Our Ideology

We believe that the experience of living and working with people from varied cultural backgrounds creates understanding and respect, something that we should all work on and feel responsible for, in this world!

We are part of a worldwide network of like-minded organisations that strive to make a difference by encouraging youth on the values of service through Work Camps for the local communities. We send and receive young people from all across the globe, by giving an opportunity to everyone to make a difference in his/her own life and in the lives of others through the field of social work.

Volunteering is the heart of our work and activities. We initiate work camps together with local communities in building a more peaceful and self-content society. By placing volunteers throughout India and the world in various communities, we show interest in the work and lives of people, which in turn encourages them to take up their own initiatives and find local solutions to the problems. We also hope to make people more aware of the world in which they live and its unlimited possibilities.

Through this endeavour, we help open the minds of local communities towards internationalism in an age of globalization. It further encourages exchange of individual experiences and points of view among all the participants involved. It also creates awareness and reflection on one’s own culture.

By providing opportunities to participate in a workcamp, FSL-India considers that volunteers will get access to alternative education which includes a number of approaches to learning process other than mainstream education. Alternative education with a blend of local and global perspectives would vary widely, often

Page 4: Host Situation - 志工人力銀 · Web viewIt is 363 kilometres west of the state capital Lucknow and 200 kilometres south of the national capital New Delhi. With a population of

emphasizing the value of close relationships between international volunteers and local communities with adequate means for inter-cultural learning and exposure. This opportunity would also enhance the global competency of international volunteers as well as local youth, who are also expected to contribute substantially to bring the global dimension to local situations and place the local issues in the global scenario.

Expectations from the Volunteers

FSL-India expects all volunteers to:

Read and understand the information sheet and to attend the preparation meeting organised by the sending organisation.

Understand the values of service and volunteerism. Be committed to voluntary work and understand that this is not tourism. Cooperate with FSL-India by adapting to the new culture. Cooperate with the work camp team leader, who is in-charge at all times of the volunteer's security. Show responsibility towards their work. Adjust to the way of life in the project and camp surroundings. Realize that the living conditions are many times different than at home (no warm water/air-

conditioning, no easy access to international phone or internet, no easy transportation at all times, insects and mosquitoes etc.)

Be open-minded, flexible, leave prejudices behind and show initiative. Understand that a lot of time will be spent with local people who do not speak English fluently.

Volunteers should make an effort to communicate in the local language; this shows their interest. Be creative. Ideas for the work, discussions, the campsite, excursions, and free time are expected to

come from the group during the camp. Share your thoughts and ideas! Only English is accepted when others are around, even if they do not join in the conversation. Behaviour and dress code should be culture sensitive, especially while in the village or schools.

Moreover, being part of FSL-India team means that you are a member of an international community of volunteers from all over the world, which represents a unique and enriching experience for the youth. Besides, gaining new skills of communication, practical knowledge and hands-on experience, volunteers become aware of the importance of being socially active.

Costs Involved

FSL-India is a non–profit organisation and does not depend on public or external funding. All costs of the camp are sustained through participation fees from volunteers. Therefore volunteers are expected to pay the participation fee mentioned below besides all their personal costs needed to come to India (travel / visa / vaccinations etc.):

All work camps conducted by FSL-India last for two or three weeks.

FSL-India Work Camps

Two Weeks: 9,500 Rupees

FSL-India Special Work Camps (SPL)

Two Weeks: 12,500 Rupees

Three Weeks: 15,000 Rupees

FSL-India Special Work Camps (SPL):

FSL-India organizes Special Camps in order to facilitate further improvement and to go an extra mile to maintain a stronger relationship with its local partners. Special camps deliver extra support to the

communities. For example: Happy Hearts, building play parks, construction, painting, distribution of materials for education, medical aid, depending on the specific needs of the present situation. Some special camps are conducted for a period of three weeks.

What does the volunteer participation fee cover?

We are a non-profit organisation, and therefore we have kept our prices as affordable as possible to make it more accessible to youth to get involved in our programs. We do not receive any financial support from the government of India or from any other foreign agency.

