By FRED FARLEYH1 Unlimited Historian

Unlimited hydroplane racing lost one of its most versatile participants on May 21. Fred Leland of Kirkland, Wash., died after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 74.

Throughout his long career, Leland made his presence felt as an owner, a driver, a designer, and a builder. As an owner, he won 17 Unlimited races including the 1999 Indiana Governor’s Cup at Madison with Chip Hanauer as driver.

F r e d w a s a fixture on the Pacific Northwest Limited Inboard circuit for many years. He made his Unlimited debut at the 1978 Seattle Seafair Regatta as the rookie driver of Bob Miller’s Miss B&L Plumbing.

At Seattle in 1983, Leland was driving an Ed Karelsen-designed hull named KISW Miss Rock. He won the Consolation Heat but was flipped out of the boat during the

Final Heat. Fred was not seriously injured but that was the end of his driving career.

As a designer, Leland experi-mented with a number of interesting concepts including a hull powered by a massive 2,500-cubic-inch Packard PT Boat engine of World War II vintage.

In 1992, Fred upgraded his pro-gram with a new hull, powered by a Lycoming turbine engine. With Nate Brown as driver, the craft was instantly competitive.

Some of the Unlimited sport’s most respected chauffeurs have taken a turn behind the wheel of a Fred Leland race boat at one time or another. In addition to Brown and Hanauer, Dave Villwock, Mark Evans, Mike Hanson, Scott Pierce, Terry Troxell, and Greg Hopp have all driven for Leland.

Leland recorded his first Unlim-ited victory at the 1994 Texaco Cup on Seattle’s Lake Washington with Villwock driving.

Fred’s most successful season as an owner was 1996 when his PICO American Dream and Villwock swept the competition, claimed six

victories, and won the National High Point Championship.

The 1997 season was another triumph. With Mark Evans at the wheel, PICO American Dream won four races in a row at the Tri-Cities, Kelowna, B.C., Seattle, and San Diego.

By far the most memorable moment of 1997 occurred at Seattle. After winning Heat 1B, Mark flipped upside-down in Heat 2A. Evans was uninjured and rebounded to win the Final Heat.

Never before in the history of Unlimited racing had a driver flipped a boat upside-down and come back to win the race, all on the same day.

In 1999, Fred caught the racing world by surprise when he lured Lee “Chip” Hanauer — the winningest living Unlimited driver at the time — out of self-imposed exile to work his particular magic for the Leland Unlimited team.

Chip hadn’t driven a U-boat in three years. Hanauer, nevertheless, got back into the spirit of things rather quickly, piloting Miss Pico into the winner’s circle at his debut race in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.,

before also winning at Madison and Detroit.

The 1999 Madison race saw Hanauer leading into the first turn of the final heat. The race was stopped moments later when archrival Villwock and Miss Bud-weiser became airborne and flipped. Villwock was uninjured but, having caused the stoppage, was ineligible for the re-start, which was won by Miss Pico at 133.351 mph, compared to 132.297 for second-place Mitch Evans and Appian Jeronimo.

The 1999 Detroit race was like-wise noteworthy. This one was for the APB Gold Cup — the ultimate prize — that Leland had won once before in 1996.

The 1999 Gold Cup is perhaps Fred Leland’s finest hour as a hydro-plane racer.

The boat had sustained damage when it scraped a sponson on a freeway overpass while en route to the race site.

Miss Pico lost a whole day of valuable testing time while the crew, headed by crew chief Ken Dryden, hurried repairs. On Friday, a stiff breeze cursed the Detroit River with

white caps and waves and another test day was lost.

The repaired Miss Pico didn’t make it into the water until race day morning. But the Leland team and Hanauer nevertheless demonstrated their championship mettle and pulled off a classic victory in the race of races.

Fred built no fewer than eight turbine-powered Unlimited hulls between 1992 and 2000. But he never gave up on internal com-bustion engines for Unlimiteds — including automotive engines. After several years of development, Leland hoped to water test just such a craft in 2012.

The last appearance in competition of a Fred Leland-owned hydroplane occurred at the 2011 Oryx Cup/UIM World Championship in Doha, Qatar, on the Persian Gulf. The team placed third overall with Hopp as driver.

Leland did not want the team that he founded to die with him so prior to his death, he made arrangements for the Kirkland-based Leland Unlimited organization to continue racing with Hopp as representative owner.

Key to Fred Leland’s boat racing success was versatility

Is the Spark a category killer? Well, it has killer looks and 10 standard airbags.

The Viper gets more electronics, launch control, but the same brutal engine.

Ford is devoted to electrification and will

likely be a real option for Prius shoppers.

The BRZ is a car-bon copy of the Scion

FR-S, but both cars carry a Subaru engine down low to

drop the center of gravity.

The ILX might carry Honda Civic DNA, but is there really anything wrong with that?

The ATS is intended to go head-to-head with Europe’s better sporty compacts.

For a decade, the Altima has been one of those category-defining models.

The new Dart has its roots heavily entrenched in Italian architecture.

