Heritage Festival Omar Amer Konnichiwa! My name is Omar Amer, I am the Volunteer Coordinator for the 2019 Heritage Festival. Yes, the time has come! Last year was a great success at the Japan pavilion, so I hope you will join us again. Edmonton is pretty well-known for its vibrant Summer Festival season, from Folk Fest to The Fringe. The festivals are really well-known for bringing everyone together to showcase the many groups and talents that our growing city has to offer. Heritage Festival is unique in the sense that it's the biggest multicultural gathering of its kind in the world! Where else can you get an entire city together to share and celebrate everyone's different culture? The festival truly is a one-of-a-kind around the world in 80 minutes experience. 50 steps in one direction and you'll experience Russian folk singing, 50 steps in another direction and you'll see Ukrainian dancing, and in another 50 steps you'll have an elephant ear in your mouth. There are activities, history, and food for families big and small, so if you've never been, I would definitely grab one of the buses down and come experience a one-of-a-kind Edmonton treasure. ヘリテージ祭り オマール・アメール

こんにちは! ２０１９年ヘリテージ祭り日本館ボ

ランティア係のオマールです。さあ、今年もヘリ

テージ祭りが来ました！

エドモントンは夏のフェスティバルの都と呼ばれ

ているように、フォーク・フェストからフリンジ祭り

まで目白押しです。中でもヘリテージ祭りは 1 ヶ

所で世界中の文化を経験できる世界で最大のお祭りです。エドモントンに

住むいろいろな文化を持った人たちが一堂に集まってお国自慢をします。

とにかく世界 1周を 80分でできるのです！50歩右に行けばロシアの民

族ダンス、左に 50歩行けば日本の太鼓演奏、次の 50歩でお菓子「像

の耳」を味わえます。エドモントンには多くの国や地域出身の人がいるの

です。踊り・音楽・武芸の披露、手芸品・食べ物の即売など自慢の文化を

披露します。今年は７３パビリオンが参加します！

２０１９年８月３日(土)、４日(日)、５日(月)、午前９時から午後８時３０分、

ホーレラック公園で行われます。エドモントン日本文化協会でも文化紹介

のテントでは日本の民芸品・小物・盆栽の展示即売、日本の楽器の演

奏、書道で栞に名前書きなどを行い、食べ物のテントでは、お好み焼き、

から揚げその他いろいろ販売します。どうぞご参加ください。

トン日本文化会館で開催します。総会のあとには晩餐会と特別プログラ

ムがあります。総会はEJCA会員だけの参加ですが、特別プログラムと

晩餐会には会員と会員のゲストが参加できます。晩餐会は会員は無料

ですが、ゲストは参加費を払います。晩餐会出席者は予め登録が必要

EJCA held its 4th Natsumatsuri Summer Festival on July 13, 2019. It was a beautiful day after a long rainy period in Edmonton and we had over 1,000 guests. 2019 is the 25th anniversary of the joint operation of the EJCA-ACL Centre. We unveiled a plaque commemorating the anniversary and surprised the guests by with a proffesional fireworks display for the first time at the EJCA Natsumatsuri. The fireworks lasted longer than anyone expected and were wonderful! EJCA is a non-profit organization registered in the Province of Alberta. Revenue comes from membership fees and fund-raising activities. The largest source of EJC’s revenue comes from a casino that we hold once every two years. Other revenues come from Centre rental fees from EJCA clubs, the Heritage Festival and the bazaar. Occasionally, EJCA receives grants from external organizations. We can maintain the Centre and carry out a variety of programs such as Japanese Language programs, introduction of Japanese culture to school children, workshops, club activities and a library with the limited sources of revenue because (1) we jointly operate the Centre with the Argyll Community League (ACL), and (2) we have a large number of many active volunteers on the EJCA board of directors and among EJCA members. 2019年 7月 13日に第 4回夏祭りを行いました。この日は 6月以来続

