Gothenburg also hosts one of Europe’s top music festivals and some of the world’s biggest youth sporting events. You have the sea, lakes, wide open spaces and forests right on your doorstep, and if you’re looking for
big adventure you won’t have to look far. Whatever the weather or season, Gothenburg is the place to experience the real Sweden.

TIME TO PLAY IN A GREEN SETTINGThe Garden Society of Gothenburg (Trädgårdsför-eningen) has its own playground, with clamber nets, swings and slides set in leafy surroundings. FREDRIK AND KARIN’S TIPS FOR ADVENTURES WITH KIDS
F E A T U R E
Adventure is never far away in Gothenburg. There are wild rapids, tranquil lakes, wonderful hiking trails and perfect conditions for climbing – all just a tram
ride away. Karin Fingal and Fredrik Schenholm are passionate about this side of Gothenburg.
BIG ADVENTURES FOR THE LITTLE ONES TOO
AGE 1–4 LOOK OUT FOR ANIMALS AND ENJOY NATURE
1. Lärjedalen is ideal for excursions with young children. You can take a pushchair along and there is so much to see. Watch out for beaver, birds and fish together.
2. There is a magical beech forest at Lilla Äng-gården. It’s a hidden gem, and ideal if you want a taste of nature without leaving the city.
AGE 5–11 CRAWL INTO CAVES AND PADDLE A CANOE
1. In Greggered, south of Gothenburg, there are awesome caves that you can crawl into. Everyone thinks they’re great!
2. Canoeing in Vättlefjäll is also ideal for children this age. There are also some really good wind shelters that you can spend the night in. Take along some hot dogs and marshmallows for a barbecue.
AGE 12–16 CLIMBING, SNORKELLING AND MOUNTAIN BIKING
1. Gothenburg has Sweden’s best climbing close to the city. Get some advice from someone who knows the ropes and try climbing in Utby. There are also perfect conditions for bouldering. There are plenty of skilled guides you can hire to assist you if needed.
2. Änggårdsbergen nature reserve, behind Gothenburg Botanical Garden, and Delsjö-området nature reserve, just outside the city, both have excellent offroad trails for mountain biking. Hire a bike and head out on an adventure.
3. Öckerö island provides ideal conditions for snorkelling. Visibility can be up to 15 metres and you can see soft corals and fish – big and small. All you need is a mask and snorkel.
In your blog “Det vilda Göteborg” you write about adventures that are close to the city. What is it that makes Gothenburg so unique?Karin: The landscape is so varied here. In our blog we only write about stuff that is no more than an hour from the city centre, but most of the places are much nearer than that. Take a ten-minute ride on public transport and you can have the forest all to yourself.
What are your best tips for someone who is here for a weekend and wants to see as much of the outdoors as possible?Fredrik: I’m a great fan of Lärjedalen. There is an eight-kilometre circular trail between Hjällbo and Angered, and walking along it is like stepping into another world. It has the feel of a rainforest, but it’s accessible by everyone. You can even take a pushchair if you want.
Karin: There is a wonderful bathing spot by the river Säveån, where the river forms a loop and the water rushes by. You could be in Thailand or South America, but it’s right next to Stenkullen station.
Fredrik: Yes, or you could head out to Vättlefjäll! Then it’s like being in northern Sweden instead, with its lakes, pine trees and spruce.
In spring, summer and autumn you can hire a canoe.
The paddling is awesome but totally family friendly. There are lots of wind shelters and little islands you can pull on to.
Karin: Gothenburg is absolutely brilliant for ice skating as well. We’re far enough north for the lakes to freeze, but there are always lakes that are free from snow.
What are the important things to remember when you take kids out into the countryside?Fredrik: Nature is one big playground. You just need to give yourself time, be patient and do things on the children’s terms. Be prepared to take extra breaks and take along something good to eat. Personally I think it’s easier being out in nature than in the city with my daughter. And much more fun!
“Det vilda Göteborg”
will also be published as a book.

