…are the words that describe a
noun
Adjectives

In English they come
in all shapes
and sizes

2 easily distinguishable groups
But in Japanese they can be put into
![Page 5: I and na_adjectives in Japanese](https://reader038.vdocuments.pub/reader038/viewer/2022110118/5551ee30b4c905f56f8b4efc/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Try dividing these into 2 groups
へん
じょうず
たのしい
おいしい
おもしろい
げんき
やさしい
むずかしい
まずい
へた
しんせつしずか

Remember…
Japanese is a phonetic language

Hopefully your list ended up something like this …
へん
じょうず
たのしい
おいしい
おもしろい
げんきやさしい
むずかしい
まずい
へた
しんせつ
しずか

I-adjectives
These are adjectives that end in hiragana "i"
The "i" serves as a link to the noun...
![Page 10: I and na_adjectives in Japanese](https://reader038.vdocuments.pub/reader038/viewer/2022110118/5551ee30b4c905f56f8b4efc/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
It links the adjective to the
word it describes
The 'i' at the end is what links
the adjective
to the noun
い

However, there are a couple of exceptions...
![Page 12: I and na_adjectives in Japanese](https://reader038.vdocuments.pub/reader038/viewer/2022110118/5551ee30b4c905f56f8b4efc/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
I-adjectives
A few adjectives that end in "i" are
not i-adjectives
We need to learn these as
we come across them
![Page 13: I and na_adjectives in Japanese](https://reader038.vdocuments.pub/reader038/viewer/2022110118/5551ee30b4c905f56f8b4efc/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Here are the ones we need to know
Remember - these are Na-adjectives
![Page 14: I and na_adjectives in Japanese](https://reader038.vdocuments.pub/reader038/viewer/2022110118/5551ee30b4c905f56f8b4efc/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Na-adjectivesMost of these do not end
in "i"
Therefore they need something to link it to the noun...
No guessing why they're called "na" adjectives!

![Page 16: I and na_adjectives in Japanese](https://reader038.vdocuments.pub/reader038/viewer/2022110118/5551ee30b4c905f56f8b4efc/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
![Page 17: I and na_adjectives in Japanese](https://reader038.vdocuments.pub/reader038/viewer/2022110118/5551ee30b4c905f56f8b4efc/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
But...
NO 'na' before 'desu'