いていた悪天候の後の晴天に恵まれて、今まで一番多い 1000人以上

の参加者が夏祭りを楽しみました。特に今年はエドモントン日本文化協

会（EJCA）の建物ができてから 25年になります。この建物を共同運営

しているアーガイル・コミュニティ（ACL）と EJCAの運営連合会では、こ

の 25周年を記念して、夏祭りに記念碑の除幕をすることと花火を打ち

上げることを決めました。花火は皆がびっくりするほど立派でした。

私たちの会はアルバータ州に登録されている非営利団体です。私たち

の資金は会費とボランティア活動による収入だけです。一番大きな収入

は 2年毎に行うカジノです。他の収入は EJCAクラブが使うセンター借

料、ヘリテージ祭り、バザーなどです。それからわずかですが、特別な

プログラムのために外部から基金をいただくことがあります。少ない年

間予算にも関わらず、小さな団体が立派な会館を持ち、エドモントンや

アルバータに向けて日本文化の振興のための活動をし、又会員のため

にたくさんの行事をしたり、日本語教育、ワークショップをしたり、各、ク

ラブが活動をしたり、図書室を運営したりと、本当にたくさんのプログラ

ムを多くの方に提供しています。このことを可能にしているのが、一つは

この会館の共同運営、もう一つが役員をはじめ多くの会員によるボラン

ティアの働きです。

このようなことは初めて知る方もあると思いますので、この 2点につい

てお伝えします。まず会館の共同運営について。会館は 1994年に出

来上がりました。それまでの EJCAは日系人の親睦を目的にして活動

していました。集まるときはレストランで敬老会をしたり、他のコミュニテ

ィ・ホールを借りてクリスマスパーティをしたり、公園でピクニックをしたり

していました。当時 EJCAが会館を持つために集めた資金は、1988年

の戦時補償の中の日系コミュニティ再建のための基金から受けた 25万

From prev page its Japanese-Canadian members. It held its senior citizens’ day at a restaurant, Christmas party at a community hall and a picnic at a city park. When EJCA decided to have its own centre, it received $250,000 from the Redress Foundation to rebuilts a local Japanese-Canadian community, $60,000 was raised through EJCA activities such as bazaars. Even 25 years ago, this much funding was not enough to build a new center or to buy an old building such as a church. We looked for all kinds of possibilities and came upon the partnership with the Argyll Community League (ACL). ACL was an aging community at that time. It had an old hall but its members were getting older and could not actively support their activities at the hall. It could not renovate the old hall. EJCA approached ACL and the City of Edmonton and after long discussions came up an arrangement to renovate the old hall and add a storage room, three meeting rooms, an office and a library. EJCA raised money mainly by donations from its members and some grants to increase the fund to about $500,000. The center was completed in 1994. The centre was built on city property and EJCA had an agreement with the City of Edmonton to use the property free of charge for 50 years. The centre is formally owned by the ACL. EJCA and ACL had a renewable five-year contract for the joint operation of the centre. ACL took care of the cost of maintaining the centre building and EJCA paid for the cost of operating the centre. ACL and EJCA held a joint centre operating committee meeting three times a year to work out details of the management of the centre. ACL appreciates that the centre was renovated and expanded by the EJCA funding. (2) EJCA has many active volunteers EJCA has only two staff members on salary: the centre manager and the event coordinator. EJCA pays salaries to instructors for Japan Today, Japanese language classes, workshops, etc. But these programs are financially self-sustaining: salaries and expenses are paid out of program participation fees. All other volunteers work without any renumeration and include the board of directors, various committee members, library working group, workers at the Natsumatsuri and Heritage Festival just to mention a few. These volunteers make it possible for EJCA to carry out a wide range of events and programs with our limited revenue. EJCA can offer programs at very reasonable participation fees. For example, the fee for a Japanese lesson is $135 per 10 times of 2 hour lesson and the fee for Nihongo Kids is $35 per 10 times of one hour lesson. No commercial language school or public extention program can match the EJCA fee because they are profit-oriented and pay rent and salaries at the market rates. Our volunteers support a wide variety of activities aimed at introducing Japanese culture to Canada and improving the quality of life for all Canadians. We are proud of those activities and proud of being a member of EJCA. In June, EJCA held its annual cleaning day and 30 volunteers from the EJCA clubs cleaned every corner of the centre. When we recruited volunteers, someone asked a question, “Why don’t we hire a commercial cleaning company?” What is your answer?

