TRAVEL JOURNALTravelling is wonderful from beginning to end.

Planning a trip is always exciting, from the anticipation of the moment, the count down until take-o�, to the moment of arrival and the butterflies we feel in our stomach when we land in a completely unknown place! Then, we return and we have all the memories (everything we take with us besides what we remember and that help us keeping them forever): the photos, the plane tickets, the card of a restaurant where we had

dinner, the souvenirs and the postcards. Basically, anything that represents an important moment for us. This Check-in not only wants to be your Travel Journal but also your guide for an unforgettable trip.

We hope you enjoy it and return… Even if only for one more time, because it is always worth it to relive the good things in life :)

“This photo was taken in February/March, in one of my visits to Lisbon - which I do 5/6 times a year. I live in Oporto, where the weather is windy, rainy and cold this time of the year. Arriving in Lisbon and seeing all this light (which is always special) and warmth, was enough to take a photo and to show my friends how well you are here!The double bed was perfect, because I'm tall and sleep in the diagonal! And the surprise was the terrace with views to Parque Eduardo VII! I was right in the centre of Lisbon with privileged views! I remember finishing the meetings and running to the hotel... The sun was still shining and I would take the opportunity get a bit of a tan.”

Lisboa tem recantos incríveis... Algo que me surpreendeu foi um pequeno restaurante tibetano que encontrei ao pé da estação de comboio Alcântara-Terra. Lisboa é uma pequena cidade, comparada com São Paulo, Nova Iorque ou Londres, mas tão cosmopolita quanto essas cidades, o que lhe dá um encanto próprio.

Lisbon has incredible nooks and crannies... I was very surprised by a small Tibetan restaurant that I discovered near the Alcântara-Terra train station. Lisbon is small when compared to cities like São Paulo, New York or London, but as cosmopolitan as those cities, which gives it a special charm.

DICAS SOBRE LISBOATIPS ABOUT LISBON

Escolhi Lisboa porque é a capital e é uma cidade famosa. Lisboa é ótima não só para um fim de semana romântico, como para uma viagem com amigos, pois pode fazer-se qualquer coisa aqui. Visitei Belém, o Cristo Rei e andei no funicular. E fiquei viciada nos pastéis de nata!Dica que eu deixo é, antes de chegarem, preparem a viagem para aproveitar o máximo que puderem da cidade e não desperdiçarem tempo se tiverem aqui menos de três dias. Comprem um guia, acordem cedo e levem bons ténis porque há muitas subidas e descidas!

I chose Lisbon because it's the capital and a famous city.Lisbon is great not only for a romantic weekend but also for a trip with friends, because there's a lot to do here. I visited Belém, Christ the King and I travelled in the funicular. I became addicted to the pastéis de nata (custard tarts)! My tip for you is, before arriving, prepare your trip so you can enjoy the most of the city and don't waste time if you are here for less than three days. Buy a guide, wake-up early and put on a good pair of trainers because there will be a lot of ups and downs!

woooow! DICAS SOBRE LISBOATIPS ABOUT LISBON

Qualquer pessoa encontrará algo para fazer, independentemente de vir com amigos ou para quem decida vir numa escapadinha romântica, pois há imensos locais queridos, onde podem desfrutar da companhia um do outro!Vão à Praça Luís de Camões, no Bairro Alto, onde também têm vistas fantásticas sobre a cidade (recomendo que o façam à noite). Procuramos também falar com os locais sempre que podíamos e são todos muito educados e abertos! Toda a gente é tratada com respeito e são sempre simpáticos. Praticamente nunca estivemos no hotel, porque estávamos sempre a aproveitar Lisboa. Sentávamo-nos durante horas nos cafés e banquinhos a olhar para as pessoas e a comer pastéis de nata e outros doces tradicionais. O pequeno-almoço do hotel - que não vi mencionado em lado nenhum - podes fazer o teu próprio smothie! Não é preciso dizer mais nada…

You will always find something to do, regardless if you're coming with friends or for those who decided to have a romantic break. There are a lot of interesting places where you can enjoy each other's company!Go to Praça Luís de Camões, in Bairro Alto, where you have fantastic views over the city (we recommend you go in the evening). We talked to locals whenever we could and they are very polite and open! Everyone here is treated with respect and the citizens are very nice. We were almost never in the hotel, because we wanted to enjoy the most of Lisbon. We sat for hours in cafés and benches, looking at the people and eating pastéis de nata (custard tarts) and other traditional delicacies. Although it is not mentioned, during breakfast in the hotel, you can make your own smothie! - I think I don't need to say more!

We live in di�erent countries and we have the tradition of meeting at least once a year, whether in the place I'm living (I travel a lot and often live in di�erent cities) or some other place we choose together. I convinced her to come to Lisbon because, even though I had visited the city before, I fell in love with it and wanted to share this exciting, beautiful and underestimated city with her!”

We wanted to do something di�erent from what we do every year to celebrate our anniversary, so my boyfriend said out of nowhere: “Let's go to Oporto!”. The idea was spontaneous and unpredictable, so I didn't think twice.The HF Ipanema Park hotel is fantastic! The building is beautiful from the outside and wonderful from the inside, with a grand piano in the lobby and many art pieces in every corner. The sta� was super kind and helpful. And the room? We fell in love! Not to mention the gorgeous views over the river's mouth through those huge windows. Wonderful!

