Dear Friends, What an exciting year of changes it has been here at Home of the Sparrow! A new CEO, a new venue for Jazz on the Main Line and, of course, so many new wonderful friends who have joined us in our mission to change the lives of women and children in our community.

Thanks to your support, we were able to help nearly 550 women and children through our programs this year. Our amazing team works extremely hard every day to prevent and end homelessness in Chester County. But, unfortunately, the numbers of those in need are increasing at an alarming rate. It’s difficult to grasp that, in our beautiful county, nearly 600 people are homeless on any given night.

But it’s the reality that we face every day. And, while we are proud of our accomplishments, we are constantly innovating our programming so that we can better address this crisis.

This year, not only did we help more women and children than ever before, we also implemented new programming so that we could be more effective and responsive to our most at-risk neighbors, most specifically justice-involved women re-entering the community. Through partnerships and volunteers we are helping children access the resources and knowledge they need to go on to college. And, because of our generous supporters, more women and children are remaining housed and creating new futures for themselves.

Within this annual impact report, you will find exciting details about these programs. But, more importantly, you will find stories of the women and children we have had the great fortune to walk alongside as they faced the greatest struggles of their lives. As you read about them, please remember that their successes are made possible by our generous friends, partners and donors – they are made possible by you.

So, again, thank you so much for all that you do for Home of the Sparrow. We truly couldn’t do it without you.

Sincerely, Michelle E. Venema Barbara Dougherty Chief Operating Officer Board President

FROM HOUSING INSECURE TO HOMEOWNERS – YOUR SUPPORT TRANSFORMS LIVES!

When our graduates come to us with stories of what a difference Home of the Sparrow has made in their lives, we love to share them with you. Not only has each of the women highlighted on this page maintained housing for themselves and their families, they have also purchased their own homes or are in the process of do-ing so! We are so proud of their accomplishments. They set their goals, determined plans to achieve those goals and followed through. Your support helped make these stories possible! Thank you! Tonia came to Home of the Sparrow in 2008 when she was 21 years old because she had been living with

different relatives and wanted a more stable home environment for her toddler. She learned about Habitat for

Humanity through her friend Elvira (an HOS participant) and attended a meeting in Coatesville. Within 13

hours after the meeting, she had completed her application. There were 76 people at the meeting for four

houses. Only six applicants qualified and Tonia was one of the four accepted in November 2016. Tonia has

completed 164 of the 200 necessary volunteer hours. She knows she will be in her new home soon.

We’re so excited Tonia!

Elvira and her three daughters came to HOS in March of 2009 when she lost her housing due to her divorce. During her time in our program, she completed training as a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant). She began working full time and secured her own apartment. While still in our pro-gram, she began pursuing her dream of home ownership through Habitat for Humanity. She began the application process, and completed 200 volunteer hours helping to build homes for others. She was recently approved and she and her daughters moved into their new home. Dreams do come true Elvira!

Lanita participated in our Supportive Housing Program in 2012 through a recommendation by her landlord. She was getting by financially, but was not saving money or following a budget. She says that by participating in the HOS program, she saw what she was spending and learned about budgeting. She met with a financial planner who helped her improve her credit score and she worked hard at saving money. She said there were often things she wanted to spend her money on, but she continued to save – reminding herself she wanted to be a homeowner. In June of 2015, she and her brother bought a home together. Lanita said she improved her financial skills significantly through our Supportive Housing Program and, to this day, she still keeps all of her receipts. Congratulations Lanita!

PREVENTING HOMELESSNESS BEFORE IT OCCURS

Homelessness comes at an extremely high cost and causes long-term negative consequences for families. To make things worse, landlords will often turn away applicants with recent evictions, forcing them into housing with substandard conditions in disadvantaged neighborhoods. Home of the Spar-row helps to ensure that this trauma never occurs by preventing women and children from experienc-ing homelessness in the first place.

Children who are experiencing homelessness

become more than

2x as likely to be in poor health.

On average, it is

6x more expensive to stay in a shelter than to prevent

homelessness. U.S. Department of Health and

Human Services

Every case is unique and our holistic case management model allows us to help women in their spe-cific situations. We partner with them as they overcome barriers, build resiliency and discover their own strengths and the ability to maintain their independence.

WHO YOU HELP – JESSICA works around the clock as a Certified Nursing Assistant at a nursing home. Her oldest son Eric is autistic and requires 24-hour care. She recently got custody of her niece because her brother is unable to care for his daughter. Last year her partner left and no longer provides any support to the family. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t make ends meet, so she called Home of the Sparrow.

