Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Harlow Campus is situated in the quaint, historic town of Old Harlow, Essex. Midway between London and Cambridge, it is linked to both cities by road and mainline railway (approximately 40 minutes from each by rail).

The campus consists of a group of 19th-Century and older buildings. The main building is The Maltings that houses the administration offices as well as accommodation for 41 residents. It also contains a dining room, resources room, common room, student kitchens, laundry facilities and the Lord Taylor lecture room. Cabot House is a 17th-Century cottage that can accommodate 10 residents.

St John’s House is a former Victorian school house, which houses the main lecture room and accommodation for faculty. Self-contained two-bedroom apartments, close to campus at 44 & 46 Market Street are used by faculty or those on vacation.

Harlow Campus is used by Memorial University’s professional schools and other academic departments to offer programs. The campus is also available as a base for faculty members and graduate students conducting research or further study in the UK.

WELCOME


In 1967 Lord Stephen Taylor of Harlow was asked by Newfoundland Premier Joseph Smallwood to become president and vice-chancellor of Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Upon accepting and taking up this position, Lord Taylor said:

“I think it would be rather fitting if the oldest town in the New World were linked to the newest town in the Old World.”

HISTORYHARLOW CAMPUS

1968 In 1968 Memorial purchased a former brewery, The Maltings, at Harlow, England, and renovated it into living quarters for 33 students. Also at this time a former Victorian school house, St John’s House, was purchased and converted into faculty accommodation. The first Memorial University students came to Harlow in January 1969, to carry out education and engineering internships in Harlow factories and schools over one semester.

1973In 1973 a former butcher’s shop and flat in Market Street were acquired and converted into two apartments, each accommodating four in twin rooms for the use of faculty and their families.

1988An extension was built onto the north side of The Maltings in 1988 to provide increased office space and a library; the quiet room and small TV room were converted into a lecture room and small computer room.

1997In 1997 the university acquired St John’s Cottage, located next to The Maltings and dating from 1650. Originally three workers’ cottages, they were converted into one house in the early 1960s, providing accommodation for 10 students, with a sitting room, dining room, kitchen, utility, study and shared bathroom/shower facilities.

The name of the building was changed to Cabot House in recognition of the 500th anniversary of John Cabot’s discovery of Newfoundland, which coincided with the 50th anniversary of Harlow as a town.


Education internships in local Harlow schools, a practice that still continues. The campus is now used by undergraduate students from Newfoundland who wish to study for a semester or complete a work placement abroad, as well as by faculty members and graduate students engaging in research and/or further study. Programs that have been offered at Harlow include social work, engineering, business, nursing, medicine and pharmacy. The Faculty of Arts offers both a summer program and an arts semester at Harlow for students.

2002In May 2002 the campus closed for four months to enable major refurbishment of The Maltings to accommodate 51 students in The Maltings and Cabot House, and three faculty and their families in 44 & 46 Market Street and St. John’s Cottage.

2007Since April 1968, Harlow Campus had been governed by the Harlow Campus Trust, which directed the facilities on behalf of Memorial. In April 2007 the Harlow Campus Trust was dissolved and replaced with MUN (UK) LTD., a company limited by guarantee. MUN (UK) LTD. has a board of directors who meet at least twice a year to direct the operations of the campus. Under this arrangement, Harlow Campus is run by a general manager who operates the campus for students in academic (credit) and professional development (non-credit) programs. All programs are developed and overseen from St John’s by the vice-president (academic).


The Maltings


ACCOMMODATIONTHE MALTINGS

Formerly used for drying grain, this four-storey, converted 19th-Century maltings, is now fully modernized and houses the main office, dining and laundry facilities.

• 14 standard twin bedrooms with ensuite shower and toilets (rooms are convertible to single accommodation if required). Approximately 14.86 sq m.

• 6 large twin bedrooms with ensuite shower and toilets (rooms are convertible to single accommodation if required). Approximately 21.37 sq m.

