Higher Tremarcoombe Pipewell and Toyz Pond Project Prior to commencing restoration work on the Pipewell and Toyz Pond, a bird survey was carried out to determine the population density and species variety of the local habitat. The survey was undertaken during the breeding season, when many bird species, especially passerines, are territorial and more active. Surveying and recording commenced on 2nd April and was done on a weekly basis until 10 visits had been made. The last survey was on 4th June. The British Trust for Ornithology’s Territory Mapping method was used. During the breeding season territories are mainly marked by conspicuous song, display and periodic disputes with neighbours. These territories are shown on the maps by the revelation of clusters.In addition the Territory Mapping procedures can also identify nesting, feeding and fledgling young. Observations of birds and activities are recorded on the maps using codes R Robin C Carrion Crow B Blackbird* SL Swallow CH Chaffinch CT Coal Tit WW Willow Warbler J Jay WR Wren GS Great Spotted Woodpecker WP Woodpigeon RN Raven ST Song Thrush BZ Buzzard CD Collared Dove CC Chiffchaff D Dunnock* GO Goldfinch* PW Pied Wagtail* JD Jackdaw* RO Rook* BT Blue Tit* GT Great Tit* MG Magpie* SD Stock Dove HS House Sparrow* LT Long Tailed Tit* GR Greenfinch* A total of 29 bird species per recorded, which was a pleasant surprise seeing that the survey area was not very large. Seven of the species did not provide enough of these visit sightings to determine whether territories were being held. These birds are listed in the right‐hand column above. The 22 species listed in the left‐hand column identifies the number of species holding territory. Twelve species (marked*) definitely bred, indicated by carrying food or feeding fledged young. With reference to the remaining 10 species it was highly probable that they bred successfully, although no indications of carrying or fledged young were recorded. The fact that 22 species were holding territory shows that there is a highly commendable diversity of bird species, which indicates that it is vital for this compact area to be conserved. I intend to make surveys in the spring of 2012 and 2013. This will determine whether the restoration has made an impact on the bird life. I am confident that the changes will be beneficial by increasing an already good bird species diversity. Bob Stockhausen 25th July 2011.
