Kyo-Machiya – 京町家
• The Kyo-machiya were built before World War II and very much defined the architectural atmosphere of historical downtown Kyoto until the arrival of modern, concrete structures.
• The machiya was just listed to the World Monuments fund’s watch site -- the Fund is to save the world’s most treasured places.

Virtual Kyoto Project
a) Archiving geo-referenced materials such as current digital maps, old topographic maps, cadastral maps, aerial photos, picture maps, street photos, landscape paintings, archaeological sites data, and historical documents
b) Creating a database of all existing buildings including Kyo-machiya, early modern buildings, and shrines and temples including those of historical and cultural significance
c) Creating 3D VR models of the buildings mentioned above
d) Estimating and simulating land use and landscape changes over the study periods using the aforementioned materials.

Kyo-machiya Community-building Survey(s)
• First systematic surveys of Kyo-machiya were jointly conducted in the late 1990s by a non-profit organization and the Kyoto City Government.
• In 2003-2004, the Kyoto City Government conducted a second survey on 18 school districts of the city center, while Ritsumeikan University surveyed the remaining sections of the study area of the first survey.

The third Survey (2008-2009)
• Previous surveys focused on Kyo-machiyalocated in the city center, the areas that were urbanized around the end of the Meiji period.
• The study area was extended to the entire city of Kyoto including areas along old main roads. The estimate of Kyo-machiya built before 1950 was found to be well over 50,000.

Conclusion• How to create a Kyo-machiya monitoring
system from large-scale field surveys.
• Apply GIS data of this monitoring system to the Virtual Kyoto project to restore and visualize the transition in the city’s urban landscape.
• The Virtual Kyoto project has generated a huge quantity of geo-spatial GIS data including a wide variety of old maps, old aerial photos, etc.
• This system would also be of practical use for supporting urban planning and community-development through Kyo-machiya.
