Honda SENSING/AcuraWatch

● Collision Mitigation Braking System(CMBS)

●Traffic Jam Assist

● Road Departure Mitigation(RDM)System

Honda SENSING and AcuraWatch combines millimeter-wave radar and a monocular camera system, thus using two types of sensors with differing characteristics to achieve a very precise level of recognition. The millimeter-wave radar can detect objects based on their position and speed, while the camera differentiates the same objects based on size and shape. This results in a high level of detection and recognition capability in front of the car. This technology offers a variety of functions providing a safer and more comfortable driving experience according to information of the vehicle condition, the driver’s operation, and so on.

Automated Driving Technology

● Advancement of automated driving technology

(A commissioned survey by Japan Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications)

Honda sets ”Serve people worldwide with the “joy of expanding their life’s potential” as 2030 Vision. We believe it is very important to eliminate traffic accident of mobility necessary for our life. Honda aims its automated driving technology development to provide zero traffic accident and the joy of mobility with freedom. Firstly, “collision prevention” technologies from autonomous driving research and development are applied to safety driving assistance system for a steady accident reduction. Also, we aim a mobility in freedom to everyone by removing anxiety of elder and beginner drivers, who is not good at driving. Further, advancing automated driving technology would provide “new joy of mobility” by a vehicle to fit closely with people, to stimulate their curi-osity , and to urge them to get. Honda establishes highway automated driving technology in 2020, then expand autonomous driving areas by enhancing adaptability to road environmental and region conditions.

The level of safety and reliability of automated driving must be significantly improved because an automated driving car needs to drive various traffic environments such as suburb, residential area, or shopping district, when its application is expanded from highways to surface streets. In addition to safety driving, passenger’s secure feeling must be provided, therefore the automated driving car needs to predict other traffic participants’ behaviors and to anticipate latent risks such as near-miss scenarios, predict subconscious unsafe incidents to take preventative safety actions. Also, the automated driving car sometimes encounters complicated traffic environments, such as going through traffic accident area or merging during traffic jam. At that time, the automated driving car must take safe and smooth driving as if an experienced driver does by cooperative driving, which can understand other traffic participants’ intention while communicating its intention to them. In order to realize automated driving providing safety and secure feeling in various scenes of actual driving environment, Honda proceeds with AI technology researches for anticipation, prediction and cooperative driving. We will apply those to the automated driving car near future.

In Latin America, anti-steal systems need for motorcycles and automobiles are very high, but anti-steal systems for motorcycle are not widespread due to the problem that communication charges can not be paid. Therefore, we devised a steal prevention system using inexpensive BLE with existing terrestrial digital broadcasting. At Brazil adapting the Japanese terrestrial digital TV system, Honda conducted a demonstration experiment in order to become a new service value of the Japanese terrestrial digital TV system.

CMBS monitors the risk of collision with vehicles ahead, prompting the driver to act when a risk of collision is detected and providing assistance to avoid a collision or reduce potential occupant injury and vehicle damage. This system monitors vehicles ahead,oncom-ing vehicles and pedestrians using millimeter-wave radar and a monocular camera, and the system provides audible and visual warnings to alert the driver as it applies light braking at a risk of collision. Vibrations in the steer-ing wheel can alert the driver with a detected oncoming vehicle. If the system deter-mines a collision is imminent, it increases braking power accordingly.

Traffic Jam Assist is an enhancement of a highway driving Lane Keep Assist (LKAS), by widening the operation speed to lower region. By combination with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Low Speed Following driving, it would assist drivers from a vehicle stop and up to high speed driving. By releasing drivers from frustration during jammed driving and from both psychological and physical stress, it would contribute to a safety driving after all.

This system uses a monocular camera to warn the driver if the vehicle starts to depart from its lane via a warning in the display and vibration in the steering wheel. It also will control the steering in an attempt to keep the car in its lane. In addition, if the system predicts that the vehicle will veer significantly off the road, i t will control the brakes to help keep the vehicle from going veering off the road.

Efforts towards the Next Generation Transport Project● Activities in the US U.S. Smart Mobility Corridor V2X Pilot Deployment

● Smart City Columbus

● Activities in Europe

Joining a Pan-European Level 3 AD Pilot Project

Activities in the motorcycle field

As a local partner in the Smart Columbus initiative and a major automotive stakeholder in the U.S. 33 Smart Mobility Corridor, Honda aims to help chart a new course for future mobility. Honda is currently working with the State of Ohio, academia and other local partners to explore the benefits and challenges of both connected and electric vehicle related technologies. These, and other efforts in the central Ohio region, will help Honda clearly see the full potential of many real-world applications that aim to enhance the peace of mind and improve mobility for our customers in the near future.