ても買えませんでした。いろいろ調査をしているうちに ACLが老朽化し

たホールを持っているが改装基金がなく、またコミュニティ・リーグ自体

も高齢者が多くなって活動が難しくなり困っていることがわかりました。

EJCAは，ホールの建っている公園の所有者であるエドモントン市と

ACLと会合を重ね、このホールを EJCAの資金で改装し、共同運営が

できるように、法律的にも可能な形を見出すことができました。今のホー

ルの部分は前からあった ACLのホールを改装した箇所、そこへ物置、

台所、3つのミーティングルーム、事務室と図書室が新築されました。建

設費は約 50万ドルでした。改装された建物はエドモントン市が所有し

ている公園に建ち、建物の所有者は ACLです。EJCAは 1994年にこ

の会館を 50年間無料で使える契約をエドモントン市と ACLと交わしま

した。また ACLとは 5年ごとにセンターの共同運営の契約の更新をし

ています。EJCAが無料で使うといっても、ACLも会館を使いますから、

細部にわたって話し合って運営していくことがとても大事です。今まで

25年間、お互いに助け合い譲り合い理解しあって大変スムーズに会館

の共同運営が行われてきました。1年に 3回、共同運営委員会を開い

て情報交換をしたり必要な事項の決定をしています。お互いに活動を

理解しあい、助け合う精神が素晴らしいです。建設費の大部分を EJCA

が負担したことで、これだけの会館が使えることが EJCAの運営を可能

にしているにしている一つの大きな理由です。ACLも EJCA のおかげ

で、このような立派な会館ができ、維持できることを大切に思っていま

す。建物は ACLのものですから ACLが修理の責任を持っています。

EJCAはマネージャーを置いて管理の責任を負いセンターの管理費を

負担しています。

もう一つ大事な柱はボランティア活動です。EJCAが運営のために雇って

いるのはマネージャーとイベントコーディネーターの二つの仕事だけで

す。他に日本語教室や Japan Todayプログラムの講師、ワークショップ

の指導者などに謝礼をしていますが、予算は授業料内で払えるようにな

っています。そのほかすべての仕事、例えば EJCAの運営に携わってい

る役員の仕事、各行事の企画委員の仕事、図書などのコミティーの仕

事、バザーや夏祭り、ヘリテージ祭りなどなどの仕事はどれも会員のボラ

ンティア活動で成り立っています。EJCAの日本語教室は授業料が安くて

参加しやすいといわれます。キッズのクラスは 1回の参加費が４ドルにもなりません。エドモントン日本文化協会が素晴らしい活動を継続出来るの

は基本的にみんなで働いているからです。私立の語学校のように、社長

や校長のサラリーもいらないし、建物の運営費もみんなの働きで賄ってい

るし、利益を出す必要はないのです。どれも非営利団体の会員が無償で

いろいろな仕事をしているからです。そのことによって長い目で見るとカナ

ダやエドモントン社会へ大きな貢献をしているといえます。そして EJCA

の目的は日本文化を広くカナダへ振興すること、皆が住みやすい社会を

作っていくことです。EJCAの会員であることを誇りに思って、この会館を

大事に使い、ボランティアの仕事を楽しんでください。それはとても価値の

あることなのです。

Instructors and Assistants required Two of EJCA’s programs are looking for Instructors and assistants. If you are thinking about becoming an instructor, an assistant’s position is a great opportunity to gain the skills. Salary will be paid according to EJCA standards. 1. The Nihongo Kids and Baby Salon

Requirements: Fluent in Japanese, Availability on weekdays Experience and training in early childhood education are assets.

If you can just teach 30 minutes a day on every second week, we will still welcome you. We will also welcome any volunteer who can help occasionally. Contact Tomomi Calder at event@ejca.org.

2. Teens and Adults Japanese Language class Requirements: Experience and training in Japanese

Library Corner - Exciting additions! Cathy Tennant Earlier this year, the EJCA board submitted an application to the Japan Foundation for Japanese language Children’s books for the EJCA (Gordon Hirabayashi) Library. The application was accepted and resulted in the addition of 50 Japanese language children’s books which were selected by the Nihongo Kids class teacher. Previously, the majority of books in the children’s section of the library were written in English with a few that were bilingual. Many were traditional folk tales. With the recent addition of “Baby Salon” and “Nihongo Kids” programs at EJCA, parents were interested in more current children’s books written in Japanese. Many of the parents were unaware of the library or had never visited because the library was not open at the same time as the programs. Scott, the Centre Manager, arranged to have the library open during the hours of both programs. With this change and the arrival of the new books, we have seen a significant increase in the number of books being borrowed from the children’s section. At the front of the new additions, you will find a “Japan Foundation” sticker to signify which books were generously donated by the foundation. Their contribution in expanding our collection to include many current children’s books, is very much appreciated Stay tuned for more changes in the near future that will bring new books/DVD’s for you to enjoy and make it easier to find what you are looking for on the shelves. EJCA has some funding available to purchase library mateirals – books and DVDs. Please hop in to the library and fill-out a material suggestion form.

