Devotion from Dr. Allen Stewart OUR PRAYER MINISTRY

St. Teresa of Avila* was a Carmelite num and mystic that lived

in the 16th century. Her writings and theological works are quite

impressive and speak to us as if she were writing them to us to-

day. Over the years I have used her prayers and I was looking at

some of her writings in my study and came across these two

prayers that I felt were meaningful to me and would be to you as

well. She believed and wrote that God could be found and seen in the most

mundane of actions. As a young nun, she felt that the activities of monastic life,

washing dishes, planting vegetables, ironing, and folding sheets, was counterintui-

tive to the life of one devoted to Christ in our world.

As she matured, she developed a sense of gratitude for her ability to work IN the

Lord and eventually wrote about seeing God in the sheets she ironed and in the

pots she washed. It was a distinct reality that God is everywhere and can and

would be seen in all things, even in the mundane.

As we live out this threat, and others that may come, we can see God in and

through it. I believe that God will use this to magnify God’s holy name and help

us define what the Church is all about. If we look closely, God can be visible in

the grocery bags we carry for others and in the milk we take down the street. It is

only in our silence and isolation to the outside world, that darkness is found.

Please be light and salt!!

“Christ has no body now, but yours. No hands, no feet on earth,

but yours. Yours are the eyes through which Christ looks compas-

sion into the world. Yours are the feet with which Christ walks to

do good. Yours are the hands with which Christ blesses the

world.” – St. Teresa of Avila

“May today there be peace within. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content knowing you are a child of God. Let this presence settle into your bones, and al-low your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us.” – St. Teresa of Avila

*Teresa of Ávila, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus (1515 – 1582), was a Spanish

noblewoman who felt called to monastic life in the Catholic Church. A Carmelite

nun, prominent Spanish mystic, religious reformer, author, theologian of the con-

templative life and mental prayer. She earned the rare distinction of being de-

clared a Doctor of the Church over four centuries after her death. Active during

the Catholic Reformation, she reformed the Carmelite Orders of both women and

men. For more information: Google St. Teresa of Avila
