25 Carl’s Gate (Karlstor)The triumphal arch honoring Prince-Elector Carl Theodor was erected on the east end of Heidelberg between 1775 and 1781 by Nicolas de Pigage.

26 Carl’s Square (Karlsplatz)Named after the Grand Duke Carl Friedrich of Baden, Carl’s Square is a city square covering the site of a Franciscan monastery torn down in 1803. There is a wonderful unob-structed view of the Castle from the square. Heidelberg’s Academy of Sciences and the Palais Boisserée face each other across the square.

27 Grain Market (Kornmarkt)The former marketplace is domi-nated by the victorious 18th century statue of the Madonna with Child. The Palais Graimberg is located below the Castle and is named after Duke Charles de Graimberg who in the 19th century was instrumental in preserving the Castle ruins and making them internationally famous. In the Palais Prince Charles on the east side of the square is the historic Spiegelsaal (Hall of Mirrors), used as a venue for events.

28 University Square (Universitätsplatz)University Square is located on the former city border, the final vestige of which is the street named Graben-gasse.The square is dominated by the Old and New University. Inaugurated in 1931, construction of the New University building was enabled by a donation fund organized in the US by Jacob Gould Schurman (former US ambassador and Heidelberg student). The Witch Tower (Hexenturm) in the inner courtyard was once part of the Old Town wall and subsequently a prison for women. The Martin Luther memorial plaque on University Square commemorates Luther’s 1518 visit to the Augustinian chapter of his order once located here.

29 Hotel “Zum Ritter St. Georg”One of Heidelberg’s few patrician mansions to survive the destruction of the War of the Palatine Succession, the building was used as the city hall for a short period after that conflict. Ever since the building has been a tra-ditional hotel and restaurant which still welcomes guests from around the world even today. The façade is finely decorated with ornamentation, its construction was commissioned in 1592, in the Late Renaissance, by French cloth merchant Charles Belier. The knightly figure of Saint George gracing the pointed gable gives the building its name. The builder im-mortalized himself by embellishing the façade with portraits of his family and a coat-of-arms with a ram (“bélier” means “ram” in French).

Erected between 1706 and 1709, the Hercules Fountain commemorates the con-siderable efforts required to rebuild the city after the devastation of the Thirty Years’ War.There is a Tourist Information office located in the Town Hall, where visitors can obtain tickets for guided tours of the city, the HeidelbergBe-WelcomeCARD and will find a wealth of information about Heidelberg.

32 Carl Theodor Bridge (Old Bridge) (Karl-Theodor-Brücke (Alte Brücke))With its bridge gate which once formed a part of the Old Town wall, the stone bridge has always been considered one of Heidelberg‘s outstanding architectural landmarks. Here the statues of Carl Theodor (who built the bridge and who the bridge is named after) and the god-dess of wisdom Pallas Athena hold sway over the Neckar. The statue of the monkey put back up in the ‘70s on the Old Town end of the bridge is one of the city’s most popular photo opportunities. The first pillar of the bridge records the high-water marks from flooding over the centuries.

34 Philosophers’ Walk (Philosophenweg)This famed walking path on the sunny Heiligenberg hillside has inspired many a scholar. The Philosophers’ Walk extends from the Theodor Heuss Bridge up to the small Philosophers’ garden. The many benches along the path offer views of the Castle and city from the “Merianausblick” outlook. The copperplate engraving by Matthäus Merian captured a panoramic vista of Heidelberg from 1620. The sun-soaked hillside is also home to many Mediterranean plants and sun-loving animals including rare lizards. The path is a recreation trail within easy reach of the city. The path can also be reached from the Old Bridge via the winding snake path (Schlangenweg).

35 Stables (Marstall)The building was originally the Cas-tle armory and used as stables and for storing carriages and saddlery. Later the Marstall was also used as barracks and later as a hospital. Since 1971 the building has been used as a lecture hall for Heidelberg Univer-sity and also houses the university cafeteria.

36 Hay Barn (Heuscheuer)The Hay Barn once provided the neighboring royal stables with hay. The building was later used as a mu-nicipal warehouse. Stairways leading to earlier tower fortifications were found in 1963 during work to convert the Hay Barn into a university lecture hall. One of the stairways can still be viewed today.

Located directly along the Neckar in the heart of the Old Town, known today as the Heidelberg Convention Center, the building’s neoclassical red sandstone architecture is distinc-tive in the city’s appearance. The south side of the building features portraits of Heidelberg professors and famous artists. The historic building is highly popular as a unique site for conventions, meetings, and cultural events and also the center-piece of the urban development project “City on the River”.

The Church of the Holy Spirit was built starting in 1400 by Rupert I, the only Prince-Elector who was also King of Germany, as a burial place and collegiate church. Among the hall-church’s prominent character-istics are the galleries where the “Bibliotheca Palatina” was once housed as a chained library until it

was seized and taken to the Vatican during the Thirty Years’ War.Today the Church of the Holy Spirit is the city’s main Protestant Lutheran church and attracts many visi-tors with its concerts and worship services.

Starting in 1712 construction of the Baroque three-aisle hall-church lasted about 150 years because of repeated interruptions to building work. The three cardinal virtues of “faith, love, hope” and the found-ers of the Jesuit order, who were in Heidelberg until 1773, adorning the façade lend the building a Mediterra-nean quality. Today the church’s inte-rior is impressive for the ample light allowed into the nave by the large windows. In 2009 the Jesuit Church celebrated its 250th anniversary.