Starting in 2005, Honda has been proactively involved in V2X connectivity projects to improve traffic safety, including participation in the European automobile manufacturers-led CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium (aimed at the realization of connected, cooperative-driving support systems [C-ITS] using DSRC) and the DRIVE C2X project (Pan-European C-ITS field operational testing in actual traffic conditions) and supporting the C-ITS Corridor NL-DE-AT project led by the transportation ministries of the Netherlands, Germany, and Austria.

Honda is member of a Pan-European Level 3 AD Pilot (Pilot Operation Test) Project, funded by the European Commission under Horizon 2020, to test automated driving on public roads. Due to the higher dynamic requirements and the differences in European countries, challenging situations can be identified and used as a basis for competitive Honda AD functions globally.

It is anticipated that C-ITS will also provide a large benefit to motorcycles, which are sometimes overlooked in mixed traffic conditions. On the other hand, basic specifications of C-ITS and services provided for C-ITS are developed usually for automobiles. Therefore, it should be considered in suitability for motorcycles. Because of the differences between motorcycles and automobiles, C-ITS devices equipped to motorcycles should comply with tougher requirements for waterproof and durability against vibration. Three motorcycle manufacturers, Honda Motor Co., Ltd., Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. and BMW Motorrad, established the Connected Motorcycle Consortium (CMC) in 2015, aiming at fur-ther enhancement of motorcycle safety, and the consortium addresses the resolution of a variety of challenges for practical use of C-ITS systems. The CMC, joined by other motorcycle manufacturers, suppliers, ACEM, universities and research institutes, is continuing its activities.

INDONESIA■ Announcement of research experiment of mobile batterysharing as distributed energy resources.

Honda to begin from August 2019 (scheduled), announced plans to conduct a researchexperiment in Indonesia on battery sharing using the Honda Mobile Power Pack ( “MobilePower Pack” ) detachable mobile battery with electric mobility products, including electricmotorcycles powered by the Mobile Power Pack. This research experiment will be conducted as one of the projects subsidized by Japan’ s NewEnergy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) under the theme of a“research experiment of mobile battery sharing as distributed energy resources.”As the third largest motorcycle market in the world, Indonesia is facing an issue with air pollutionassociated with the increase in traffic volume. To address this issue, the Indonesian governmenthas announced a policy to facilitate the widespread use of electric mobility products. While being environmentally-responsible, electric mobility products still have some issues thatneed to be addressed, including range and charging time. The Mobile Power Pack and mobilityproducts powered by it are expected to solve such issues and provide a boost to the widespreaduse of electric mobility products. For this research experiment, we will install charging stations at several dozen locations, which willcharge multiple units of the Mobile Power Pack simultaneously and supply fully-charged MobilePower Packs to users at any time. Users of electric mobility products who experience a low batterylevel can stop at the nearest charging station and exchange their Mobile Power Pack for afully-charged one and get back on the road.

Honda started to conduct demonstration testing of the "Honda Mobile Power PackExchanger", a charging station unit designed for the utilization of the "Honda Mobile PowerPack" detachable mobile battery. As a system that enables utilization of surplus electricity,Honda install the Exchanger in the Romblon Island, Philippines. The demonstration testingtoward CO2emissions reduction is conducted jointly with Komaihaltec Inc. and started on September in 2017. Romblon Island is one of the small islands of the Philippines, where dieselpower generation is the primary source of energy and the island is therefore overly dependent onhigh-cost and high-CO2 energy. Romblon Island is also facing a challenge in ensuringstable power supply while accommodating electricity needs with large fluctuations in day-night demand. For this demonstration testing, Komaihaltec install a wind power generator and generate cleanenergy. Honda install the Exchanger where surplus electricity will be stored in the MobilePower Packs to realize highly-efficient energy use, through which the two companies will strive torealize a reduction in CO2 emissions.

