  • 7Hong Kong Sinfonietta is one of Hong Kongs

flagship orchestras. With Yip Wing-sie as Music

Director, the orchestra has brought music closer to

the community, and has achieved significant

recognition locally and internationally for its

    passionate performances and innovative

    programming.

Since 1999, Hong Kong Sinfonietta has

collaborated with an i l lustrious array of

    international musicians and groups, including

    Vladimir Ashkenazy, Plcido Domingo, Augustin

Dumay, Fou Tsong, Christopher Hogwood, Luciano

Pavarotti, Pinchas Zukerman, The Royal Ballet,

Mariinsky Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, English National

Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, New York City

Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet and Tanztheater Wuppertal

Pina Bausch. The orchestra has also been a regular

participant at all the major festivals in Hong Kong

including the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Le French

May, Hong Kong International Film Festival and

festivals presented by the Hong Kong Government.

It also partners regularly with Hong Kong Ballet

and Opera Hong Kong in their staged productions.

The orchestra performs year-round with over 100

performances a season and has been the Venue

Partner of the Hong Kong City Hall since 2009.

Apart from standard orchestral repertoire, Hong

Kong Sinfonietta, as an avid believer of keeping

music alive and contemporary, commissions and

performs new works every year and ventures into

crossover concerts both at the City Hall and at the

residency at ArtisTree. Launched in 2006, the HKS

Artist Associate scheme provides a platform for

intensive collaboration with local artists from

different arts disciplines to expand the horizon of

    classical music. The orchestras discography

includes CDs of works by Chinese composers on

HUGO and three double-CD albums This is Classical

Music on DECCA. The third album has been

awarded a Gold Record since its release in

    November last year.

On the educational front, Hong Kong Sinfonietta

    has pioneered specially-designed concerts for

different age groups. New concepts on the Hong

Kong concert stage, Good Music for Kids, Good

Music for Babies, Know Your Classical Music,

Short-cut to Classical Music and HKS McDull Music

Project have provided a new realm in audience

development. Since 2010, Hong Kong Sinfoniettas

chamber music concerts have continued to break

down barriers between music and audience as we

    perform at unconventional spaces.

On tour, Hong Kong Sinfonietta has been invited to

perform in North America in Canada and New York

City; in Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay in South

America; in Europe at the prestigious Festival

We have been welcoming McDull to our Hong Kong Sinfonietta concerts since 2006, but this time he has

brought his mum! And it is quite clear from the programme that McDull got his love of music from his

mum as there are so many catchy dances and songs included in the programme. I would not be that

surprised if there is a little bit of gypsy blood in McDulls mum perhaps an ancestor from central Europe,

which might help to explain so much of the music in todays programme.

There are two main composers the Norwegian Edvard Grieg and Bohemian Antonn Dvork (from

modern-day Czech Republic) but we will meet on the way two Soviet-era Russians (opening and closing

proceedings), a Frenchman (admittedly with a Spanish accent) and two Italians. And if your toes are not

tapping by the end of the concert, then you must have wooden legs!

Dangerous dancingLets meet our first composer, Aram IlyichKhachaturian (19031978). Actually he wasArmenian, while he was born in Georgia whichwas then part of the Soviet Union. He is bestknown for his ballet scores Gayane and Spartacusand, from the first of those, composed in 1942,comes the fast and frenetic Sabre Dance.

The ballet is set on a collective cotton farm in hisArmenian homeland, on the borders of Iran, whichallowed Khachaturian to use music from threedistinct communities Caucasian, Armenian andKurdish. The Sabre Dance comes from the end ofthe ballet when our heroine, Gayane (also, incidentally, the name of Khachaturians wife), getsto marry her true love, Kasakov. There is a bigwedding and lots of traditional national dances, which Khachaturian also included in his three suitesfrom the score. Undeniably exciting, with itspumping accompanying rhythms, the music is asfast and furious as the dance must be dangerous.

National favourites Say hello to both our main composers very nearcontemporaries who were born within two years ofeach other and died within three, some 60 yearslater Antonn Dvork (18411904) and EdvardGrieg (18431907). Both lived on the borders ofwhat was then the overpowering German musicaltradition, and are part of the growing individualismin music of the 19th century known as nationalistmusic.