Automobile theft is no laughing matter. It leaves people without a means of transportation, costs the public more money in insurance payments and taxes and can give anyone the feeling of being personally violated.

The FBI estimates that around one million motor vehicles are stolen in the United States each year. The Insurance Bureau of Canada says that a car is stolen every three and a half minutes in Canada, an estimate that translates to approximately 420 cars per day. Auto theft costs everyone millions of dollars — and can even cost some their lives.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, the chances of a car being stolen are now significantly less than they were in 1989. That could be due to vehicle theft prevention systems that now come standard on many new cars.

While not all vehicle thefts and break-ins can be prevented, there are many devices individuals can employ to help reduce the risk of vehicle theft.

How to avoid becoming a vehicle theft statistic

• Immobilizing devices: There are several types of immobilizing devices avail-able to protect a car from theft. An immobilizing system works by preventing thieves from bypassing your ignition switch and hot-wiring your car. An immobilization device can involve a kill switch that needs to be turned on before the car will start and can be cleverly hidden. Most cars also come with specially encoded smart keys that are required to start the car. The key is unique to the make, model and VIN number of the car.

• Car alarms: Car alarms work as a deterrent to theft, but they do not always prevent theft. The alarm sounds when the vehicle is tampered with or the door is opened, but many people have become desensitized to car alarms because of the frequency of “false alarms” from car owners setting the alarms off themselves. Therefore, they may no longer be as effective as they once were. In addition, many thieves can disarm an alarm in a matter of seconds.

• Hood and tire locks: Locks that are installed on dif-ferent parts of the car or truck can also deter thieves.

A hood lock stops a poten-tial thief from getting under the hood and gaining access to the engine and wiring. Tire locks are special devices that require a unique tool to remove the tire. This can help prevent tire theft and may give thieves pause as to what other anti-theft devices are on the car.

• Tracking devices: There are devices, like Lojack, that are designed to pinpoint the position of a car. It uses FM radio frequencies to help police recover the car. Some people also purchase after-market GPS devices that will show their vehicle’s location on a computer or smartphone.

• OnStar: This system was originally designed to be a crash-notification system, but it now offers other helpful services. Individuals can use OnStar for directions, to unlock their vehicles and now to slow down their cars and trucks if they have been stolen.

•There are other steps to take to prevent

vehicle thefts and break-ins.• Whenever possible, park in well-illuminated areas.• Never leave your car unlocked.• Keep valuables, including money, out of site in your car.• Be mindful of where you keep your car keys.• When parking in unfamiliar neighborhoods, park in public

pay-lots that have security present.• Give valet parkers your valet key, so they won’t have access

to a trunk or glove compartment.• Know your car alarm sound and be aware of it.

stomping moments, though the elder Pitino’s pounding was louder and more frequent by comparison. Richard Pitino actually seemed more like Billy Donovan — the Florida coach and former Pitino assistant with whom he spent two seasons on the Gators’ staff.

But still had his team’s atten-tion, showing his disapproval with a piercing stare similar to his dad.

Still, Pitino said he told his son, “You emulate Billy Donovan, every single thing he does. The way he coaches, his demeanor, everything about Billy Donovan. Billy Donovan and Peyton Siva are the two people in my lifetime that I not only coached special players but I coached two of the most special people.”

And like dad, the son obvi-ously knew a little something about defense and his choice for the Panthers was a 2-3 zone. Louisville had no problems breaking it, as Smith opened with a 3-pointer and Blacks-hear and Zack Price got shots inside.

In fact, the Cardinals got more inside chances than they

probably expected that soon, making seven of their first 12 inside the arc. That offset Louisville’s 3-of-10 start from the perimeter, although Smith and Siva raised the statistics some by hitting 3-pointers 21 seconds apart.

That provided the Cardinals some breathing room with a 31-19 lead that was helped by their man-to-man defense. After allowing the Panthers to start off 7 of 14 from the field through 10 minutes Louisville clamped down and held FIU to 5-of-18 shooting for the rest of the first half.

Blackshear meanwhile stayed in a groove and finished off a 15-point first half by scoring Louisville’s final 10 points including two 3-pointers. He

had three of the Cardinals’ seven 3s in the first 20 minutes, helping them shoot 47 percent in building a 41-27 lead.

“I’m feeling more comfort-able out there on the floor,” Blackshear said. “I was getting to the basket a few times and being more active.”

Louisville’s 12-3 run to open the second half made it 51-27, and FIU didn’t score its first basket until the 13:40 mark.

When it was over both teams huddled together for a team picture, another fitting moment considering the common bond between them.

“It was fun,” Blackshear said. “Richard was like the funnest guy to be around last year. We miss him.”

“What I’m the happiest about is that Lexi really grew into a leader. She was the leader on the floor and off the floor,” Johnson said. “She was very vocal, she’s a very hard worker and she leads by example. I know the younger girls, even the eighth graders coming in, looked up to her this past season.”