図書室便り - 日本語の子供の絵本 50冊が入棚 キャッシー・テナント

今年はじめ EJCAが国際交流基金に申請していた補助金の申請が認可

され、国際交流基金から子供用の日本語の絵本 50冊が EJCAのゴー

ドン・ヒラバヤシ図書館に入棚しました。本は日本語キッズの先生が選び

ました。いままで図書館の子供用の絵本は英語の昔話が多いでした。

EJCAでベービーサロンと日本語キッズプログラムを始めたので、保護

者からもっと最近の日本語の絵本が欲しいという要請がありました。また

ベービーサロンと日本語キッズのプログラムが行われている時に図書館

が閉まっていたので、は保護者の多くは EJCA図書館のことを知りませ

んでした。

現在はセンターマネジャーのスコットがベービーサロンと日本語キッズの

プログラムが行われている時に図書館を開けています。そして絵本の貸

し出しが大幅に増加しました。これら５０冊の絵本には Japan

Foundation（国際交流基金の英語名です）というシールが貼ってありま

す。このシールを見たら、国際交流基金へのお礼の気持ちを持っていた

だくとうれしく思います。

図書ではこれからも会員に必要な本や DVD を入れます。読みたい本や

DVDなどがあったら図書室にある「希望図書申し込み書」にご記入くださ

い。図書を利用して日本文化を楽しんでください。

日本語サロンは、２０１８年２月の第 1回の集まりに始まり、今まで 9回の催しを行ってきました。また親子参加型の日本

語キッズやベビーサロン教室を始めました。EJCAの中でもよい評価をいただき、講習会などに参加する方にも大好評です。

本人会員が世代を超えた交流を図ること、エドモントン生活情報交換を

したり新しいお友達を作る場を提供すること、それから EJCAのコミュニ

ティの活性化です。敷地に面した広場を開放します。購入したお弁当や

お菓子をお友達やご家族でお召し上がりいただいたり、お友達を作った

りと、楽しい夏のひと時をご一緒いたしましょう。お知り合いもお誘いに

なってお出かけください。

出品物はおそうざい、和菓子、洋菓子、お弁当、パン、家庭菜園の農作

育児品のみ、家庭用品は不可）などに加え手作りのもの（手芸、アー

ト、陶器などなど）に限定します。

出店料 8フィートテーブル 1台 20 ドル、半テーブル 10 ドル、

テーブルをシェアしていただいても構いません。

予想来客者 大半がエドモントン地区に住む日本語話者(日本人

や日系人)になると思われます。ポスターやお知らせ

夏祭りの Selfie写真館はとても楽しく、沢山のお客様が浴衣で

家族写真を撮っていました。

ところが、EJCAの持っている子供サイズの浴衣がとても少なく

て、サイズの合う浴衣を着ていただけないケースがたくさんあり

ました。

お子様が大きくなられて着なくなった浴衣と兵児帯をお

持ちでしょうか？もし寄付または売っていただけるようで

"所得税と確定申告セミナー“ 報告

カナダに住んでいても、カナダの仕組みを詳しく知るチャンスってなかなかありませんね。5

月 26日(日)にカナダで会計士をしているグッドストライカー ゆかさんが所得税や確定申

告について日本語で講演してくださいました。ゆかさんは、カナダで会計士の勉強をし、特

に税金対策の話、日本とカナダに収入や資産があるときは税金がどうなるか等具体的に、

日ごろ私たちが疑問になっていることを丁寧に話してくださいました。

お金についてはとても興味があり、心配なことなのに、なかなか話題にしにくいものです

が、このような機会にみんなで話し合えたのはとても良かったとの評価でした。

EJCA Family Movie Day -Report! Carley Okamura On May 18th, EJCA had its first Family Movie Day in our own new style. About 40 people attended this event. We showed the world-wide popular film “Kimi no Na wa (Your Name)”, and had a visit of the film characters from Animethon. At the concessions, there were snacks like popcorn (All Canadians need this for movies), mochi and manju (Japanese traditional rice cakes), and three types of mocktails including milkshakes. Thanks to the BBQ team, we also enjoyed special ‘okono-dogs (Okonomi-yaki style hotdogs).’ Thank you to all volunteers and guests, and our friends at Animethon. We hope to have another movie day in the future!

EJCA ファミリー映画鑑賞会報告 カーリー・オカムラ

5月 18日、EJCAは新しいスタイルでのファミリー映画鑑賞会を開きまし

た。大人から子供まで 40名ほどが参加しました。世界的にとてもの人気

のある映画「君の名は」を上映し、アニメソン所属のコスプレーヤーとの

記念写真の時間もありました。売店では日本の伝統的なお饅頭や大福、

カナダの映画鑑賞に不可欠なポッポコーン、ミルクシェイクをはじめとす

る 3種類のノンアルコールカクテルや飲み物の販売がありました。大き

な賞賛を送りたいのが、BBQチームの「おこのドッグ」という日本風のホ

ットドッグです。最高に良かったです。

ご協力下さった全てのボランティア、アニメソンの皆様、参加者の皆様に

心よりお礼を申し上げます。近い将来、またこのイベントを開けたらいい

なと思っています。

Congratulations, Yoko Oike -Wong Jim Hoyano On Monday June 10, 2019 at the City of Edmonton’s Salute to Excellence Ceremony held at the Francis Winspear Centre for Music, Yoko Wong was inducted into the Arts & Cultural Hall of Fame which honours outstanding individuals whose work has inspired Edmontonians. Yoko received her award from Mayor Don Iveson. Yoko Wong has lived in Edmonton for more than 50 years. She has been an EJCA member for many years, was a member of the EJCA Art Club, and played the violin at some EJCA events. Congratulations Yoko, the award is well deserved! Following is a brief background of Yoko’s life and career in Edmonton, taken from the ‘Japanese Canadian Artists’ website. Yoko Oike-Wong came to Edmonton from Matsumoto, Japan in 1965 by invitation from the Society for Talent Education for the express purpose of introducing the Suzuki Method, a way of violin training for young children initiated by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki who was Oike-Wong’s teacher and mentor from the age of 7 to 24. Oike-Wong remained in Edmonton since then. Oike-Wong says, ‘From over 40 years of working with violin students I am happy to see so many of them now working world wide as solo violinists, orchestra leaders, teachers, community musicians, music therapists, or simply as music lovers with a good knowledge of and passion for classical music. In 2008, Oike-Wong retired from teaching and now enjoys playing with fellow chamber music lovers. As a volunteer violinist, Oike-Wong has been playing at the weekly Musical Hour at the University of Alberta Hospital, the Mazankowski Heart Institute, the monthly Musical Hour at the Cross Cancer Research Institute, and at the Pilgrims Hospice.

