Decryption TowerCollaborative project with Ben Sullivan. Our tower was designed for a 3D software company that would serve as offi ce space, artist space with fabrica-tion labs, and numerous public spaces. We wanted to engage the public from the ground up by dividing the ground plane by paths and twisting the form up. The resulting fl oor shape creates separate areas for different uses. The tops of the towers were pushed down to create numerous outdoor areas for the users.

White Water Center GridshellStudio group project in collaboration with the White Water Center (WWC).The COA was given an opportunity to take part in a national “Thinking While Doing” gridshell grant, partner with engineering company Blackwell. Our scheme arose from numerous styles of form fi nding, as well as research per-taining to gridshell technology and hands-on testing. Currently in construction.

My project was based on the defi nition of Interstice, which I saw as the cir-culation space between the multiple programs within the center. I wanted to excite the main entrance’s lobby by adding a parametric roof structure that responded to the light available to the site. To add to the appeal of the center, I designed a twisting steel column system that becomes fl ush with the fl oor and eventually fades into the side of the theater and up the side.

Collaborative project with Neil Edwards. The Ashville mountain brewery is a place of relaxation and learning. Its desired program takes in master brewers from all over to come experiment and learn about new brewing techniques. The public would be involved throughout the process acting as the audience to the brewers who are positioned within frames, turning a 3D process into a 2D set of steps.

Design Build: UNCC SOA wallCollaborative project. This project was given to our Design Build elective class by our SOA Director. He wanted a wall to fi lter out a series of dumpsters located beside the back entrance to our SOA. Everything was designed and fabricated by our class, through multiple meeting regarding the details and aesthetic the wall will bring to people as they enter or exit the SOA.

Furniture Assembly InstallationInstructor: Chris Beorkrem

METHOD:
In pairs of two, the class designed furniture pieces using the “forked method of curving plywood. There were no limitations to the design, but it was prompted to be durable and have a consistent method for construction. The furniture pieces went through a quick but rigorous development process, using scaled components as a method for quickly testing lots of methods for connection andassembly. The groups created two full-scale iterations of thepiece, one as a mockup to learn about how it works, the second as final design proposal. The final designs were reviewed, after which, one design was selected as a finalcomponent for a large- scale intervention to manufactureand install in Storrs Hall.
GOALS OF THE FURNITURE:
- Consider how the joinery can be disassembled- How the joinery can be replicated to assemble multiple versions of the piece into a larger assembly- MINIMIZE the amount of material which is consumed in its production- MINIMIZE the amount of machine time that is used tomanufacture the piece- MINIMIZE the amount of assembly time required to assemble the piece

Personal project in preparation for a future furniture installation within the SOA. My design investigates the translation from Grasshopper plug-ins Kangaroo and Weaverbird into the physical realm. The code takes in an ordinary surface, rebuilds the surface with a series of springs in the U V directions, and applies a specifi ed force of gravity onto the surface. The springs react to the distance from the ancor points as well as the factor of gravity.

Structures course fi nal project. The objective was to investigate the relationship between metal, wood, and concrete while creating an aesthetic sculpture infl uenced by an architect and artist. My shadow box was infl uenced by Antoni Gaudí & Rafael Araujo. The box is composed of 7 bays that are segments of a sea shell. I chose to use threaded rod as the perimeter so that the string has something to catch onto, the rod also allowed me to fabricate the connecting joints using hollow aluminum. At fi rst the frames are unsteady and want to break easily, but thanks to the cross bracing from the woven patterns the frames are sturdy. The bays were then placed through a sheet of rockite and plywood where the ends of the rods are bolted down and hidden by a series of wood pieces acting as the base.