Take a deep breath of fresh sea air. The coast and islands around Gothenburg are a unique setting where the craggy shore meets leafy nature, dotted with fishing com-munities and opportunities to sample gourmet cuisine.
The islands of the archipelago are close enough to visit for the day, but still far enough away to have a totally different tempo to the city. The southern half of the archipelago is car-free. The only traffic you will see are flatbed mopeds, bikes and the occasional wheelbarrow. This is a relaxing setting and the frequent ferry service from Saltholmen makes it easy to get around. You can get to the north-ern archipelago by car or bus, and explore a mix of large and small islands. Several of the islands are linked by bridges after you take the ferry from Lilla Varholmen to Hönö.
TIP! You can find a map of the islands at the back of this guide.!

Spread out a picnic in a green oasis on a hot summer day or paddle around a tranquil island just a stone’s throw from the city centre. Nature is always around the corner – whether you are looking for adventurous activities or peace and quiet.
You don’t need to hunt for long to find your own place in the sun. There are 2,700 hectares of green space here, which means that every in-habitant has no less than 175 square metres to enjoy. Parks and gardens are a natural part of the urban landscape, together with the canals and the harbour – and our closeness to the sea.

39
Enjoy world-class fish and shellfish at Michelin-starred restaurants that use the finest locally grown produce. It’s no wonder that food lovers feel right at home in Gothenburg.
The west coast location, close to the cold waters of the North Sea, makes Gothenburg a paradise for connoisseurs of fish and shellfish. Access to locally grown produce makes West Sweden one of the most appealing culinary destinations in northern Europe. The choice for dining ranges from street food, through trendy bistros and family favourites to Michelin-starred restaurants. And don’t forget to visit the Feskekôrka fish market hall or the Market Hall (Saluhallen) at Kungstorget. Hit the town and discover prize-winning chefs, fun concepts, modern Asian dishes and vegetarian restaur-ants that will amaze you.

ECO GOURMET
Everyone is talking about green gastronomy and there is no shortage of choice if you want to eat organic local produce that tastes great. Folk, the restaurant at Folkteatern theatre, is one of the hottest in the city and a must for anyone who likes to combine veget-arian dishes with organic wines. In summer 2014, Liseberg amusement park opened its first completely vegetarian restaurant, The Green Room, and on the roof of the Gothia Towers hotel they keep bees and grow their own vegetables for the Upper House Dining restaurant in the middle tower of the hotel. Three af-fordable favourites among the vegetarian restaurants in Gothenburg are Bar Kino, Jonsborg street kitchen and the Indian restaurant Thali.
ASIAN AND FUSION
Restaurants such as Made in China, Dubbel Dubbel, Hoze and the traditional Canton House serve up dishes that will make you forget everything you thought you knew about Asian food culture. At Vrå, Frida Ronge serves up a unique combination of Scandinavian ingredients and Japanese flavours, while at Toso, in Götaplatsen, celebrity chef Stefan Karlsson takes you on a culinary journey that is out of the ordinary. True fusion fans are recommended to visit Komex Eatery Market, where Mexican and Korean food cultures come face to face and start partying on your plate.
AWARD-WINNING
Gothenburg’s chefs and restaurateurs have been showered with prizes and awards. In 2015, the prestigious White Guide chose Koka restaurant as its Rising Star of the year; Thörnströms kök was voted Best Beer Experience; Upper House Dining was named Coffee Experience of the Year; and the innovative Hoze sushi restaurant took home the Merroir Award for excellence in seafood cuisine. At the Restaurant Gala in November 2015, Leif Mannerström’s Kometen restaurant was voted Classic of the Year.
Ulf Johansson, whose restaurant 28+ celebrates its 30th anniversary and has received a Michelin star every year for a quarter of a century, was also recognised as Restaurateur of the Year.
STREET FOOD AND HAMBURGERS
Gothenburg has a rolling army of food trucks serving everything from American pulled pork to ceviche from Peru. On Magasinsgatan you can also find traditional herring served street-style at Strömmings luckan. It’s fast, simple and incredibly tasty. If you love hamburg-ers you won’t go hungry for long. Eateries such as The Barn, Burgersson and the Butcher’s Market keep the American flag flying high.
FAMILY EATING
If you have young children it can sometimes be good to go to a restaurant where you know that even the little ones will feel at home. Köttbullekällaren (Cafe du Nord) serves meatballs and other classic dishes that will appeal to most palates. At Moon Thai Kitchen you can eat tasty Thailand dishes in a setting that is best described as a cross between tree house, beach hut and jungle, and at Gothenburg City Library there is a good refreshment room that has high chairs and a microwave oven.
DINING WITH A RIVER VIEW
Make the views and setting part of your dining ex-perience. From the 12th floor of the Hotel Riverton you get a spectacular view over the harbour mouth, and in the sky bar you can enjoy a drink and a bite to eat from the Asian-inspired menu. River Café in Norra älvstranden, Långedrags värdshus and the Göteborg Opera restaurant are three other favourites with fine waterside locations.