黄(大池)庸子さんが２０１９年６月１０日にウィンス

ペア・センターで行われたエドモントン市主催の「優

れた人へ敬意を表する式典」でエドモントン市民を

元気づけた人として「芸術と文化の殿堂」に入る名

誉をドン・アイヴソン市長から授与されました。

黄(大池)庸子さんは５０年余りエドモントンに在住し、長年にわたり

EJCAの会員です。EJCAアート・クラブの会員でした。EJCAの行事で

はバイオリンの演奏をしました。黄(大池)庸子さん、「芸術と文化の殿

堂」入りおめでとうございます。

下記の「芸術と文化の殿堂」の略歴は「日系カナダ人芸術家名簿」から

の抄録です。

「黄(大池)庸子さんは１９６５年に「優れた天分を持つ人のための教育協

会」に招聘され、子供のためのバイオリン教授法、スズキ・メソードでバイ

オリン教育をするためにエドモントンに来ました。黄(大池)庸子さん自身

がスズキ・メソードの創始者、鈴木鎮一博士について７歳から２４歳まで

バイオリンを習得しました。１９６５年以来ずっとエドモントンに住んでいま

す。

黄(大池)庸子さんは次のように言っています。「４０年余りバイオリンを

教えてきて一番幸せなのは私の教え子がソロ・バイオリニスト、オーケス

トラのリーダー、音楽教師、コミュニティーの音楽家、音楽セラピスト、そ

して古典音楽の造形の深い音楽を愛する人、などいろいらな分野で活躍

しているのを知ることです。」

黄(大池)庸子さんは２００８年にバイオリンを教える仕事からは引退しま

したが、友達と室内楽の演奏を楽しみ、ボランティアとしてアルバータ大

学病院をはじめとして、いろいろな病院を訪問してバイオリンの演奏をし

ています。

Cleaning day report Scott Tanaka Thanks to all the volunteers who helped during a cleaning day held on June 8, 2019. It was a great success! The kichen stoves and microwave were shiny again, light fixtures were wiped and now rooms are brighter, all the walls and windows were washed (it was a surprise to know how much dust the walls collected in a year), blinds were dusted, the trees in the front garden were trimmed, tables and chairs were washed, and more! Originally 20 people signed up but over 30 attended. All EJCA clubs provided these volunteers as the clubs use the centre most. I received a few good suggestions to improve the cleaning process, that will be added to the list next year to make better use of everyone’s time. At the end, all enjoyed a casual lunch and talked about EJCA’s great volunteerism. Next year, it is your turn to join the cleaning day and have fun!

ましたが、当日は 30人が参加しま

した。用意していたサンドイッチ

が足りなくなりそうなので急いで

追加の材料を買いに行きました。

ボランティアは会館をいつも使っ

ているすべてのクラブからの有志

でした。一人ですると大変な掃除も皆と一緒にするとこんなに楽し

くなるのだとあらためて思いました。来年は皆さんも大掃除に参加

して楽しんでください。

Japan Travel 2020 Dr. Olenka Bilash Honorary Consul General of Japan in Edmonton

Is Japan on your travel plans for 2020? Metropolitan Tokyo has invested heavily in making the largest city in the world a foreigner-friendly destination before, during and after the Olympic and Paralympic Games next summer. No matter what event you hope to attend, you will need to eat and balance the excitement of the athletic performances with culinary, aesthetic and memory- stimulating experiences. How do I – a gaijin – know? As Honorary Consul General of Japan in Edmonton I had the privilege of spending over a week in Tokyo in March, and have made annual work trips to Hokkaido and parts of the Tokyo region for almost twenty years. My 2019 visit was hosted by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In addition to attending formal briefings I experienced the spirit of the cherry blossom season, investigated Japan’s National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan), learned about how Japan manages natural disasters at the disaster relief centre, and expanded my cultural knowledge through tours of other museums, parks and shrines in Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima. Everywhere I travelled I enjoyed the first rate food and hospitality for which the Japanese are famous. Allow me to share a few highlights. Briefings Briefings focused on Canada-Japan relations, including information about The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). CPTPP is a free trade agreement between Canada, Japan and nine other countries in the Asia-Pacific region: Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. The implementation plan will create a trading bloc between the eleven countries and connect 495 million consumers. With Japan being among Canada’s top four trading partners and Alberta’s third strongest, this landmark trade deal promises to expand Canada’s canola, coal, copper ores, pork, lumber and wheat exports to Japan. CPTPP is a revamped version of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which the United States pulled out of in 2017. (See: https://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/japan-japon/bilateral_relations_bilaterales/index.aspx?lang=eng) Canada is Japan’s 18th largest trading partner and the Alberta Japan Office (AJO) in Tokyo, lead by Mr. David Anderson, continues to keep our ties strong. The AJO works closely with the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC) to bridge business interests in both countries. Thanks to the EEDC, and the new state of the art food processing centre in Leduc, business trade in health care, skin products, artificial intelligence (AI), honey and other agricultural products is on the increase. In my presentation to the Japan-Canada Chamber of Commerce in Tokyo at the end of my stay I emphasized that the CPTPP offers a prime opportunity for Japanese businesses to invest in Canada. I am grateful to AJO, EEDC and Global Edmonton for their work in making Edmonton an appealing site for economic growth, and especially for their contributions to bringing UNIQLO to Edmonton this fall!