• 1 purpose designed wheelchair-accessible bedroom with ensuite shower and toilet.

• All rooms include bedding, towels, telephones, computer access points, hair dryer, radio alarm clocks and desks.

Bedrooms

• 2 single rooms on the ground floor with shared washroom facilities. Rooms can be used as single accommodation if required.

• 4 twin bedrooms on the first floor with shared washroom facilities. Rooms can be used as single accommodation if required.

• All rooms include bedding, towels, telephones, computer access points, hair dryer and radio alarm clocks.


ACCOMMODATIONCABOT HOUSE

This two-storey, 17th-Century cottage is a self-contained residence. While it has retained its antique charm, it is now equipped with kitchen, dining room, TV lounge, computer area and study area.


ACCOMMODATIONST. JOHN’S HOUSE

Formerly a Victorian school building dating back to 1870, St. John’s House has been converted into a lecture room and faculty office.

St. John’s House is the main lecture hall, fully networked with audio-visual connectivity and wired and wireless internet. The facility has flexible seating which can comfortably accommodate up to 30 students/delegates

St. John’s House also has the benefit of a fully enclosed patio garden.

ACCOMMODATION44/46 Market Street

Formerly a butcher’s shop and flat, this property was acquired in 1973 and converted into two apartments.

44 Market Street – is a self-contained two-bedroom apartment close to the main campus buildings.

Facilities include a fully equipped kitchen, lounge area with TV, wired and wireless internet, two twin-bedded rooms and separate shower room and toilet.

46 Market Street – has all the same facilities as 44 but with one double-bedded room and one twin-bedded room.

These properties are mainly used by faculty, but can be rented out for holiday residents when not in use.

St John’s Cottage is a two-storey building with a fully equipped kitchen, sitting room, dining room, wired and wireless internet with study area, and a small courtyard area to the rear of the property.

On the first floor it has one double-bedded room, one twin-bedded room, and bathroom. This property is mainly used by faculty, but can also be rented out for holiday residents.

SCHOLARSHIPS & BURSARIES HOW TO APPLYAll students who are thinking of studying at Harlow are eligible to apply for the following scholarships or bursaries.


Portals Dining Room Portals presents a good quality varied menu every weekday evening for all residents to enjoy.

Common Room The Common Room is a large and comfortable room for students to meet, relax, watch TV or a DVD and even play the piano.

Laundry Room The laundry room houses front loading automatic washing machines and dryers. All are coin operated at a cost of £1.20 per wash and £1.20 per dry. Irons and ironing boards are available. Campus staff are always happy to give a quick lesson in how to operate the washing machines!

Student kitchens The Maltings houses two student kitchens that provide food storage, cooking facilities and a small dining area. Both kitchens are fully equipped.

Resources room The library and small computer suite are located here. An area of the room designed to be a quiet space, contains study cubicles with internet connection points for laptop computers (not provided) and comfortable seating.

The library divides this quiet area from the computer section with eight fully networked desktop computers and a printer. Harlow Campus has wired and wireless internet access.

Provision can be made for students or faculty who are visually impaired (where sight cannot be corrected with glasses). At least three months’ notice must be given directly to the campus manager stating all requirements. It must be noted that while every effort will be made to meet specific requirements, we cannot guarantee to satisfy all needs.

SERVICES THE MALTINGS


The residence is fully networked with a telephone and wired and wirelessinternet. There are also two networked desktop computers with a printer.The laundry facilities are located in the main Maltings residence.The kitchen/dining room includes an electric cooker, fridge, freezer and food storage space, plus fully equipped kitchen utensils and china.

Harlow Mill

Harlow Mill station is a seven minute walk away from the campus and Market Street. The train to London Liverpool Street takes about 40 minutes.

OLD HARLOW AROUND THE AREA


Opposite High Street runs Fore Street and Market Street, where there are three of the Old Town pubs: The Chequers, the Marquis of Granby and the Crown. The Crown has a wall of medieval painting, dating back to the 17th-Century.
