the woods where the golden chest carrying baby Kim Al-ji was found. The name Gyerim (鷄林: Cock forest) was given because the legend says that a white cock informed the birth of Kim Al-ji with a big crow. This is also why the name was also used to indicate old Silla. It is said that the trees in Gyerim turn colors earlier than trees elsewhere, for which Choi Ji-won predicted the demise of Silla, interpreting it as an ominous sign. To this day, this legendary place is very much alive with old trees and brooks flowing through. Just like the woods that carry the thousand-year-old legend, we hope that your

memories will grow thick for a long time.

Singing a song of good deeds while bestrewing flowersWhen an extraordinary calamity hits Silla with two suns appearing in the sky, the King Gyeongdoek prepares an altar and prays for a person who has practiced good deeds to come and make offering to Buddha. Just in time, Monk Wolmyeong passes by and is asked to pray. Wolmyeong composes Dosolga and make an offering. Impressed by the song, Bodhisattva chases away the disaster. This is the story of Dosolga. The lyrics to this hyanga can be interpreted in many different ways, but regardless of the meaning, it is simply beautiful and mysterious to imagine the scene with a monk making an offering to Buddha singing a song and bestrewing flowers.We command you flowers to make this world peaceful and bless today with happiness.

영지에 어린 아사달 아사녀의

애사哀史

진지왕이 혼령이 되어 낳은 아들 비형랑은 이승과 저승을 자유롭게 넘나들며 도깨비와 귀신들이

두려워하며 따랐다는 전설의 인물입니다. 그래서 신라의 사람들은 집에 비형랑이

머물고 있다는 글을 써 붙여 액운과 병마를 막았답니다.

여러분의 이번 여행길에도 비형랑의 강건하고 복된 기운이 함께 해 안전하고 행복한 시간이길

기원합니다.

남편이 짓고 있을 석가탑(무영탑)이 끝내 그 그림자를 연못에 비추지 않자 외로움을 이기지 못하고

연못으로 사라졌던 아사녀와 그 뒤를 따른 아사달의 이야기에는 처연한 아름다움이 있습니다.

이 슬픈 전설이 아름답게 느껴지는 까닭은 여전히 우리 안에 사랑이 있기 때문이고 그림자가 아닌,

지금 함께 하고 있는 사람이 있기 때문일 것입니다.

A name unapproachable by misfortune and diseaseBihyeongrang, son of King Jinji’s ghost, is a legendary figure who had to power to go back and forth this world and otherworld and was followed and feared by goblins and demons. It has been said that people of Silla put up a sign on the house saying that Bihyeongrang is staying there to chase away misfortune and diseases. We hope that your journey will be safe and happy with Bihyeongrang’s robust and blessed spirit.

A sad story of Asadal and Asanyeo floating on a holy ground When Asanyeo finds that the Sakyamuni Pagoda her husband was building never casted a shadow on the pond (thus called Muyeongtap, a Pagoda with no shadow), she drowns herself in the pond unable to overcome loneliness. This sadly beautiful story ends with the death of Asadal, who learns about his wife tragic death and follows her path. We cannot help but find this sad story beautiful because we have love in our heart and the people we love beside us. Wishing your day here and now is as happy as if it will last forever.

편히 앉은 금거북이

아름다운 풍광에

잠시 머물러 모닐다

금오는 고위산과 더불어 경주 남산을 이루는 산의 이름입니다. 피어오르는 아지랑이가

저녁놀을 받으면 연분홍으로 곱게 물든다 하여 신라팔괴 중 하나로 꼽히고,

조선시대의 김시습이 은거하며 금오신화를 지은 아름답고 역사적 의미를 품은 산.

서라벌 깊숙이 들어앉아 백성들의 삶을 지혜롭게 굽어살피는 금거북이의 상서로운 기운이

여러분이 머무는 이 방에 가득하길 바라는 마음입니다.

금장대는 경주의 시가지를 한 눈에 내려다 볼 수 있는 신라의 건축물로,

주변에 펼쳐진 풍광이 너무나도 아름다워 길을 떠나던 기러기들마저 잠시 머물면서

노닐다 간다고 합니다. 그 모습이 신기하여 신라의 8괴 중 하나인 금장낙안(金藏落雁)이라는

말이 있습니다. 가치 높은 문화유산과 더불어 유려한 경치가 있는 경주에서 여러분 역시

마음껏 노닐다 가시라는 마음을 담아 이 안락한 방의 이름을 낙안이라 지었습니다.

A golden turtle sitting comfortably deep inside Seorabeol Geomo is the name of a mountain located in Gyeongju. Along with Goweesan Mountain, it forms a part of Namsan Mountain. It is counted as one of Silla’s Eight Mysterious Sights for its beautiful sight of haze emitting a light pink hue under the sunset. It also bears a historical meaning for Kim Shi-seup retired to hermitage in that mountain and wrote Geumo Sinhwa. We hope that this room is filled with the auspicious energy of the golden turtle sitting deep inside Seorabeol and wisely looking over the lives of its people.

Geumjangdae is a Silla structure that overlooks the entire Gyeongju city. People say that the view surrounding the structure is so beautiful that geese hover flock over the area for a while on their way south. The sight of geese flocking on Geumjangdae is such a marvel that the term Geumjanglakan (金藏落雁: geese falling on Geamjang) was coined to note this marvelous sight as one of Silla’s Eight Mysterious Sights.We named this comfortable room Nakan with hopes that you too will enjoy your time at Gyeongju that has beautiful sceneries and valuable cultural heritage.

That is why we prepared a special breakfast based on Korean cuisine. The food is easy on your stomach, convenient to eat, filling and tasty. Wishing nothing but sweet dreams on your clean beddingBecause we know how important beddings are to people traveling, we made sure that the beddings at Soseoljae are as special as our Hanok house. They are made of muslin that is fine and smooth in texture and feels soft to the skin. Combined with ondol of Hankok, they are most comfortable. With the help of Goryeojudan, specializing in Korean traditional boudoir handicraft for two generations, the beddings were designed and prepared to emphasize elegant beauty. 교촌한옥마을 등이 인근에 있고 찾아가길 희망하시는 여러 사적지들로

이동이 편리해 여행의 이동시간을 절약하고 고단함도 줄일 수 있는

좋은 터에 자리를 잡고 있습니다.

Soseoljae is located in Hwangnam-dong, Gyeongju City. Gyeongju’s proud World Heritage sites such as

Daereungwon Ancient Tombs, Cheomseongdae Observatory, and Gyochon Hanok Village are located in the

vicinity. Transportation to other historic sites you might want to visit is convenient from our guesthouse.

Soseoljae is located at a great location where you can save travel time and have more time to enjoy and rest.