Bohemian beautiesThat such music was popular is easily proved.Dvorks publisher, Simrock (who had beenintroduced to him by the German composerJohannes Brahms), had made a lot of money inpublishing Brahms Hungarian Dances and hopedDvork would do something similar and Dvorkobliged with a set of eight Slavonic Dances inspring 1878, originally composed for piano duetand only then orchestrated. They were published ashis Op 46 and were, predictably, a great success, introducing Dvork to Paris, London and New York.We hear first his Slavonic Dance in A-flat, Op 46No 3, which may sound rather gentle to start, butits second, short, theme ups the tempo in the formof a polka-like dance, punctuated often with threecymbal-led chords. The two sections alternate, untilthe faster section rushes headlong to the end.

Needless to say, Simrock was eager for a sequel, but Dvork was a little more cautious, replying todo the same thing twice is devilishly difficult. However, despite his own wish to concentrate onmore serious works (he was writing his Sixth andSeventh Symphonies, the opera Dmitrij and theviolin concerto at this time), eight years later hereturned to the form and produced another set ofeight dances, this time published as Op 72. TheSlavonic Dance in E minor, Op 72 No 2 is adumka. Ukrainian in origin, the dumka is elegiac intone, even within the change of tempo for thesecond section in this famous example notstraying far from the Allegretto grazioso. The minorkey tinges the music with an autumnal, nostalgicglow that the second theme does not quite dispel.Watch the cellos and violas pluck their stringsproducing a specific sound called pizzicato. Thistime it is the slower, quieter music that ends thedance.

While we are introducing Dvork, lets look at theother two pieces by him we wil l hear. HisHumoresque in G-flat was originally as thepenultimate in a set of eight piano pieces, composed in the summer of 1894, when Dvorkwas holidaying back in Bohemia away from hisposition as director of the New York Conservatory. He started on 19 July and the score for the fullcycle was finished just over a month later on 27August. It was published immediately, and thedotted rhythm of the opening theme of theseventh piece became immensely popular, so muchso that Dvorks publisher Simrock hastened itspopularity by having it arranged for variouscombinations of instruments, and even havinglyrics added to it, so it is perfectly in keeping tohear it as arranged for orchestra. It has a verybeguiling slow, gentle melody, which you mayrecognise immediately, even if you did not know itsofficial title.

Our last piece by Dvork is another transcription, this time from a very appropriate song for McDullsconcert today. It is the fourth of his Gypsy Songs,Op 55 and called Songs My Mother TaughtMe. He composed the song cycle in 1880 for theGerman tenor Gustav Walter and we know Waltersang the first and fourth song (this one!) on 4February 1881 in Vienna, where he was based.Over 20 years later Walter was one of the firstGerman artists to have his voice recorded, thoughunfortunately he did not (as far as we know) recordDvorks Gypsy Songs. You can imagine a motherteaching her children the song: it is a simple tuneand is repeated, and you may find yourselfhumming it long after leave the concert.

Norwegian notesAnd so to Grieg, who is best known for his PianoConcerto, his ten-book cycle of solo piano LyricPieces and his incidental music to famousNorwegian playwright, Henrik Ibsens sprawlingplay, Peer Gynt. We will get to Peer Gynt in amoment, but you may know that one of the mostpopular pieces from Griegs music from it is In theHall of the Mountain King, which describes Peersadventures with the mythical trolls. Well, as thethird of his fifth book of Lyric Pieces, Op 54 hewrote (in 1891) a similar piece called Trolltog March of the Dwarfs (or Trolls) and he laterorchestrated it as the final movement of his LyricSuite. You will hear the Norwegian little folkcoming closer and closer, then in the middlesection revealing a beautiful green valley behindthem, whereupon Grieg simply repeats the wholeof the first section.

Griegs music for Peer Gynt predates the Marchof the Dwarfs by 17 years. Ibsens sprawlingdramatic poem had been earlier still written inItaly in 1867 and was not really intended for thestage, but in 1874 Ibsen wrote to Grieg (thebrother of his German translator, Jan Grieg) askingif he would compose the music for a fullproduction. Grieg persuaded himself that it wasonly a question of some fragments here andthere, yet spent long hours on it, only finishing itin September 1875, with the first performance inChristiania (now Oslo) in February 1876.

Grieg eventually wrote 32 fragments for this andtwo subsequent productions, including songs (theoriginal In the Hall of the Mountain King has achorus) and, although Ibsen was not completelysatisfied with the music, it is Griegs melodies thathave made Peer Gynt famous throughout theworld, particularly through the two suites Griegmade in 1888 and 1891. We hear a single excerptfrom each suite. First is Anitras Dance (the thirdof the First Suite), where the sound of a triangle

adds an oriental touch to which is marked tempodi mazurka. The mazurka is a Polish dance (Chopincomposed lots of them), and perhaps seems out ofplace in the desert sands of Arabia where Peermeets Anitra. Grieg specifically requested that Iwould like this quiet little dance to be performed ina really nice and delicate manner.

