    1. 'Guernica' by Pablo Picasso

Guernica is a painting by Pablo Picasso. The painting was created after thebombing

of Guernica by German and Italian on 26 April 1937, during the Spanish Civil War.

Pablo very tactfully used only shades of white, black and grey in his painting, the

selection of colour according to me is to portray the suffering and mass damage and

loss of live that had occurred during the war. The painting depicts how the war did notonly inflict suffering in people but also the suffering of animals and innocent people.

According to me the most prominent elements of the picture the suffering depicted by

a mother at the loss of her child, the soldier holding a broken sword out of which there

is a beautiful flower to show a ray of hope, the dove that symbolises the peace that has

yet to come, the lantern in the hope of a better tomorrow, the door to depict escape

from one miseries and lastly how the bull and the horse are very skilfully blended

with each other to show unity. The painting is an image of war and love.

The painting is very beautiful but ugly at the same time. It shows the horrors of war

and how none are spared, nor innocent children, nor mighty soldiers, nor helpless

animals. Pablo Picasso painted Guernica in a very interesting manner incorporating all

the elements in a vague but clear picture, like the bull and the horse along with thepaper print on the body of the horse; this art was known as cubism.

    2. Picasso - Art Criticism

Picasso went through a lot of styles of painting throughout his life. He even

introduced new styles like cubism that were not known to artist. Picasso was one of

the greatest artists of modern times as his works were inspirational, he had something

about his painting that attracted all. Cubism is a three-dimensional view of somethinginto a flat area, along with overlapping and intertwining with the use of patterns and

colours so that the view from the front and the back of shapes and parts of the human

anatomy are the same. Picasso talent of painting was recognised by his art teacherfather. Picassos early works began with striking painting of ancient sculptures which

were followed by styles of realism and caricature. Then came the Blue period where

paintings were predominantly on outcasts, beggars, and prostitutes with the use of

blue palette. After which came the Red period where his subjects were circus people

painted in pinks and beiges, light blues, and roses. His work then took classical aura

more like the Greek art. After which he introduced cubism. His art was very much

influenced by his life as every style that he adapted was from a place he had recently

visited like after he visited Holland in 1905 he took up Greek style painting of maleand female figures. His art dominantly expressed his feelings after the war where he

would paint gloomy paintings in semi-abstract styles, many depicting shattered and

    horrifying images.

    4. Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter born in 6th

July 1907 who was most famous forher self-portraits. Her work was inspired by theMexican andAmerindian cultural.

She was studying medicine but after a fatal accident chose begin her painting career. She had a great instinct in her art and painted things that were never dared toput out in the open in those days onto a canvas.

The Tree of hope painting is one of the many self-potraits painted by Frida

Kahlo. In this paining it shows 2 sides of her, one being the girl lying on her back

with scars on her which depicts how much she was in pain and suffering after the fatal

accident that she had. The other girl was calm and in all her beauty sitting on a chair

with a tear on her right cheek which depicts that she showed a strong front even when

she was unable to bare it. The atmosphere around is also of a barren desert with no

one in sight which shows how the emptiness of her life. In the painting the lady sittingdown hold a back brace that shows that she had no support i.e. because her back was

injured in the accident as well as she had no one to support her in life, while on the

other hand she hold a flag which says ray of hope in Spanish which clearly shows

that in spite of all the hardships in life she never lost hope.