FEEL THE VIBE

Night may be falling, but the day is far from over. Nightlife in Gothenburg takes different forms in different parts of the city – around Järntorget
square there is an alternative night scene centering on culture and beer hangouts, while the main boulevard, Avenyn, is lined with large clubs and
the inner city offers a welcome mix of bars and good dance floors.
AROUND JÄRNTORGET SQUAREAndra Långgatan is dotted with pubs and forms the hub of the alternative night scene, which is often more relaxed and easier on the pocket. You’ll find a selection of pubs and indie bars along this street, such as The Rover and Café Publik. Just a stone’s throw from here, in the basement of Hagabion cinema, is Bar Kino, which in summer has the friendliest terrace bar in the district. On Första Långgatan street is Haket, an LGBT-friendly favourite among fans of beer and partying, and on Tredje Långgatan we recommend a visit to Auktionsverket, a collection of restaurants in one of the finest buildings in the neighbourhood. When you just have to dance, Pustervik in Järntorget square is the perfect choice, where you can often see famous and not-so-famous indie celebrities on stage.haketpub.setherover.sepustervik.nu cafepublik.blogspot.se
WITHIN THE MOAT (VALLGRAVEN)The central area within the Moat (Vallgraven) is marked out by the restaurant/pub/club Barabicu at one end, the jazz club Nefertiti, which also has one of the best dance floors in the city, at the other end, and by the Göteborg Opera down by the harbour. In between there are plenty of bars to choose from, and Magasinsgatan street and Kungstorget square are both good locations to keep in mind. In the heart of the city you can also find Sweden’s oldest gay bar, Gretas, as well as Beebar, which offers a relaxed bar atmosphere, food and a nightclub. barabicu.se nefertiti.se opera.se beebar.se/goteborg
VASASTANAt one end of Vasagatan is the School of Design and Crafts, and at the other is the School of Business, Economics and Law, and one of the University of Gothenburg’s campuses. So it comes as no surprise that this street has many popular venues that cater to students celebrating exam successes. Jazzhuset, in the heart of Vasastan, has been voted one of pop history’s most important sites and has been a magnet for pop fans and indie lovers for decades. Closer to the main boulevard, Avenyn, is Yaki-Da, which serves up star DJs, live music, dance and food over several floors.jazzhuset.se yaki-da.se
THE MAIN BOULEVARD, AVENYNThe main boulevard stretches from Stora Teatern theatre to Götaplatsen square and has a mix of nightclubs and restaurants as well as Gothenburg City Theatre and Gothenburg Concert Hall.Locatelli, Push and Park Lane are all popular clubs along Avenyn, and for the last ten years the latter has also hosted a popular mixed gay club on the last Friday of each month – Club Queer.parklane.se loactelligoteborg.se push.se clubqueer.se