DICAS SOBRE PORTOTIPS ABOUT OPORTO

Sem dúvida que recomendo umaviagem romântica. Quando atravessamos a ponte D. Luís Ipela primeira vez estavam muitaspessoas juntas a comentar, tirarfotografias e a olhar para baixo. Ficamos intrigados com o que seria e espreitamos também, deparamo-nos com um senhor que tirou toda a roupa e estava por baixo da ponte a dar mergulhos e a apanhar sol. Em pleno novembro! Um conselho, se querem comer uma boa francesinha, vão a parte histórica da cidade e perguntem onde se comem boas francesinhas, e aí sim, não se vão arrepender!

No doubt I recommend a romantic trip.When we cross the D. Luís I bridge for the first time, there were many people together, talking, taking photos and looking down. We were intrigued and we also took a peek: there was a man who took o� all his clothes and was diving and sun bathing under the bridge. In the middle of November! If you want to eat a good francesinha (typical sandwich with spicy sauce), go to the historical part of the city, ask where you can get a good one and you are not going to regret it!

“The city can be visited with family and it is great for those who like history, travelling, taking photos and learning new things. The HF Ipanema Porto hotel is beautiful and spacious, with extremely nice sta� and a delicious breakfast. It's not far from the centre, so you can go on foot. The receptionists will also help you with the map and will show you where the main tourist attractions are.”

Fui com a minha família, em maio, visitar este país maravilhoso.

Visitámos várias cidades e o Porto parecia ser uma das mais animadas. Lembro-me da beleza da cidade e dos estudantes participarem na “Queima das Fitas”. Acho que conquistaram o meu coração. Eles descreveram vivamente a vida da cidade e mostraram-nos o caráter do povo português. Nunca conheci pessoas tão abertas e simpáticas!Aprendi imensas coisas, uma delas a ligação da cidade ao Harry Potter, nomeadamente a Livraria Lello, onde tudo pode ter começado ou de a J. K. Rowling se ter inspirado nos estudantes portugueses e criado a sua versão deles. Há imensas coisas deliciosas na cidade, desde as sobremesas ao Vinho do Porto que conquistará o seu coração. Até a pessoa mais crítica irá encontrar algo a seu gosto.

I went with my family in May to visit this wonderful country. We visited many cities and Oporto seemed to be the one of the most lively. I remember the beauty of the city and the students in “Queima das Fitas” (festivity of the university students to celebrate the end of the year). I think you conquered my heart. They really described the city's life and showed us the spirit of the Portuguese people. I never met people so open and friendly! I learnt a lot, including the connection of Harry Potter to the city, namely the Lello bookshop, where everything might have started or where J. K. Rowling may have gotten inspired in the Portuguese students and has created her own version. There are many delicious things in the city, from the desserts to the Port wine which will conquer your heart. Even the most demanding person will find something that he/she likes.

#4 Cores e padrões hipnotizamUse o preto e branco quando entender que a fotografia vai beneficiar com o contraste ou quando quiser focar a atenção nas formas, por exemplo. De resto, viva a cor e os padrões que encontra, em especial, nos pormenores.Em Lisboa e no Porto, por exemplo, com os tradicionais azulejos, a arte urbana e a composição pitoresca dos bairros mais antigos, não será difícil tirar fotografias hipnotizantes.

For example, are you in a restaurant terrace with a fantastic view? Highlight the drink or the plate, with the rest as the backdrop.

Otherwise, focus on the colours and patterns you find, especially in the details.In Lisbon or in Oporto, for example, with the traditional tiles, the urban art and the picturesque structure of the older districts, it won't be di�cult to take mesmerising photos.

As pessoas contam histórias, transmitem emoção e despertam curiosidade. Para além disso, dão profundidade à imagem, por exemplo, quando se trata de uma paisagem mais plana, ou ajudando na perceção das escalas.

#6 Seja misterioso e estimule a curiosidadeOs padrões e pormenores são dois exemplos aos quais pode recorrer para obter esse resultado (ver #4). No entanto, há outros truques, tais como a simetria, as composições abstratas ou as chamadas “molduras” (por exemplo, fotografar uma paisagem a partir de uma janela).

#5 More than taking a photo of a place, tell a storyTake photos of people, whether the locals or those travelling with you, and capture spontaneous, unexpected and unusual moments. People tell stories, show emotions and raise curiosity. More than that, they give depth to the image, for example, when it's a flatter landscape or helping in the perception of scale.

#6 Be mysterious and stimulate curiosityThe patterns and details are two examples you can use to get this result (see #4). However, there are others, such as symmetry, abstract compositions or the so called “frames” (for example, taking a photo of a landscape from a window).

#7 Aproveite as nuvens!Fotografar com sol pode criar resultados muitos interessantes (o efeito silhueta, por exemplo), mas pode tornar-se difícil para outras situações, como é o caso de retratos. Por isso, se vir o céu pontilhado com nuvens, aproveite esses desenhos da natureza ou, por exemplo, o céu completamente nublado, que lhe cria uma luz mais suave e, tal como a luz de janela, torna os retratos mais agradáveis.

#8 Os reflexos Por falar em tempo, fotografe o efeito da chuva, os reflexos da água ou de qualquer superfície refletora que resultam em imagens mais enigmáticas e criam algum dramatismo (ver #6).

#7 Take advantage of the cloudsTaking photos with the sun out can create very interesting results (the silhouette e�ect, for example), but it can be hard in other situations, such as portraits. So, if you see the sky with some clouds, take advantage of those drawings of nature or, for example, a sky completely cast with clouds, which creates a softer light and, like the window light, make for more pleasant portraits.

#8 The reflectionsSpeaking of weather, take photos of the rain e�ect, the water reflections or any other reflective surface, as they result in more enigmatic images and create some drama (see #6).