From the Second Suite we hear the last piece,Solveigs Song, which is a beautiful lament avision Peer has after he has lost his Arabian wealth.Meandering, soft strings, yearning and plaintive, lead to a gently pulsing accompaniment for thefamous melody, where Solveig (the girl he left yearsbefore in Norway) sings of her belief that, howeverlong it takes, Peer will come back, and she will bewaiting. In the play, there is a wordless chorus toaccompany her as she works at the spinning wheel.Grieg said the whole song must be kept in thestyle of a folk song, and here the vocal line isassimilated into the orchestral textures.

  • 20

Sunny SpainNow we can hardly have a concert withoutsomething from an opera especially as we havealready had some music from a stage play. Andthere can be no more popular opera than Carmenby Georges Bizet (18381875). Carmen was hislast completed work, and was premiered at Opra-Comique in Paris on 3 March 1875 and it shockedthe audience as it is not a comic opera at all.Unfortunately, Bizet died just 30 days after thepremire, not knowing that it would be this workon which his reputation would rest.

Every melody Bizet wrote for Carmen is now apopular hit, and it was not long after his death thatsuites of the music were made. We hear theIntermezzo from the First Suite, which on stage heralds Act III, the scene is the Brigands mountainhideaway. The night is calm and a languorous fluteweaves its magic spell by gently encouraging otherinstruments to overlap with its melody. Listen outfor the delicate plucking of the harp.

Latin legendsWe also visit Italy, first for another dance and thenfor a return to the opera. Italian composer VittorioMonti (18681922) is now only remembered forthis irrepressible Csrds , even though hecomposed several ballets and operettas. Like manycomposers indeed as we have heard in Dvorkssong transcription and Slavonic Dances Montiwas bewitched by folk music, and especiallyHungarian gypsy music. Around 1904 he composedthis work which takes its name from the Hungarianword for a country inn (csrda), as well asencapsulating the sort of music that was used inrecruiting into the Austro-Hungarian army, calledverbunkos (from the old German for recruiting,Werbung), which alternated between slow(lass) and fast (friss) music. Monti follows this planto the letter. He starts slow and, ever morebrilliantly, gets faster and more thrilling as herushes to the end. Not surprisingly it is a favouriteamongst solo violinists.

Almost exactly contemporary with Monti, thefamous Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini(18581924) wrote a single comedy, GianniSchicchi, which originally formed part of a trilogywith two more tragic pieces Il Tabarro (The Cloak)and Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica). Together theyare known as Il Trittico (Triptych). It premiered atthe Metropolitan Opera, New York, in 1918.

When a greedy family wants to benefit from thewill of a dead relative who has left all his money tocharity, they appeal to Gianni Schicchi a schemer who imitates the dead man, as if he is still alive,so a new will can be written. But Schicchi thendictates that most of the money should go to him,but it is only because his daughter Lauretta is inlove with a young man, Rinuccio, from the family. The money is to ensure that they can marry.O Mio Babbino Caro (Oh, My Dear Daddy) isa short lyrical aria for Lauretta, who sings withunmistakably luscious Puccinian accompaniment, strings and harp to the fore that she wantsimmediately to buy an engagement ring, but if sheloves in vain she would rather go and jump off abridge. It is on her instance that Schicchi comes upwith his clever plan.

Russian finaleIs it that time already? We have come to the last

piece. And like any party, the last piece is a waltz,

here seen through the eyes of Russian composer

Dmitri Shostakovich (19061975). Perhaps bestknown for his epic symphonies and tautly

emotional string quartets, he also wrote lots of

lighter music for films, dance halls, stage both

plays and ballet. He wrote his Suite for Variety(or Promenade) Orchestra for the newly-formedState Orchestra for Jazz, conducted by Victor

Knushevitsky in 1938. Also known as his Second

Jazz Suite, it has eight dance movements including

three waltzes (the first is simply known as Lyrical

Waltz, then Waltzes I and II).

The final waltz Waltz II has a glistening sheento it and memorably makes use of the saxophone.

It will send McDull, his mum and all of you out of

the concert hall with a swing in your step.