[Environment] Striving toward a Zero-emission Society

● Use of FCVs and hydrogen energy

● “Generate,” “Use” and “Get Connected” with Hydrogen

● Participating in demonstration projects for hydrogen society

Over the years, Honda has continued to pursue technologies and products with low environmental impact in order to realize the “joy and freedom of mobility and a sustainable society where people can enjoy life.” In the vision we have drawn up, FCVs are positioned as the ulti-mate eco-friendly car that is driven by electricity generated by the chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen in air and does not emit CO2 when in operation. Honda is also working on the Smart Hydrogen Station (SHS), which generates hydrogen by electrolyzing water through electricity derived from renewable energy such as solar or wind power. Eliminating CO2 emissions not only when driving but also when pro-ducing hydrogen fuel means the FCV can indeed lay claim to being the ultimate eco-friendly car. The Power Exporter 9000 external power output device, which extracts electricity from vehicles such as FCVs and converts it to electric power for the home, can supply electric power equivalent of approximately seven days worth of average home use when connected to Clarity Fuel Cell, or the 9kVA (maximum) of power can be used in relatively large facilities such as evacuation centers.

Honda’s SHS can produce carbon-free hydrogen that is used to run FCVs. An external power output device then extracts carbon-free electric-ity from the FCV and connects it to use in daily living. Honda aims to realize a carbon-free society in the future based on the concept, “generate, use and get connected” with hydrogen. A number of local municipalities nationwide on board with the idea have already introduced FCVs, SHSs and external power output devices, including those in Tokushima, Miyagi, Saitama and Kumamoto prefectures as well as Kobe City. Once SHSs are set up in more public and private facilities and FCVs and external power output devices introduced, a hydrogen-based Virtual Power Plant (VPP) that can store renewable energy in the form of hydrogen at a regional level can be realized, transport the hydrogen in FCVs and supply it via external power output devices to places that require it. In terms of R&D, Honda has developed an SHS that gener-ates 70MPa hydrogen in addition to the standard 35MPa type in line with a shift to FCVs that fuel up with 70MPa pressure hydrogen. Honda also established a joint venture with General Motors (GM) for the production of fuel cell systems with a view to the future mass production of FCVs. In addition, Honda participates in the Hydrogen Council inaugurated in 2017. The council will ropose long- term tar-gets for energy conversion as a joint vision.

Honda is actively engaged in Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Vehicle demon-stration projects such as HyFIVE and H2ME 2 in Europa with providing Honda Clarity Fuel Cell vehicles. Honda gathers specific data from FCVs by using a monitoring system consisting of a vehicle equipped device and a dedicated cloud server. Honda improves the operation of FCVs by analyzing these obtained data. In this way, Honda can contribute to realize a hydrogen society.

● Traffic Signal Prediction SystemHonda has been participating in research and development activities of a new traffic management system, which is promoted by the National Police Agency of Japan (NPA), to realize mobility with reduced CO2 emissions. Honda developed a driving support system utilizing traffic signal information, called as Traffic Signal Prediction System

(TSPS), via model deployment in collaboration with NAP and Universal Traffic Management System (UTMS) Society of Japan, and started system installation in ACCORD for Japanese market since May 2016, and applied to multiple models in 2019. This system is designed to support smooth driving and environmental measures by using traffic signal information obtained from road-side infrastructure system, such as infrared beacons*. When a vehicle passes through a signalized intersection, the system provides recommended speed or optimal deceleration timing on the on-board display for smooth passing. Moreover, while waiting for the traffic light to turn green, the remaining red-light time is displayed to prevent a delay in resuming driving. With this support system, fuel economy enhancement and smooth driving support will be implemented by restraining unnecessary acceleration and deceleration when driving through the traffic signals.

The Honda Environment and Safety Vision is to realize “The Joy and Freedom of Mobility”and to provide “A Sustainable Society Where People Can Enjoy Life.”

We believe Intelligent Transport System (ITS) have an important role to play in the realization of this vision. Honda’s ITS development efforts focus on “Safety,” “Environment,” and “Comfort,” advancing in each direction individually as well as cooperatively. Our technological expertise and the ability of our associates to think outside the box are the key elements in our effort to bring people and their communities together to share in the joy of mobility.

As we strive to improve personal mobility even further, cooperative control linking the vehicle with the surrounding infrastructure will help pave the way to a safer, smoother traffic environment. We also believe the relentless pursuit of new technologies to accelerate the emergency and natural disaster response is the key to a more resilient society.

Above all, Honda remains committed to providing the joy and fun that only personal mobility can provide:• The exhilaration associated with feeling as one with one’s car or motorcycle.• Enjoying the beauty of the passing scenery and its changes with the seasons.• The warm, comfortable feeling associated with sharing time and space with close friends and

cherished family members.• Providing for memorable moments to be fondly remembered long thereafter.

These universal, simple yet irreplaceable joys and the associated pleasure of driving have been, are and always will be essential elements of Honda’s DNA. Honda’s ITS continues to advance the objective of sharing the joy and fun of mobility with everyone in the world.