The participation fee is spent as follows (from the most to the least expensive item):

1. Project Setup: this is the money that is spent to identify and set up projects. Some projects require more expenditures than others.

2. Volunteers hosting payments: FSL-India pays for the food, accommodation, transportation to project site for participants - which differs from project to project.

3. Running the camp: This includes all the materials needed for the project, tools, and professional charges for masons, plumbers, carpenters and so on. Happy hearts for the teaching projects is also included in the Project running cost.

4. Support expenses of local Indian youth trained and supported by us. 5. Donations to local social projects: apart from supporting local NGOs by the placement of

volunteers and by organising short-term work camps, FSL-India also makes occasional donations (in kind or in cash) to its International network and partner NGOs.

6. Office expenses including staff salaries, rents, telephone, internet, postage, photocopy, printing, stationery, electricity and other equipment.

7. International travel costs to attend Conferences and international meetings: FSL-India sends representatives to statutory meetings and conferences to interact with its worldwide partners and develop its activities.

8. International conferences and meetings: on such occasions, FSL-India also has to pay a participation fee.

9. International membership fees: Every year FSL-India renews membership of international networks and platforms of like-minded organisations.

Other Important Details

All Camps start on a Monday.

The info sheet will contain the general work details as per each project as well as information on the meeting points, contact information and other guidelines. The info sheets shall be sent at least one month before the camp starts. We expect you to read it at least once before joining the Work Camp.

The volunteers should subscribe to their own health insurance and take care of medical vaccinations needed for the specific area.

The social contact in the camp is as important as the work itself and respect for the local environment and community is expected at all times.

Initiative, Creativity and involvement are expected and could give the camp the personal direction of that group. So work together with the camp leaders in creating a successful project.

The participation fee must be paid on the first day of the camp to the Team Leader and in the local currency (Indian Rupees).

Since the budgeting of the camp is made in advance, as a strict policy there will be no refund of the participation fee.

REGULAR CAMPS

Bangalore (Social / Kids / Environment) : FSL-WC-547

The Project:

In this project we will work with different organisations involved in the development of the underprivileged. Our aim is to create awareness among the people and to give them more instruments to feel confident and feel free to decide for their future, and for the future of a new generation. FSL-India cooperates with several local NGOs in assisting various government schools by creating awareness about the environment; health and hygiene; working with local schools in teaching basic English and Math through creative learning methods; simple renovation activities like building toilets, painting, tree planting etc. The mission of this project is to:

Organize a multi-purpose project to involve the community and sensitize community/people about the Health & Hygiene problems.

Educate the children to build a better and more conscious society. Education and awareness on environmental issues to children and villagers. Work with other NGOs in community service projects.

The kind of schedule and the focus of the project will be adapted to the season, the possibilities and the needs of the moment, to improve the achievements in a long-term view. Every camp will be different. The work could be with orphan/school/street/slum children. The info sheets will give the full details about the particular camps.

Due to rapid development in recent years, Bangalore has to deal with environmental problems such as water pollution, air pollution, noise pollution, solid waste management etc. Recognising these concerns, FSL-India organises camps so as to address the environmental issues. To organise the camps, FSL-India cooperates with several local organisations that work on environmental issues. It focuses on a variety of short-term projects which include environmental protection, afforestation, tree planting, working along several NGOs to spread health and hygiene awareness among the community people. The work will vary largely in the camps and will include some simple physical work.

Coorg (Tribal / Rural / Environment) : FSL-WC-545

The Project:

Coorg or Kodagu means “dense forest on steep hill”. It is a district located near the city of Mysore (Karnataka State) amidst scenery of misty hills, lush forests, acres and acres of tea and coffee plantation, orange groves, undulating streets and breath-taking views. The district is not only unique in the types of vegetation but also in respect of the management of tree growth in the different land tenures of which there are 38 types.