レンカ・ビーラッシュさん(EJCA会員)は今年の 3月に日本の外務省に招

待されて日本に行きました。その体験を「もしもし」に投稿しました。これ

は英語の投稿の日本語による抄訳です。

私は外務省に招待されて日本に行き、エドモントン名誉総領事の仕事の

ために必要なブリーフィングと日本の現状を知るためにいろいろな施設

を訪問しました。日本旅行をする皆様の参考になるかと思い、私の経験

をお伝えします。

外務省のブリーフィングは環太平洋パートナーシップに関する包括的及

び先進的な協定と太平洋とインド洋諸国と日本の通商関係が主でした。

私はこれに関連して政治家や官僚と話す機会があり、またカナダー日本

商工会議所で講演する機会がありました。私は講演でこのあたらしいパ

ートナーシップ協定が日本のカナダとアルバータへの投資に新しい機会

をつくるということを強調しました。

また高円宮妃殿下とお会いして親しくお話をすることが出来ました。皆様

ご存知のように妃殿下はアルバータ大学高円宮日本センターの強力な

支持者でいらっしゃいます。

外務省のブリーフィングの他にとても面白い博物館の見学に行きまし

た。日本科学未来館はこれからの社会が科学技術でどのように変化す

る可能性があるかを体験出来る施設です。私はロボットがいろいろな分

野で活躍する様子を見ました。また宇宙ステーションの模型の中に入り、

宇宙飛行士が毎日どのような生活をするか体験しました。

未来館の隣の東京都消防庁の防災館「別名池袋地震館」は天然災害の

多い日本で、それぞれどの様にして自然災害から身の安全を守るかを

体験して学習出来る施設です。例えば大地震直後の町が作ってあり、こ

こを歩きながら生きていく知恵を学びます。コンビニのプラスティック袋で

折れた腕を支えたり、ペットボトルを集めて机や椅子をつくります。皆様

が日本に旅行をする時はこれら興味深い施設にもいらしてください。

A second briefing focussed on Japan’s strategy to build economic partners throughout the Pacific-Indian Ocean areas as well as with other trading nations. Ten of Japan’s top trading partners are in the Asia Pacific region. Additional briefings allowed me to meet politicians and members of government with a variety of portfolios - all interested in Canada-Japan relations. Japan is among the world's largest and most technologically advanced producers of motor vehicles, electronic equipment, machine tools, steel and nonferrous metals, ships, chemicals, textiles, and processed foods. She is a superb conversationalist and openly shared her friendships around the world and support for special international projects such as the birds of the world and the role they play in keeping our ecosystems balanced. She is also a strong supporter of the University of Alberta’s Prince Takamado Japan Centre (PTJC) which is skillfully lead by Dr.Aya Fujiwara. (See: https://www.ualberta.ca/ptjc) The Princess expressed interest in coming to Canada this year so watch for announcements of a possible upcoming visit. What future will we build with robots? The words on the entrance wall of Tokyo’s Miraikan Science Museum invite visitors to imagine the future:

You will encounter many questions here. First choose a question that interests you and think about it. Then find your own questions, try to answer them, and turn your answers into action. When summed up, our individual actions will become a power that will surely change the future.”