Means said that she feels like she needs to work on getting better in all facets of the game and is ready for whatever role Union has for her. Amshoff said Means will

get a chance to step right in and play.

“What I’ve always told my players is that they don’t have any time to be freshmen. They have to hit the floor right away,” Amshoff said. “I think Lexi has the ability to come in and contribute. That’s one of the reasons why I liked her.”

Means is just the latest in a line of recent Southwestern volleyball players to get a chance to play at the next level — joining Devin Clark (Hanover), Camille Cline (Florida College) and Danielle Clark (Manchester) in recent years.

Johnson noted that the players’ individual success is directly tied to the program’s team success.

“I’ve been here nine years and those first two years we had losing records as we were rebuilding the program but now we’ve had seven-straight winning seasons, three-straight ORVC titles, a sectional title and four girls playing at the college level,” Johnson said. “I think it says a lot about this program and about the players in it. It really comes down to them. All of the credit goes to these girls.”

like the team that had been No. 1 all season — until the loss.

Every day was just a battle, whether we came in the first time or the second, we battled hard every time,” said senior forward Derek Elston, who returned to the lineup after missing the first 10 games because of knee surgery. “That was something we had to do, we had to get that grip back and tonight we did.”

They did it emphatically and with everyone playing a role.

Sheehey scored 16 points off the bench. Victor Oladipo had 14 points, five assists and five rebounds. Remy Abell finished with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists. Yogi Ferrell had eight points, nine assists and four rebounds, and Jordan Hulls added eight points and five assists.

With numbers like that, even Crean found little to critique.

“Whenever you lose, I think It creates a different level of urgency with your team and it did,” Crean said. “We dealt with a multitude of things this week, whether it be an injury, whether it be an illness or whatever. I thought our guys did an excellent job. I thought we moved the ball extremely

well. I thought we kept the pace.”

If the Hoosiers play like this, they’ll be even tougher to beat — as Mount St. Mary’s discovered.

That’s about the only thing Indiana didn’t accomplish in winning its 28th straight home game against a non-conference team.

The Hoosiers used an 8-0 run to take a 26-17 lead midway through the first half, and when the Mountaineers got within

30-26, Indiana finally had enough.

Oladipo’s steal led to a layup by Ferrell, Zeller posted up for a short jumper and Oladipo knocked down a 3 to extend the lead to 37-26. Indiana closed the half with two free throws and a layup from Sheehey and Watford’s 3 on a fast break to make it 46-29.

The Hoosiers opened the second half with a dunk from Zeller that sent Indiana on an 18-2 run to make it 64-31.

BLOOMINGTON (AP) — Indiana backup guard Maurice Creek is out again.

The Hoosiers (10-1) said Wednesday that Creek will be out indefinitely after sustaining an undisclosed injury to his right foot injury during Sunday’s practice.

Creek missed half of his freshman season with a dislocated left kneecap, half of his second season with a stress fracture in his right kneecap and all of last season after slipping on the stairs and tearing the Achilles tendon in his left leg. He redshirted last year.

Coach Tom Crean says he’s hoping the latest injury is only a temporary setback. Creek is averaging 3.0 points and 1.6 rebounds this season.

No. 6 Indiana also has added walk-on Paul Bayt of Carmel, to the roster. He spent the first semester at Manhattan Col-lege.

Hanover’s women lost to Redlands (Calif.) 90-74 in the second game of the Panthers’ pre-holiday basketball swing through Southern California Wednesday in Redlands.

Alicia Hopkins hit a pair of shots from outside as Redlands were clinging to an 8-7 lead in the opening five minutes. How-everm the Bulldogs — behind four 3-pointers — went on a 20-5 run over a five-minute span to power to a 28-12 lead midway through the first period.

Redlands eventually expand-ed the cushion to 21 points (49-28) in the final minute of the half and led 49-30 at the break.

Courtney Prater opened the second period with three straight buckets and Caitlin Bischoff later added three from outside, including two 3-point-ers, as Hanover charged back to within 67-55 with 10 minutes left in the game.

The Panthers then went cold from the field during a key seven-minute stretch late in the second half when Hanover hit just one field goal while relying on nine free throws to remain in contact.

Hanover pulled within 73-62 after a Bischoff free throw with 6:37 to go, but Redlands countered with an 8-2 run in the following three minutes to build an 81-64 advantage to lock up the win.

Prater posted game highs with 25 points and 13 rebounds to lead Hanover. Elyse Weddle had 13 points and Hopkins added 10.

Allison Wong scored 20 points to lead four Redlands players in double figures. Brit-tany Oster added 17 points and nine boards for the Bulldogs (7-3).

Hanover was 25-of-75 from the floor (33.3 percent) and converted 19-of-23 free throws (86.2 percent).

The Panthers had a 49-38

advantage on the glass, includ-ing 23 offensive rebounds. Stephanie Pahren pulled down a season-high nine boards to support the effort.

Hanover, now 6-3, stays on the road to play Centre (Ky.) College in the Huntingdon (Ala.) Tournament starting Dec. 28.
