Happy New Year 2018!

Dear Okinawa Tomono Kai of Ohio mem-bers, your families and friends, Happy New year to you!

This is June McVey. I am your newly elected president of the Kai. I am honored to be your president and I will do my best to do the presi-dent’s duties and sup-

port you and this Kai together with your officers’ and treasures. If you have any suggestions to improve our Kai and com-munications, please let us know. I take this opportunity to thank Kazumi Makowski as our vice president, John Volkmar as our treasurer, Satoko Kort-landt as our entertainment coordinator and Tom McVey as our secretary. WORLD UCHINANCHU DAY

世界のウチナンチュの日

In 2016, The Okinawa Prefecture announced that October 30 is World Uchinanchu Day. We would like to celebrate that date. Since this day falls into a weekday, we will celebrate it on the week-end.

第5回世界のウチナンチュ大会開催された2016年に、

沖縄県は10月30日を「世界のウチナンチュの日」に

決定しました。オハイオ州友の会もその日にお祝い

をしたいと思います。その日が平日になりますの

で、お祝いはその前後どちらかの週末に行う予定で

す。

Year of the Dog 戌年（いぬどし）

In Japanese, a dog is “inu” in romaji, and is written as “犬” in

kanji. In the Japanese Zodiac, however, it is written as “戌”.

The dog is the eleventh symbol in the Japanese zodiac. Leg-

end has it that the dog had a fight with the monkey on their

way to God and the rooster had to act as a peacemaker, so

they arrived in a row. This symbol represents “diligence” and

“devotion”.

Personality Traits

Dogs are patient, strong-willed, and honest. They have a sense of duty and loyalty, and always strive to succeed. However, they are also very stubborn, and do not like to admit their own faults.

We want to know if you’re over 60 and were born in the year of dog. We’d like to announce at the Spring Celebration because it’s a tradition to celebrate in Japan for people who were born in the year of its zodiac.

In Motobu town of Motobu peninsula located in the northern area of Okinawa Island, “The Cherry Blossom Festival” is held from Jan 20 through Feb 4, 2018. Bright colors of about 7,000 cherry trees from skirts to the top of 435 meter-high Mount Yae would amuse eyes of visitors.

The 40th

Sakura Festival

in Okinawa

June and Tom McVey are planning to visit Motobu to see the Cherry Blossom Festival in January. They will be posting photos on our Kai Facebook page.

Tomono Kai Spring Celebration Date and Location This year is the 23nd Anniversary for the Okinawa Tomonokai of Ohio. As in the past, we are planning a special luncheon with performances to celebrate this event. After the long search, we have finalized both date and location. We will hold the celebration at the Capital City on May 5, 2018 at 11am. This is the same location where we had this annual event 3 years ago. The address is 1290 Old Hen-derson Road, Columbus OH 43220. It is located close to Tensuke Market. Here is a map of the lo-cation. We need your help as you see below. We think this will be something you will not want to miss. Spring Celebration Volunteers -We will need volunteers to plan, make arrangements and help to organize the event. Here are some of the committees that we have so far: Program; Advertisement;

Entertainment (Satoko Kortlandt); Food;

Reception desk; Setup Crew; Stage Crew; Etc. We hope you will see an area where you will be able to help or lead a committee. Please con-tact me to get more information about what you can do to help us plan and execute the best Spring Celebration possible. Kazumi Makowski, Vice President

〝春の集い″ の開催日と場所

オハイオ州沖縄友の会は今年、23 回目の春の集いを

開催します。これまでのように、今回も特別ランチ

とパフォーマンスで祝うイベントを考えています。

去年と同様に、今年も会場探しに時間がかかりまし

たが、以下の場所に決定しました。

場所：Capital City Church

期日: 5 月5 日（土）午前11 時 開演 素晴らしい出し物が着々と準備されていますが、皆

さんが持ち寄る「ポットラック」(一品料理)も楽し

みの一つです。皆さん奮ってご参加下さい。また、

イベントの成功には、次のようなボランティアが必

要です。

・プログラム作成

・広告

・エンターテイメント（里子Kortlandt）

・お食事係

・会場作り

・音響・設備

・司会・進行係

・受付係り

以上の役割の中で、皆さんが興味のあるものに是非

ご参加そして、ご支援いただければと願っていま

す。ご希望される方は、直接私にご連絡下さるよう

お願いします。 私たちみんなの力で素晴らしいイ

ベントを作っていきましょう。

The Okinawa Kai of Washington D.C. will be cel-ebrating their 35th anniversary on April 21, 2018 Location: Glasgow School in Alexandria, VA The Jacksonville Okinawa Kenjinkai will be cel-ebrating their 30th anniversary on March 10, 2018. 2017 Picnic Photos

23th Eisa Celebration and Picnic The 2018 EISA Celebration and picnic will held be on Sat-urday, September 8th at the High banks Northern shelter in Lewis Center Ohio. Please bring your favorite covered dish or desert to share. The Kai will pro-vide the hot dogs, burgers and bottled water. Please bring your own non water drinks, such as sodas or juices. This picnic is Free to Members – Guests are only $5 per adult. Please invite your friends and neigh-bors. If you bring guests, please bring extra food. The highlight of this picnic will be the Eisa dance.

There will also be games and door prizes. Please

mark your calendar, invite your friends and get pre-

pared for a nice picnic at the Highbanks Park.