With this in mind, I joined many families exploring fun interactive tasks (in Japanese and other languages) in different areas of the five-floor complex and awakened my inner e child. Designed on the premise that robots are growing in numbers, becoming smarter and even more prevalent in life, especially in Japan, the first floors of the museum invite visitors to reflect on questions such as: What will it take for humans to live in comfortable harmony with robots? What future will we build with robots? Visitors of all ages can think about living in a future built by robot technology. I enjoyed the performance of Honda’s adorable Asimo (which is available on video at Calgary’s Telus Spark), and watched teens and adults scurry around the Museum on a Honda unicycle-type robot. https://www.miraikan.jst.go.jp/m/en/exhibition/future/robot/robotworld.html After the talking, dancing, singing and ball-throwing robot show I entered a space habitation module and viewed the objects needed for everyday life off of our planet. What would life be like without a house of furniture, shelves of books, a closet of outfits or a pantry of food supplies? The exhibit provoked much contemplation. From the exit of this module I could go in any direction to explore more queries about the future. I was allured by a row of adults engaged with tablets and table size flat computers of the “TSUNAGARI” project (meaning links/relations/connections). https://www.miraikan.jst.go.jp/m/en/exhibition/tsunagari/tsunagari.html They were playing with AuthaGraph, Geo-Palette and Geo-Scope. I only had time to investigate architect Hajime Narukawa’s 1999 AuthaGraph, a new and more equitable standard for a world map. It frames all continents and islands in the rectangular shape of maps with which we are familiar but maintains their area ratios correctly, thus helping the general public see the actual shape of countries at higher latitudes such as northern Canada and Greenland. As a new standard of the world map, it replaces the late 16th

century Mercator projection that exaggerates areas at higher latitudes. Further, it is possible to centre the map anywhere, thus providing a more decentralized worldview. I recommend Miraikan as a stop on any visit to Tokyo. It offers so much to see and do. Save your life in a disaster! Located in walking distance from Miraikan stands ‘The Life Safety Learning Centre’, unofficially known as ‘The Ikebukuro Earthquake Museum’. With natural disasters such as mini earthquakes, tornadoes, and forest fires becoming increasingly more familiar to Albertans, and having observed the peaceful and civil behaviour after several tsunamis and Hokkaido’s 2018 earthquake, I was eager to learn how the Japanese are trained to survive such conditions in such a civil manner. This museum has created a simulation of an earthquake that guides you – and all school-aged children in Japan – through an elevator ride and down a street that has been hit by an earthquake and into a survival area. Interactive questions on a tablet allowed me to review my knowledge and suggest ways to use what is available to stay calm and attend to challenges as they arise. Did you know that a Convenience store plastic bag can serve as a sling for an injured arm? That empty water bottles of the same size can easily be assembled to make a chair or table? That a garbage bag can be converted into a potty? See Photos Two and Three.

Photo Two: In the Ikebukuro Earthquake Museum I learned about how to transform empty water bottles into tables and chairs. Since all Japanese residents are advised to keep a three day supply of water and food on hand at all times, they are well prepared for any disaster.

Photo Three: At the end of the educational exhibit we could play a variety of games and activities to review the key points about our responsibilities in surviving a disaster.

Of course there is much to see and do in the Tokyo area. For the more young and energetic, try climbing Fuji-san, or walk through the famous technology area of Akihabara, or shop ‘til you drop in Ginza, Shinjuku or youthful Shibuya! And if you tour the Tokyo Metropolitan Office Building, be sure to visit the Kurumiru gift shop in the basement for authentic Japanese gifts made by disabled adults.

I am playing on the Edmonton Prospects Baseball Team Katsumi Takahashi Hello everyone. I joined the Edmonton Prospects last May and am now playing in the Canadian Summer Baseball League. I was born and raised in a small village in Shimane Prefecture. I started playing baseball when I was in Grade 1. Since then, playing baseball in the United States and abroad has been my dream. While I was studying at Kibi International University, I played baseball twice in the United States. The second time I played, I played well in Asian Breezes, an cosmopolitan travelling baseball team mainly composed of Japanese players but also including players from other counties such as Hong Kong and Finland. Last February and March, the team played well against MLB teams and an Mexican professional baseball team.

I have been to Taiwan, the US and Mexico, but this is the first time I have visited Canada. But one of my uncles has been living here more than 30 years. He is a professional photographer and is also working in the travel industry. The other day, he visited Edmonton to see the game we played.

Edmonton is much more active than I have expected. I am glad to see many Japanese restaurants. But sometime I feel lonely because I have not met local Japanese people yet. Our home field is REMAX Field. We have a good sized crowd when we play on Saturdays and Sundays. My teammates love to learn Japanese and are speaking Japanese in and out of our games. They are all interested in leaning about Japan. Perhaps, I spend more time on teaching them Japanese than learning English from them. Our regular season will end on August 5 (we are playing play-off games after that). Not much time is left before the season closes. Please come and cheer our team. 私は野球チーム エドモントン・プロスペクツの選手！高橋克之

