EARLY HISTORYApostle St. Thomas, led by the Holy Spirit, travelled in India to spread the Good News ofsalvation through Jesus Christ and came to Kodungalloor, Kerala in A.D. 52 He ordained aspriests four families named Sankarapuri, Pakalomattom, Kally, Kaliyankal.

Later one of these families, Pakalomattom, came to Kuravilangad and settled there. One ofthe branches of the Pakalomattom family, owing to some local competition and rivalry, movedaway from Kuravilangad and came to Thengumpally at Murani near Mallappally.

At that time the area which included the present Mallappally, was under the king of Edappally.The family or branch of the above said family established very close relationship with thelocal ruler, the Raja of Edapally. The Raja was interested in the martial arts and the fourbrothers of the family branch were greatly skilled in such ancient techniques of warfare namelyKalaripayat. The Rajas encouraged the four brothers to establish Kalari to teach the princesand warriors.

In turn the Raja bestowed upon the brothers the right to vast regions of land.

Later one of these brothers, named Itty changed his residence from Thengumpally toAmbunkayam.

Ninan, one of the sons of our ancestor Itty, married Annamma of Mathilunkal family, Thiruvalla.Ninan was very friendly with some Brahamin families who were dependants of the Raja.Ninan who was adept at Kalaripayat became a very important person for them, for they wantedto learn the technique of this ancient warfare from him. He set up a Kalari to teach them andthey in turn made all arrangements for the master's residence at Ericad. Ninan with his wifeAnnamma settled at Ericad in the middle of the 17th century and there began the long historyof one of the most illustrious syrian christian families of Central Travancore. Ninan is consid-ered the progenitor of the Vadassery family which has grown to twenty nine branches. Namely,Elanjimatam (Karimpil), Padinjare Ilanjimattom (Kaduppil), Padinjare Ilanjimattom(Parayiramlil), Malemattam, East Ilanjimattam, Puthenpurayil Chirakkeel, Manjakkil, Peruveli,Kaniyamparampil, Pandalamuri, Akkara Chirathalattu, Puthenchantha Chirathalat, ChirathalatKollamparambil, Chirathalat Kizakkethalackal, Chirathlat Thazhathe Veettil, Nedumoottil,Kaduppil, Chirappuram, Kizhakkekuttu, Kothakeril, Ettuparayil, Vadassery Mundakkal,Pandaakunnel and Udumbanad).

Chirathalattu Ninan and Aleyamma moved from Thrikkothamangalam and settled atChirathalath, Vakathanam (Kockot). The couple had five sons. The eldest of these, Chandymarried Mariamma of Kurichy Ambalakadavil Kochillathu family and settled at the northernsideof the ancestral home in 1885. Their occupation was mainly farming and cattle rearing. Thecouple had six sons and six daughters.