The Coorg District accounts for a heavy concentration of tribal population. 90% of the tribes in Coorg subsist on their traditional economic system of hunting and gathering minor forest produces besides attempting sub-sistence farming. However, a part of the tribal life and culture in Coorg nowadays has become more or less homogeneous to the rural life of Coorg in general. The tribal life and culture in Coorg Karnataka is best re -flected in their fairs and festivals. Much of the fairs and festivals in Coorg concern the worship of local deities. The harvest festival- Huthri is also an important name on the festival map of Coorg.

Coorg also has all the environmental problems associated with an ecologically, culturally and economically conducive place of human settlement. The major issues are related to: (a) Lack of a Comprehensive Forest Policy ; (b)Monoculture and Exotic tree Species ; (c) Depletion of Soil Nutrients ; (d) Water Pollution ; (e) Solid Waste Managment ; (f) Human-Animal Conflict.

Recognising these concerns, FSL-India organises camps so as to address the environmental issues. To organise camps, FSL-India cooperates with several local organisations that work on environmental issues. It focuses on a variety of short-term projects which include environmental protection, afforestation, tree planting, working along several NGOs to spread health and hygiene awareness among the tribal villages, working with local schools in teaching English, building toilets and assisting various underprivileged schools. The town of waterfalls - Courtallam otherwise known as Kutralam is situated on the Western Ghats in Thirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu, India. The numerous waterfalls and cascades along with the health resorts in the area have earned it the title of “the Spa of South India”. The closest towns to Courtallam are Sengottai and Tenkasi at 5 kilometres respectively. The three major waterfalls reachable by road are the Main Falls, Five Falls, and Old Courtallam Falls. Other waterfalls like Shenbaga Devi Falls and Honey Falls are reachable only by trekking on the mountain. Today Courtallam has become a centre of attraction - people from far and wide visit the locations to enjoy the nature.

Work camps here will be organised with the cooperation of local community for rural development and water shed management, environmental education and working together with local villages in rural development projects. Most of the schools lack basic infrastructure like school building, education material, playground and drinking water. Volunteers can make a big difference in the daily lives of these children by providing the necessities listed above.

The work camp will involve teaching children from poor and marginalized community in the formal and non-formal schools about basic English and Mathematics, Health and Hygiene, and Environmental protection through creative learning methods like art, music, games etc. There will also be house visits and meetings with local people as part of inter-cultural learning and to give awareness on health and hygiene. Volunteers can take the school children to places in the town like picnics and exposure visits. In addition, volunteers also will get a chance to take part in simple renovation work at local schools/orphanages and engage in activities like painting, tree plantation, promoting rainwater harvesting etc. As part of the cultural exchange, volunteers will witness and participate in the cultural programs with local community.

Location:

Courtallam is located in Tamil Nadu state and is accessible by domestic airlines. Trains and buses operate on a daily basis from Chennai and Bangalore – both Chennai and Bangalore have an International airport. The closest airport to Courtallam is Tuticorin Airport (TCR) approximately 90 kilometres away, and the nearest railway station is Tenkasi, 5 kilometres away. The exact Meeting Point will be mentioned in the info sheets.

Accommodation: At a rented Guest House or Hostel with shared rooms.

Jodhpur – Rajasthan (Social / Culture / Kids) : FSL-WC-542, 553

The Project:

Rajasthan was inhabited long before 2500 BC and the Indus Valley Civilization had its foundation here in north Rajasthan itself. Around 1400 BC the Aryans paid a visit and settled down forever in the area. The local population was pushed down to south and towards the east. Afghans, Turks, Persians and Mughals followed in mixing their blood, first in war then in peace, with the existing original inhabitants. This blend gave the martial lineage to the Rajputs (member of any of several powerful Hindu landowning and military lineages). Jodhpur is a popular tourist destination featuring many palaces, forts and temples. The city is known as the Sun City for the bright sunny weather it enjoys all year. It is also referred as the Blue City due to the indigo tinge of the whitewashed houses around the Mehrangarh Fort.

Work camps here will be organised with the cooperation of local community for rural development and water shed management, environmental education and working together with local villages in rural development projects. Most of the schools around Jodhpur lack basic infrastructure like school building, education material, playground and drinking water. Volunteers can make a big difference in the daily lives of these children by providing the necessities listed above.

