Ting tar tid i slike søknadsprosesser. Jeg kan ikke fa understreket nok hvorviktig det er a starte tidlig i planleggingen av alt du gjør.

Veien til Stanford University starter her! Dette dokumentet har til hensikta gi deg som har et ønske om a utveksle til Stanford University fra NTNUen kjapp oversikt over søknadsprossedyre og fremgangsmate. 1. Start senest august aret før du skal utveksle med a begynne planleggingen.

3. Stanford University er dyrt. Skolepenger for 2016/2017 var pa 47 331USD. Det holder ikke med støtte fra Lanekassen, sa jeg søkte, og fikkstøtte, fra disse to:

4. Bestill og ta TOEFL test sa tidlig som mulig: http://www.studenttests.no/TOEFL/Norge/. Kravet er 100 av 120 poeng. Dette er ikke spesieltvanskelig, men vær forberedt pa formatet: https://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/prepare/. Du trenger ikke ta GRE-test.

5. Fa et godt forhold til en handfull av professorene dine, da du trenger godereferansebrev til søknaden. Har disse et forhold til Stanford University erdet kjempebra!

6. Søknadsfristen er 1. juni, men søk i februar/mars, slik at du vet tidlig omdu kommer inn eller ikke. Jeg fikk svar to uker etter jeg sendte søknadeni posten, 12. mars 2016.

4 Tips til søknaden

1. Kom i kontakt med ”Graduate admissions” ved Stanford slik at de kansende deg ett nytt søknadsskjema oppdatert for ditt ar som er likt ”Non-matriculated Status Application 15-16.pdf” filen vedlagt. Hvem du skalkontakte finner du under ”Graduate admissions”: https://registrar.

stanford.edu/staff/registrars-office-directory. Min kontaktper-son var Sue Emory, emory@stanford.edu. Hun har vært veldig hjelpsom.

2. Skriv første utkast til ”Statement of purpose” i juleferien aret før utvek-sling. Mellom ribba og julegrøten er et perfekt tidsrom til a gjøre dette.Husk a skryt av deg selv! Fa de beste du kjenner i engelsk til a lese,kommentere og gjøre endringer pa den.

3. Søknadsavgiften pa 125 USD ma være vedlagt som en sjekk, noe som erproblematisk for nordmenn da ingen norske banker skriver ut dette lenger.Fa deg en amerikansk venn eller liknende som kan skrive ut en sjekk for degog sa betaler du den personen i stedet. Sjekken skal vedlegges søknaden.

5 Har du kommet inn?

1. Søk lanekasse sa tidlig som mulig, slik at du far HELFO forsikringsbevism.m. i god tid.

2. Fiks visum. Jeg fikk fikset dette gjennom the Fulbright Foundation.

3. Husk a søke om forsikringsfritak da du er godt nok dekket gjennom HELFO,ANSA og eventuelle andre her hjemme. Dette er ca. 5000 USD spart.https://vaden.stanford.edu/sites/default/files/insurance-coverage-certification.

1. Hvilket studiear dro du pa utveksling fra NTNU? 4. aret ved NTNU, ogtok fag pa graduate niva pa Stanford.

2. Er det mulig a ta fag fra flere institutter? I utgangspunktet ikke, men deter nok mulig hvis du spør pent der borte. Jeg har ikke prøvd dette. De ermindre strenge i praksis enn pa papiret er min generelle erfaring.

3. Hva er det jeg studerer? Hjemme i Norge studerer jeg Petroleum, mensder borte studerte jeg ved Energy Resources Engineering Department.

4. Jeg studerer Indøk og har hørt at de ikke tar inn utvekslingsstudenterpa Stanford, er dette sant? Nei, de har en Indøk-ekvivalent som heterManagement Science and Engineering: https://msande.stanford.edu/.

