5) Mexico- in the Mexican War (1846-1848) the Americans conquered over a half of the Mexico´s territory (the present states of California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico)
4) Oregon-In 1846 the American entered Oregon Territory and the whole Pacific coast to the north of California was joined to the U.S.

-Lincoln himself hesitated to abolish slavery. It was after one and half year he issued The Emancipation Proclamation – all slaves in United States shall be free-It changed the war – it had now revolutionary basis

-A military turning point of the war was Lee´s (general of Confederacy) defeat at Gettysburg in 1863-In 1864 Lincoln found a general of Union - Grant

The end of the Civil War-1st April 1865 – Northern troops captured Richmond – capital of Southern Confederacy-9th April 1865– General Lee surrendered to General Grant – the end of the War-The Civil War cost 215,000 lives-14th April 1865– Lincoln was assassinated by the agent of the South – actor Booth during the performance at Ford´s Theatre in Washington – they celebrated the Northern victory (it was 5 days after the end of the war)