The work camp will also involve teaching children from poor and marginalized community in the formal and non-formal schools about basic English and Mathematics, Health and Hygiene, and Environmental protection through creative learning methods like art, music, games etc. There will also be house visits and meetings with local people as part of inter-cultural learning and to give awareness on health and hygiene. Volunteers can take the school children to places in the town like picnics and exposure visits. In addition, volunteers also

A city of Joy and Love, Grandeur and Glory... Kolkata also known as Calcutta, is full of life and bustle, verging on the chaotic as traditional occupations rub shoulders with ultramodern industries. Kolkata is India's second largest city, the capital of West Bengal and the formerly the capital of British India (1772-1912). It is a city with a great deal of charm - its imperial monuments, strong cultural and religious favour.

However it is also suffering from a terrible lack of hygiene, illiteracy and unemployment are rampant, and the first to suffer from these poor living conditions are the children. In an effort to bring a bit of joy back to the faces of the street/slum and orphan children of Calcutta, FSL-India in co-operation with local NGO’s will conduct a Happy Hearts Work Camp: it will consist of a series of “Happy Hearts” sessions in which the group of volunteers will organise activities to entertain and open the minds of the children to the outside world. Volunteers will also undertake some smple renovation work in the schools like painting, toilet and kitchen repair work, tree planting, making a Kitchen garden etc. This Workcamp will feature one week of creative education and one week of continuous special activities. In our regular programs we have a day or two to plan for the “Happy Hearts” but in this camp, the second week will have visit activities such as visit to the planetarium, amusement park, picnincs and so on. This camp is also dependant on the number of registrations for the camp. These activities are possible if the received participant applications are at least 12 volunteers.

Kundapur is a town situated near the beach on the west coast of Karnataka state, and is very close to the Western Ghats (a mountain ridge). The Western Ghats is India's prime zone for bio-diversity and known for its animal and plant species in this region. FSL-India has been involved in developing projects for many years in this region and has now formed a very strong network of local partners and local volunteers. Invariably this is one of the prime locations for FSL-India to initiate development interventions in partnership with the local NGOs and civil society organisations.

Environment degradation is one of the major issues at Kundapur. To address the environmental issues, FSL-India adopted the “Model Street program” in Kundapur and is raising awareness on the need of recycling and organic compost making by engaging the local community. We get the residents to separate their garbage and the volunteers regularly visit to ensure locals understand the need of this activity and carry it out. This street is a small scale model and in future we hope it will be replicated and scaled up for the benefit of many. We will employ a process of sustainability approach to Eco friendly activities in the community, by adopting the strategies of home visits, surveys, community based organisations training, advocacy and campaign, green youth group development, cotton bag promotion, implementing of small scale Eco projects and other creative, need-based activities will be undertaken in the days to come.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring in their innovations, suggestions and creativity to the project. There are no limitations to this project in so far as development is concerned. However, fixed work (school sessions, Eco-friendly streets and Eco clubs, and community work) will be the usual events for the volunteer to participate in. Nevertheless, new ideas are always welcome. FSL-India cooperates with several local NGOs in assisting various government schools by creating awareness on environment, health and hygiene; work with local schools in teaching basic English and Math through creative learning methods; simple renovation activities like painting, tree planting, making a Kitchen garden etc.

SPECIAL CAMPS:

FSL-India has been organising Special Camps at different locations with strategic partners all over India. The difference to the regular camps is that they are conducted with special topics, which are distinctive from the regular work that FSL-India does in other locations. These projects are planned with a long-term sustainable goal and therefore involve works that are intended to change the lives of many people who deserve special care and attention. These camps are special since the work itself will be initiated and run by FSL-India with a long term mission. In addition, the materials, planning and preparations cost more investment in terms of financial resource.

