Why Card Sorting?Information architects and other digital innovators make use of card sorting to create overall structure for their information. Once a strategy is planned out, companies either opt to test these decisions one at a time or decide to have groups sort together.

There are two primary types of card sorting: Open Sorting and Close Sorting. Conducting an open-card sort has participants sorting all the cards into different groups, then naming those groups according to what niches or categories they best fill. Closed sorting, on the other hand, is very similar, except that the tester comes up with predefined categories and has test subject come up to sort the cards into those defined areas.

Some companies do their card sorting in person,with the designer monitoring the sorting process and seeing how users make their decisions, the test is also a good fit for the digital workplace. With people's busy schedules, remote group chats allow equally convenient ways to gather information, helping easily read out notes and handle web material. There are several online card sorting programs that companies can purchase or access for free, with many options for setting up tests, as well as helpful tutorials for analyzing the final data.
