Introducing Natural Gas 引入天然氣發電 HK Electric introduced the use of natural gas as fuel to generate electricity in 2006 with the commissioning of its frst gas-fred generation unit at an extension to Lamma Power Station (LPS), delivering on its commitment to a cleaner and greener future. Thanks to the advanced technology and a careful selection of gas turbine model, the introduction of gas in the extension of the coal-fred LPS has enabled us to provide green power to our customers while ensuring a reliable power supply for all. Since 2010, gas-fred generation contributes to about 30% of the electricity produced every year by LPS. Introducing Natural Gas引入天然氣發電 HK Electric introduced the use of natural gas as fuel to generate electricity in 2006 with the commissioning of its first gas-fired generation unit at an extension to Lamma Power Station (LPS) delivering on its commitment to a cleaner and greener future

Thanks to the advanced technology and a careful selection of gas turbine model the introduction of gas in the extension of the coal-fired LPS has enabled us to provide green power to our customers while ensuring a reliable power supply for all Since 2010 gas-fired generation contributes to about 30 of the electricity produced every year by LPS

Advantages of Natural Gas

Natural gas burns with less emissions than other fossil fuels and offers the best available option for cleaner and more efficient power generation To generate an equivalent amount of electricity the use of natural gas produces much less carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides while sulphur dioxide and particulates emissions are close to zero

A 335-megawatt and another 345-megawatt gas-fired units combine a gas turbine system with a steam turbine system in the combined-cycle mode They have been used as base-load machines since 2006 and 2010 respectively increasing HK Electricrsquos gas-fired power generation to about 30 to meet the HKSAR Governmentrsquos emission reduction targets The 335-megawatt gas-fired unit commissioned in 2006 is one of the most efficient generating units in Hong Kong achieving an overall efficiency of over 55

The gas-fired unit is located at the 22-hectare extension to the south of Lamma Power Station 燃氣機組座落於佔地二十二公頃的南丫發電廠以南的擴建部分

天然氣的優點 燃燒天然氣所產生的排放物較其他化石燃料少故

此以天然氣發電將會更潔淨及更見效率若以生產

同等電力計算燃燒天然氣所產生的二氧化碳及

HK Electric has put in place a number of environmental initiatives for power generation and green resources are emphasised in the development of the LPS extension A solar photovoltaic system and micro wind-turbines are installed to provide energy for street lighting as well as other station facilities while the design of the L9 Main Station Building and 275kV Switching Station includes translucent cladding to introduce natural light

Ten per cent of reclamation materials for site formation came from recycled coal ash Rubble-mound seawalls on the south and the west edges of the extension enhance colonisation of marine organisms Rainwater is collected from rooftops for gardening and cleaning purposes while paving blocks are laid for transport and pedestrian access

的擴建部分亦著重應用綠色資源部分街燈及廠內

設施由太陽能光伏系統及風力發電提供能源而第

Natural Gas Resources

HK Electric is secured of a steady supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) through supply contracts originating from Australiarsquos North-West Shelf and Qatar The LNG is shipped to the Guangdong Dapeng LNG Receiving Terminal in Shenzhen where it will be gasified and delivered to LPS via a 92-kilometre pipeline

The pipeline buried three metres below the seabed is 20 inches in diameter It is designed to operate at a pressure between 80 to 90 bars in order to meet the eventual requirements of the Lamma extension in its fully developed state

The combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) unit synchronised in 2006 is situated at the 22-hectare extension south of the LPS where up to six units can eventually be accommodated Synergism through co-siting with the adjoining coal-fired station ensures most utilities are shared

Combustion of the gas generates power in the gas turbine A heat recovery steam generator utilises waste heat from flue gas in the gas turbine exhaust to produce steam that drives a steam turbine for secondary electricity generation An ldquoFrdquo class gas turbine with a firing temperature up to 1400˚C achieves particularly high operational efficiency

The single-shaft power-train and electrical equipment are housed inside the Main Station Building while the heat recovery steam generator is separately located alongside The main power block is oriented in an east-west direction with the heat recovery steam generator and chimney towards the east

A 110-metre chimney is already operational equipped with steel flue and reinforced concrete windshield The chimney is designed to hold three steel flues A once-through cooling system whose water intake comprises stop logs bar screens drum screens and circulating water pumps is located on the eastern side of the site Its outfall is sited on the west to avoid re-circulation of the cooling water

Monitoring and Control

Dedicated staff aided by a computerised control and supervision system ensure safe and reliable operation of gas facilities including the submarine pipeline and gas receiving station A specially designed on-line monitoring device monitors natural gas composition flow pressure and temperature Gas facilities would be shut down automatically to ensure safety if gas leakage is detected

The operation of the CCGT is controlled by a comprehensive distributed control system with all operations carried out automatically Alarms would be raised in the Central Control Room in case of emergency A closed-circuit television (CCTV) system monitors the external conditions of the gas facilities and the CCGT unit

Engineers monitor and control the operation of the gas-fired combined cycle unit in the Central Control Room工程人員在中央控制室監控機組的運作

At HK Electric safety always comes first There are 12 Natural Gas Controlled Areas in the power station where special precautionary measures are put in place for safety management At the Gas Receiving Station for example CCTV electronic locking system and gas detectors are installed for safety

A Natural Gas Safety Management System has been introduced to gear all procedures entailed in the design construction commissioning operation and maintenance of the gas facilities and the CCGT Specially devised programmes have also been implemented to promote safety awareness among employees and contractors and ensure that all personnel are fully trained in safety requirements and procedures

Natural Gas Resources

HK Electric is secured of a steady supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) through supply contracts originating from Australiarsquos North-West Shelf and Qatar The LNG is shipped to the Guangdong Dapeng LNG Receiving Terminal in Shenzhen where it will be gasified and delivered to LPS via a 92-kilometre pipeline

The pipeline buried three metres below the seabed is 20 inches in diameter It is designed to operate at a pressure between 80 to 90 bars in order to meet the eventual requirements of the Lamma extension in its fully developed state