Churches and Monasteries

Interdenominational disputes between the Reformed Protestant and Catholic churches have played an important part in church history into the 20th century. The creation of the Heidelberg Catechism in 1563 – a confession of faith still important in Reformed Christian doctrine today – emphasizes the important role Heidelberg has played in religion.

A basilica was standing at the present location of the church as early as the 12th century. Construction of the Late Gothic St. Peter’s Church began in 1485 and through the centuries its outward appearance has changed many times. Today it has many gravestones located both inside and outside the church. One of the most well-known is that of Marsilius von Inghen, the first presi-dent of Heidelberg University. Many concerts are performed there due to the church’s excellent acoustics.

The Benedictine Abbey was founded in 1130 as a priory of the Lorsch Abbey and suffered from economic hardship throughout its existence until, as a nunnery, it was suppressed in 1562. Monks observing the Rule of St. Benedict began a community there again starting in 1927. The Ab-bey grounds include a farmer’s mar-ket offering organic produce from the region and a microbrewery. Beer is brewed here year-round following age-old brewing tradition. The beer garden, a trout farm and the world-famous ivy cultivation invite visitors.

46 St. Michael and St. Stephen Abbey Ruins (Michaelskloster and Stephanskloster)There are two abbey ruins on top of the Heiligenberg. The earlier monas-tery of St. Michael was founded as a sister abbey of Lorsch Abbey in the 9th century and built on the founda-tions of earlier Celtic and Roman temple ruins. The monastic site was abandoned in the 16th century. In the 11th century the Abbey of St. Stephen was built by the Benedictine monk Arnold. The abbey was extended and was economically self-sufficient. Today, all that remains of the abbeys are traces of their foundations.

47 HeiligenbergNowhere else does the history of Heidelberg reach as far back into the past as it does on the 330 m (1,083 ft) Heiligenberg. Celts first settled here in 400 BC and built a ring wall part of which still exists today. Then, about 500 years later, in around 80 AD the Romans followed and built a temple to Mercury as part of their cultic Mithraic practice. Over the cen-turies since then the mountain has played an important role as a reli-gious site. Today visitors can walk the many paths leading to the summit of the Heiligenberg and there view the ruins of the St. Michael and St. Stephen abbeys as well as the large open-air amphitheater (Thing-stätte) dating from the Nazi regime.

Recreational activities and excursions

BergstrasseWhen almond and cherry trees are in bloom, the hillsides of in the Odenwald region on the Berg-strasse take on a nearly Mediter-ranean quality. The site of former Roman settlements, Ladenburg and Weinheim, with its picturesquemarket square and enchantingcastle park, are among the most attractive stops on a trip along the historic “mountain road.”

The Castle RoadIt runs for just under a 1,000 kilo-meters from the Prince-Elector’s residence city of Mannheim in the west to the “golden city” of Prague in the east. The route takes you through picture-book landscapes:

picturesque cities, unique build-ing monuments and imposing castles and fortresses mark the way. Through these historic locations a part of the past has survived, and they have a story to tell.

Dilsberg The Castle stronghold which can be seen from afar in the Neckar Valley on a long slow bend in the river is worth a closer look.

Neckargemünd The city can look back on over a thousand years of history. Numerous half-timbered houses and the old city wall are visible reminders of a fabled past.

The Heidelberg region

Heidelberg is located within a very attractive area which can be discov-ered on many different excursions and activities. Here are some destina-tions within the region:

Dilsberg64

Neckarsteinach The four medieval fortresses stand-ing in a row along the Neckar in this historic city make it a favorite destination. The walking trails to the fortresses are well marked and hikers are rewarded with a fabulous view.

SchwetzingenThe former residence of the Prince-Elector Carl Theodor, Schwetzingen Castle, and its wonderful gardens are the unmistakable focal point of the region’s “asparagus capital”. The castle gardens are considered some of the most beautiful park land-scapes in Europe.

SinsheimThe Auto & Technik Museum not only has spectacular aircraft such as the Concorde awaiting visitors, but

also a comprehensive collection of antique cars, locomotives, and steam engines. Since 2009 there has been a further attraction in Sinsheim – the Rhine-Neckar Arena, the new home stadium of Germany’s top division TSG 1899 Hoffenheim soccer club.

MannheimAll the options normally found in a large modern city and the largest Baroque castle in Germany are found in nearby Mannheim. The town’s most important landmark is the art nouveau Wasserturm (water tower) at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar. The city’s many theaters, museums, galleries, and concert halls testify to the wide variety of cultural events offered in Mannheim.

Speyer Over 2,000 years old, this city on the Rhine and its impressive architecture have figured prominently in German and European history. The imperial cathedral (Kaiserdom zu Speyer) is one of the largest and most impor-tant Romanesque structures in Europe and has been a listed

UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. The Memorial Church of the Protestation (Gedächtniskirche der Protestation) and the Jewish court-yard (Judenhof) are also well worth visiting.

WormsMartin Luther is very important to the history of Worms, as the world’s largest Reformation monument em-phasizes. The famous Cathedral of St. Peter is located at the highest point in the city center and ranks as one of the most magnificent church-es dating from the Romanesque period. The sagas of the Nibelungen are also part of the city’s history and the legendary tales are retold each year in staged performances.