みなさん初めまして！高橋克之というものです。私は今年の５月２３日か

らエドモントン・プロスペクツという野球チームに入団して現在カナダで行

われているサマーリーグでプレイしています。

私は島根県飯石郡飯南町という小さな町で生まれ育ちました。幼い頃か

らメジャーリーグを夢見て憧れていました。そして、いつかアメリカ・海外

で野球したいと考えていました。小学一年生から野球を始め、地元の飯

南高校を卒業し、岡山県にある吉備国際大学を卒業しました。大学在学

中には、ニ度アメリカでプレイをしました。ニ度目の時に参加したアジアン

ブリーズというチームで成績を挙げ、今回エドモントン・プロスペクツに入

団出来ました。アジアンブリーズとは、日本人を中心とした多国籍トラベ

リングチームです。チームには、元プロ野球選手や高校生や香港、フィン

ランド出身の選手など様々な選手がいました。今年の 2月と 3月にアメ

リカで、MLB傘下のチームやメキシコのプロチームなどレベルの高いチ

ームと試合をしました。

私は今までに台湾・アメリカ・メキシコに行ったことがありました。カナダは

初めてですが、親戚のおじさんが 30年以上住んでいます。おじさんはカ

ナダで結婚しオーロラなどの観光業やカメラマンとして活躍しています。

今回、自分の試合を見にエドモントンまで来てくれました。

エドモントンという町は、来てみると思っていたより活気があり安心しまし

た。日本食のお店もたくさん見かけます。でも、日本人に会わなくて寂し

いです。エドモントン・プロスペクツは REMAX球場を本拠地とするチーム

です。土日の試合はかなりの観客がいて大変盛り上がっています。チー

ムでは日本語が流行っており試合中や普段の生活の中でも日本語が当

たり前のように飛び交っています。球場に来ていただけると、チームメイ

トの日本語が聞けると思います。みんな日本に興味を持っていて、自分

が英語を学ぶよりも、みんなに日本のことや日本語を教えているほうが

多いかもしれません。何でもかんでも「日本語でなんて言うんだ？」と聞

いてきます。

ぜひ球場へ足を運んでチームを応援してください！プレイオフもあります

が、レギュラーシーズンは 8月 5日までであまり日にちはありませんが

ぜひ！！日曜日は試合終了後にグランドにてサイン会もあります！もち

ろん平日にもあるので都合の合う日にでも、僕に会いに来てくださ

Japanese Needlework Workshop Adeline Panamaroff

On May 25th, several EJCA members gathered in Lounge 3 for a very informative and enjoyable time with Erika Bottcher. Erika gave us a belief history of quilting in Japan, indigo dyed fabrics and some ways that older kimonos and traditional garments can be recycled into new items like needle books, coasters, charming bags, and other useful items.

With Erika’s careful guidance, the students were able to assemble either coasters, or needle books from three types of fabrics. A piece of indigo cotton, print cotton, and thick woven silk. The students had a good time chatting amongst themselves while stitching along with Erika’s instructions. Some workshop attendees were so diligent that they were able to complete two coasters before they left. Others, like myself, will have to finish the needle book at home. Erika had a wealth of knowledge and print resources to share with all of us. She was very generous with her time and skills. I hope that this can be the start for many such crafting workshops that EJCA can host in the future.

本の針仕事のワークショップが EJCAセ

ンターで開かれました。ボッチャーさんは

先ず日本に於けるキルティングと藍染の

歴史を話し、次に古い着物の布を使って

針を収容する袋、コースター、袋物、そ

の他便利な品物に再利用する方法を話

しました。

ボッチャーさんの丁寧な指導のおかげで

参加者は針を収容する袋やコースターを

藍染の木綿、木綿のプリント生地、絹織

物から作りました。ボッチャーさんの指導

を受けながら、参加者は和気あいあい

に楽しく作業をしました。頑張って縫い物

を二つ仕上げた人もいました。私のよう

に縫い物が終わらず家に持ち帰って仕

上げた人もいました。ブッチャーさんは

日本の針仕事に深い造詣があり、参加

者に親切に指導をしました。このワーク

ショップが同様な工芸ワークソップの先

駆けになり、これからも EJCAがこのよ

うな工芸のワークショップを開くことを願

っています。

Matsuno-kai Alan Davis Recent outings took us to places we have never gone to as a group and that many Edmontonians have probably never visited. They included a visit to a Moonshine distillery the “Red Cup Distillery” at the Edmonton International Airport, an Exotic Mushroom Farm, the “Gruger Family Fungi” in Nisku, the “Skyline Hydroponic Greenhouse” in Lavoy and a day trip to the University of Alberta Botanical Garden near Devon. Our upcoming venture, again at the Airport, is a visit to the new Century Mile Racetrack and Casino where we plan to try out their buffet lunch. We had a great time participating in the Natsu Matsuri again this year and happily, all our menu items were very popular. After all the recent rain, the weather was perfect for the festival and for our “neck coolers”! VISION STATEMENT

The Edmonton Japanese Community Association is a community of members

whose vision is to create a shared experience of Japanese and Canadian culture.

MISSION STATEMENT:

The Edmonton Japanese Community Association builds a supportive community

to explore Japanese and Canadian cultural sharing by:

• providing a facility for groups interested in Japanese cultural matters;

• creating and delivering services, programs and events;

• creating partnerships between EJCA and other Edmonton area

organizations and Japanese Canadian organizations;

• acting as a representative of Japanese and Canadian people to provincial
