DIOS SE HACE HOMBRE, Su Santitad Benedicto XVI El relato de la Natividad según San Lucas, que acabamos de escuchar en el pasaje evangélico, nos dice que Dios, en primer lugar, ha levantado un poco el velo que lo ocultaba ante personas de muy baja condición, ante personas que en la gran sociedad eran más bien despreciadas: ante los pastores que velaban sus rebaños en los campos de las cercanías de Belén. Lucas nos dice que estas personas «velaban». Podemos sentirnos así atraídos de nuevo por un motivo central del mensaje de Jesús, en el que, repetid-amente y con urgencia creciente hasta el Huerto de los Olivos, aparece la invitación a la vigilancia, a permanecer despiertos para percibir llegada de Dios y estar preparados para ella. Por tanto, también aquí la palabra significa quizás algo más que el simple estar materialmente despiertos durante la noche. Fueron realmente personas en alerta, en las que estaba vivo el sentido de Dios y de su cercanía. Personas que estaban a la espera de Dios y que no se resignaban a su aparente lejanía de su vida cotidiana. A un corazón vigilante se le puede dirigir el mensaje de la gran alegría: en esta noche os ha nacido el Salvador. Sólo el corazón vigi-lante es capaz de creer en el mensaje. Sólo el corazón vigilante puede infundir el ánimo de encaminarse para encontrar a Dios en las condiciones de un niño en el establo. Roguemos en esta hora al Señor que nos ayude también a nosotros a convertirnos en personas vigilantes. San Lucas nos cuenta, además, que los pastores mismos estaban «envueltos» en la gloria de Dios, en la nube de luz, que se encontraron en el íntimo resplandor de esta gloria. Envueltos por la nube santa escucharon el canto de alabanza de los ángeles: «Gloria a Dios en el cielo, y en la tierra paz a los hombres que Dios ama». Y, ¿quiénes son estos hombres de su be-nevolencia sino los pequeños, los vigilantes, los que están a la espera, que esperan en la bondad de Dios y lo buscan mirando ha-cia Él desde lejos? En los Padres de la Iglesia se puede encontrar un comentario sorprendente sobre el canto con el que los ánge-les saludan al Redentor. Hasta aquel momento –dicen los Padres– los ángeles conocían a Dios en la grandeza del universo, en la lógica y la belleza del cosmos que provienen de Él y que lo reflejan. Habían escuchado, por decirlo así, el canto de alabanza cal-lado de la creación y lo habían transformado en música del cielo. Pero ahora había ocurrido algo nuevo, incluso sobrecogedor para ellos. Aquél de quien habla el universo, el Dios que sustenta todo y lo tiene en su mano, Él mismo había entrado en la histo-ria de los hombres, se había hecho uno que actúa y que sufre en la historia. De la gozosa turbación suscitada por este aconteci-miento inconcebible, de esta segunda y nueva manera en que Dios ha manifestado –dicen los Padres– surgió un canto nuevo, una estrofa que el Evangelio de Navidad ha conservado para nosotros: «Gloria a Dios en el cielo, y en la tierra paz a los hombres que Dios ama». Tal vez podemos decir que, según la estructura de la poesía judía, este doble versículo, en sus dos partes, dice en el fondo lo mismo, pero desde un punto de vista diferente. La gloria de Dios está en lo más alto de los cielos, pero esta altura de Dios se encuentra ahora en el establo: lo que era bajo se ha hecho sublime. Su gloria está en la tierra, es la gloria de la humildad y del amor. Y también: la gloria de Dios es la paz. Donde está Él, allí hay paz. Él está donde los hombres no pretenden hacer autónomamente de la tierra el paraíso, sirviéndose para ello de la violencia. Él está con las personas del corazón vigilante; con los humildes y con los que corresponden a su elevación, a la elevación de la humildad y el amor. A estos da su paz, porque por me-dio de ellos entre la paz en este mundo. El teólogo medieval Guillermo de S. Thierry dijo una vez: Dios ha visto que su grandeza –a partir de Adán– provocaba resistencia; que el hombre se siente limitado en su ser él mismo y amenazado en su libertad. Por lo tanto, Dios ha elegido una nueva vía. Se ha hecho un niño. Se ha hecho dependiente y débil, necesitado de nuestro amor. Ahora –dice ese Dios que se ha hecho niño– ya no podéis tener miedo de mí, ya sólo podéis amarme. ...

MEANING OF CHRISTMAS, His Holiness Benedict XVI At the end of the Christmas Gospel, we are told that a great heavenly host of angels praised God and said: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!” (Lk 2:14). The Church, in the Gloria, has extended this song of praise, which the angels sang in response to the event of the holy night, into a hymn of joy at God’s glory – “we praise you for your glory”. We praise you for the beauty, for the greatness, for your goodness, which becomes visible to us this night. The ap-pearing of beauty, of the beautiful, makes us happy without our having to ask what use it can serve. God’s glory, from which all beauty derives, causes us to break out in astonishment and joy. Anyone who catches a glimpse of God experiences joy, and on this night we see something of his light. But the angels’ message on that holy night also spoke of men: “Peace among men with whom he is pleased”. The Latin translation of the angels’ song that we use in the liturgy, taken from Saint Jerome, is slightly different: “peace to men of good will”. The expression “men of good will” has become an important part of the Church’s vocab-ulary in recent decades. But which is the correct translation? We must read both texts together; only in this way do we truly un-derstand the angels’ song. It would be a false interpretation to see this exclusively as the action of God, as if he had not called man to a free response of love. But it would be equally mistaken to adopt a moralizing interpretation as if man were so to speak able to redeem himself by his good will. Both elements belong together: grace and freedom, God’s prior love for us, without which we could not love him, and the response that he awaits from us, the response that he asks for so palpably through the birth of his son. We cannot divide up into independent entities the interplay of grace and freedom, or the interplay of call and re-sponse. The two are inseparably woven together. So this part of the angels’ message is both promise and call at the same time. God has anticipated us with the gift of his Son. God anticipates us again and again in unexpected ways. He does not cease to search for us, to raise us up as often as we might need. He does not abandon the lost sheep in the wilderness into which it had strayed. God does not allow himself to be confounded by our sin. Again and again he begins afresh with us. But he is still wait-ing for us to join him in love. He loves us, so that we too may become people who love, so that there may be peace on earth. Saint Luke does not say that the angels sang. He states quite soberly: the heavenly host praised God and said: “Glory to God in the highest” (Lk 2:13f.). But men have always known that the speech of angels is different from human speech, and that above all on this night of joyful proclamation it was in song that they extolled God’s heavenly glory. So this angelic song has been rec-ognized from the earliest days as music proceeding from God, indeed, as an invitation to join in the singing with hearts filled with joy at the fact that we are loved by God. Cantare amantis est, says Saint Augustine: singing belongs to one who loves. Thus, down the centuries, the angels’ song has again and again become a song of love and joy, a song of those who love. At this hour, full of thankfulness, we join in the singing of all the centuries, singing that unites heaven and earth, angels and men. Yes, indeed, we praise you for your glory. We praise you for your love. Grant that we may join with you in love more and more and thus become people of peace. Amen.
