Joe Harawira (Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Te Rangi, Ngāti Awa)
Māori have grown up with Storytelling
Handed down stories have given us an insight into our ancestors world and their time
Our stories are regarded as myth/s
A Māori world view does not fit this construct of myth/s
Joe refers to storytelling as TRUTHS, my truths, your truths and our truths.

Mātauranga Māori: Ranga Framework
The Ranga Framework explores the relationship between mātauranga-a-iwi (Māori identity), mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) and kaupapa Māori theory.
The Ranga Framework has 4 components
The first component is Non – Māori knowledge (Western Knowledge)
The second component is Kaupapa Māori theory (Knowledge that validates a Māori World view)
The third component is Mātauranga Māori, the generic forms of Māori knowledge, principles and values (Public Māori, Private Tūhoe)
The last component is a Iwi knowledge world view, incorporated in the rohe and landscape (Traditional Indigenous Knowledge, at a local level)
In the Ranga Framework, each tribe has its own version of knowledge – mātauranga-a-iwi. The interaction of each tribe with its local environment shapes its language, expressions and epistemology.
The Ranga framework explains the relationships that exist between the three concepts Mātauranga Māori, Mātauranga-a-iwi and kaupapa Māori theory and ‘generic knowledge’

Ranga Framework

Mātauranga Māori - Learning styles
Rangatahi - Youth Rangahau –Research Mātauranga – Knowledge Rangatira – Leader or Chief
The aim of the Ranga model is to move learners to the next stage of learning
By exposing the Rangatahi or Māori to
different forms of knowledge we can expand their world view.
As the rangatahi go through the different stages of the Ranga Framework , their learning stops becoming one-dimensional and becomes a powerful learning tool and which embraces Māori and Tribal concepts
Tribal knowledge has become a vital starting point for Māori Learners to engage with other forms of knowledge.