5. Hva er snittet for a komme inn? Minimum B.

6. Er det vanskelig a fa meldt seg opp i fag pa Stanford? Ja! Jeg har ikkehatt noe problem med a melde meg opp i noen fag. I forhold til andreskoler i USA er inntrykket mitt at det er mye enklere.

7. Hvor mye jobb er det i forhold til NTNU? Det kommer an pa fagene, mengenerelt er det nok mer arbeidsmengde totalt sett, men jevnere fordeltover kvartalet. Vanskelighetsgraden er nok ikke større enn NTNU, baremer arbeid.

8. Trives du? Trives veldig bra! Opplever masse forskjellig i tillegg til skole.Silicon Valley er en boble med masse penger, lukseriøse fester og interes-sante og ambisiøse personligheter. Har gleden av a bo i samme nabolagsom Mark Zuckerberg m.m.. Men vær forberedt pa mye arbeid.

9. Godtar de IELTS som erstatning for TOEFL? Nei, det tviler jeg pa.

10. Hvordan bor du der? Bor o↵-campus. Er mulig a søke pa on-campushousing for ”Non-matriculated” students fom. vinter kvartalet.

11. Hvordan er det med units i forhold til studiepoeng pa NTNU? Du mata 36 units der borte pa graduate niva, og kan ta disse pa hvilken matedu vil. F.eks. kan du ta 12 units alle kvartalene eller 16-10-10 som jeggjør - da sparer du 100 000-150 000 kroner. Det er veldig forskjellig hvortidkrevende fagene er der borte, og det er akkurat som pa NTNU at antallstudiepoeng ikke nødvendigvis er korrelert med arbeidsmengde. Du harnoen fag som kan ta 50 timer i uka, mens andre kan det være mye mindrearbeid med. Nar det gjelder om de dekker pensum hjemme vil det avhengeav hvilke fag du tar, og du ma sende inn en tentativ fagplan til NTNUi midten av februar hvor du matcher fagene som er obligatorisk i Norgemed de som er mest like i USA. Min erfaring er at veilederne i Norge errunde i kantene nar det gjelder hva som blir godkjent fra Stanford og jeg

har allerede endret fagplanen min 3 ganger uten noe problem. Vil anbefaledeg a la de vanskligste fagene være de som er relevante for studieretningendin, mens de ”k-emnene” kan være noen lettere fag - ellers er det umuliga ta 16 units pa et semester. Det kan du endre nar du kommer dit og farfølelsen av hvor vanskelig fagene er der osv - for du kan bytte masse fag ibegynnelsen av kvartalet.

Admission for Graduate Nonmatriculated (Non-Degree) Student Status

GENERAL POLICY Applicants who hold a U.S. bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from colleges and universities of recognized standing are eligible to be considered for admission to nonmatriculated graduate status in the University. Nonmatriculated graduate student status is granted to students of demonstrated ability who are not seeking advanced degrees from Stanford University but who would benefit from course work at Stanford for a variety of reasons. Applicants may apply to take classes in only one program or department. Applications must be approved by the department in which the applicant wishes to take courses. A 3.0 or ‘B’ grade average in previous studies is required. This status may be granted for a given academic year or a part thereof. It is important to note, however, that permission to enroll in any specific class is not guaranteed in the approval process. Nonmatriculated students who later apply for admission to a degree program must meet the standard admission requirements for graduate study and should not anticipate special priority because of work completed as a nonmatriculated student.

A nonmatriculated student who leaves the University for one or more quarters and wants to return to Stanford in nonmatriculated status will have to complete the current application forms, pay the current application fee, submit transcripts from colleges and universities attended since leaving Stanford and submit one additional letter of recommendation.