Badami – Karnataka (Heritage conservation / Awareness) : FSL-SPL-207-WHV-BADAMI

NOTE TO PARTNERS: This camp is conducted in partnership with CCIVS/UNESCO and is part of the World Heritage Volunteers (WHV) initiative. We request your cooperation in promoting this special camp among your volunteers.

WORLD HERITAGE VOLUNTEERS – BADAMI

Badami is 22 kms from Pattadakal, which is well known for its historic temples. In 1987, UNESCO included Pattadakal in its list of World Heritage Sites. Historically Badami was the centre of ancient Chalukyan glory. Badami today is a sleepy little town on a red sandstone ridge. The Chalukyas are credited with some of the best traditions of Dravidian architecture including an experimental blend of older South Indian temple architecture and the Nagara style of north India. It was home to several rock-cut temples. Badami’s Archeological interest lies in a series of cave temples of 6th century AD excavated for both Hindu and Jain deities.

UNESCO World Heritage Center along with CCIVS (Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Sevice) and partner organizations launched the initiative “World Heritage Volunteers” - aimed at raising awareness about the necessity to protect, preserve and promote cultural and natural heritage sites. In 2010 and 2011, FSL-India decided to participate in this initiative by organizing the World Heritage Volunteers camp in Hampi. The success of previous camps has encouraged us to continue our partnership with CCIVS/UNESCO and World Heritage Volunteers.

The main objective of the camp would be to spark interest among the local community by involving children, youth and international volunteers in activities that promote sensitivity and respect towards the World Heritage site at Pattadakal and Badami. The work will require a lot of creativity and motivation from the volunteers to convey the message through dramas, plays etc. Volunteers will be involved in the following activities:

A. Involve the local school children in activities to raise awareness about culture and heritage conservation.B. Clean up activities around the temples and monuments, which is most visited by tourists and Pilgrims.C. Preparation of Nursery by planting saplings and encouraging children to look after them. D. Organizing Drawing competition for the school children and opening it up to local people by setting up an open art gallery. E. Conduct an Awareness walk or Street Play on Heritage conservation with the help of local tour guides and university students.F. Form “Heritage Clubs” in schools, with an aim to initiate active participation of youth by encouraging school children to become “Young Guardians / Ambassadors” of the Heritage sites.

Dharamsala is set in the backdrop of the snow-clad peaks of Dhaulathar Mountains. It is the capital of the Tibetan Government in exile and the residence of the Dalai Lama.

FSL-India has been conducting regular workcamps in McLeodganj, Dharamsala for almost 4 years now. During this period, we noticed that there are many areas around Dharamsala where children have to walk long distances daily (sometimes upto 10kms) to attend a school. Shortage of schools and lack of public transportation makes it difficult for children in these areas to have access to a school. To address this issue, FSL-India has decided to build a center and a school in one of the areas around Dharamsala. The FSL-India center will have 2 permanent staff to manage the placement of our Long Term Volunteers (LTV's) in the school. The LTVs will stay at the FSL-India center and manage the daily educational activities at the school with the support of our staff and local trained teachers.

This workcamp will not be held in the more touristic McLeodganj area of Dharamsala, but will be held in the foothills of Himachal Pradesh. In the first two weeks of the camp, the volunteers will take part in construction of the school building and the center. There will be skilled laborers hired to work along with the volunteers. The volunteers will also get the opportunity to learn about the Tibetan culture and the different issues related to the exile of its people and the re-settlement in India. The Project:

The culture of Kerala is a synthesis of Dravidian and Aryan cultures, developed and mixed for centuries, under influences from overseas lands. Ayurveda is a 5000 year old Indian health care system that is widely practiced even today. "Ayur" in Sanskrit means "life" and "Veda" mean "science". It is a perfect Science of health and longevity. This holistic science is the knowledge of complete balance of the Body, Mind and Spirit, including the emotions and psychology, on all levels. It includes in its consideration, longevity, rejuvenation and self-realization therapies through herbs, diet, exercise, yoga, massage, aromas, tantras, mantras, and meditation. According to Ayurvedic tradition, health is the balance of the elements air, earth, fire, and water and illness is an excess or deficiency of any particular element.