Nonmatriculated status is a privilege and not a right; the nonmatriculated status may be revoked at the University's discretion (and after consideration of such factors as the University considers relevant in the particular case) at the end of any quarter of enrollment

ACADEMIC POLICY The nonmatriculated student will obtain academic credit for courses satisfactorily completed and may obtain an official transcript. Such a student is eligible to use University facilities and services (however, in certain instances, in a lower priority category.) In classes of limited enrollment, students in degree programs have priority over nonmatriculated students. Directed Research or Directed Reading courses are not open to nonmatriculated students. Nonmatriculated students are not permitted to enroll in the following departments or programs: Computer Science, Documentary Film and Video, Economics, Electrical Engineering and graduate-level courses in Psychology. Neither the School of Medicine nor the Graduate School of Business accepts nonmatriculated students.

FINANCIAL AID No fellowships, assistantships, or institutionally-based Stanford loans are available for non-matriculated students.

FEES Nonmatriculated students will be charged the 8-10 unit graduate tuition rate per quarter. Students who take ANY courses in the School of Engineering are charged the graduate engineering 8-10 unit rate per quarter. Only individuals in the following categories may enroll on a unit basis (3 - 8 units):

x Spouses of members of the Academic Council x Full-time teachers in Bay Area educational institutions. x Stanford University staff employed half-time or more. NOTE: If the work to be undertaken is related to services

rendered to the University and will involve time off from work, a supervisor’s endorsement is necessary.

HOUSING Matriculated students in degree programs have first priority for University housing facilities. Nonmatriculated students may apply for housing on the first day of the quarter, but should not anticipate living on campus due to very limited availability.

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS The University requires a health procedure of all entering students. Please see the Vaden Health Center web site at http://vaden.stanford.edu/ for entrance medical requirements & health services fees.

ACADEMIC CALENDAR Stanford University operates on a four quarter system. Autumn, Winter and Spring quarters constitute the regular nine- month academic year. Summer Quarter studies give regular academic credit, but course offerings are limited.

Opening and closing dates of the quarters in 2016-17 are:

Nonmatriculated students may apply for one or more regular academic quarters of one academic year, Autumn through Spring. Individuals interested in nonmatriculated student status for the Summer Quarter should apply through the Summer Session Office and, if approved, will be permitted to attend as a summer visitor. APPLICATION DEADLINES The application review process involves a number of departments. The deadlines below have been established so that your application receives the attention it deserves.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Statement of Purpose: A detailed statement of your plans for nonmatriculated study at Stanford and how you expect to use this study in subsequent personal or career plans is required. State the quarter(s) you wish to attend.

List of Courses: List of the specific courses in the single department in which you wish to enroll.

Academic Credentials: One official transcript from each college or university attended for one academic year or more as a full-time student is required. Transcripts must be complete through the last date of attendance and must show any degrees awarded. Note: Stanford alumni are not required to submit a Stanford transcript.

Recommendations: Three letters of recommendation are expected from faculty or others qualified to evaluate your potential for non-matriculated graduate study. (Make copies of the attached recommendation form.) At least one letter should be from a faculty member at the last school you attended for full-time study (unless you have been out of school for more than five years). Letters of recommendation are handled in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (the Buckley Amendment). Applicants are offered the opportunity to waive their right of access to recommendations.

Test Scores: Applicants whose first language is not English must submit TOEFL scores. TOEFL may be waived by Graduate Admissions for applicants who have recently studied for at least one year in an English-speaking country. A recent TOEFL score of 100 on the internet-based test, 253 on the computer-based test, or 600 on the paper-based test is required. Scores must be reported directly to Stanford from the Educational Testing Service. The Stanford score recipient number is 4704.

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS applying for admission as nonmatriculated students are subject to the same requirements as applicants for admission to degree programs in respect to 1) the academic credentials to be submitted, 2) adequacy of financial support, and 3) English proficiency qualifications. International students who hold an F-1 or J-1 student visa must register for a minimum of 8 units per quarter.

APPLICATION FEE: The application fee is $125.00. Acceptable forms of payment are by check or money order made out to Stanford University. The fee is non-refundable and must accompany the application.

Application materials, once submitted as part of your application, become the property of Stanford University. Materials will not be returned and copies will not be provided for applicants or released to other institutions. Keep a copy for your records.