Jessica had received an eviction notice. We helped her pay her back-rent and made sure she maintained a good relationship with her land-lord. Then Jessica enrolled in our Supportive Housing Program where she received rental subsidies so she could get back on her feet. She worked with her Program Coordinator on her budgeting and household management skills. She is doing well now!

We are also supporting Jessica with the special needs of her children. Her niece was very behind on her reading and we are paying for an education support program from our education fund. Her teachers say she is improving rapidly.

Jessica is raising her three children and her niece as a single mom.

Our Eviction Prevention Program prevents homelessness by working with women who have received an eviction notice. We provide emergency funding to resolve their debts and work with their landlords to repair relationships.

81 women and children avoided eviction or loss of utilities

Our Supportive Housing Program is a key, long-term home-lessness prevention tool that provides rental subsidies in con-cert with intensive case management. Rental subsidies can last from 3-18 months, during which participants work with their Pro-gram Coordinators to create a stability plan based on individual-ized needs assessments. These plans include skills-building in

financial literacy, career training, household management, and addressing the mental and/or physical health needs of both women and children.

122 women and children participated in the Supportive Housing Program

Our housing programs support single women and mothers in times of crisis. During that time, we stabilize single women and mothers and help them build better futures for themselves and their children. Our Graduate Outreach Program provides a long-term support network, helping them to continue this journey.

249 women and children

participated in our Graduate

Outreach Program

Through our Shared Housing Program, we match homeowners

(most often older women who can no longer afford to remain in

their homes) with home-seekers (typically women who are in

need of affordable housing or who are currently experiencing

homelessness).

36 women participated

in the Shared Housing

Program

WRAP – helping women reenter the community. In 2016, Home

of the Sparrow began a collaboration with the Chester County Adult

Probation, Parole and Pre-Trial Services Office (APO) to implement

comprehensive case management services to justice-involved

women through the Women’s Re-Entry Assessment Program-

ming (WRAP) Initiative. The program provides the knowledge and skills neces-

sary to ensure a smooth transition from incarceration into society.

61 women participated

in the WRAP Initiative

Our Pre-Senior Bridge Housing Program provides transitional

housing for women between the ages of 55 and 62. There is a

critical shortage of services for women in this age group as they

don’t qualify for senior-subsidized housing until they reach the

age of 62. Our houses in West Chester and Coatesville provide

women with safe homes while we work with them to access essential benefits

and resources and find long-term housing.

10 women participated

in the Pre-Senior Bridge

Housing Program

WHO YOU HELP – JUDITH came to Home of the Sparrow through our former transitional housing program. When she and her son Richie moved into our transitional house, Judith had broken up with Richie’s father, leaving her with no place to go. She was one of the first women to get assistance through our new Supportive Housing Program, enabling her to live in her own home again. Both programs prevented her from experienc-ing homelessness and provided the opportunity to re-build a stable living situation for herself and her son. After Richie’s father left the family, her son was dealing with a lot of anger issues and he struggled with his

fear of abandonment. With our wide supportive network, we were able to arrange a series of sessions with a

therapy dog. This helped him to better deal with his fears and to slowly overcome the trauma of abandon-

ment. Since we first met, Judith has truly turned her life around and she is now giving back to the program,

supporting single mothers and women in similar situations.

Studies confirm a clear link between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), trauma and poor social outcomes and health. The ACEs scoring test measures 10 types of childhood trauma. People with an ACE score of 6 or higher live, on aver-age, 20 years less than those with a score of one or less.

People with 4 or more ACEs are

4.6X more likely to have depressive moods

People with 4 or more ACEs are

12.2X more likely to

attempt suicide

Program have between 3-5 ACEs

Our staff measures the ACEs score of participants following national models for trauma-informed care. This enables us to identify and address any underly-ing issues. Home of the Sparrow is spearheading a transformative community project - the Chester County ACEs Coalition. This initiative is a cross-sector approach to truly breaking the cycle of poverty and ensuring that all Chester County residents have the support they need to be happy and healthy.

WHO YOU HELP – HEATHER has an M.A. in Human Services, she is in her late 20s and supports her older sister whose vision is se-verely impaired. With a graduate degree in her pocket, Heather was never expecting to be in this situation. Most of the women we partner with experience an unexpected event that throws them off balance. For Heather, it was a drastic reduction of her work hours and income and learning that she was expecting a child. When she came to us, her back was up against

the wall, with no money left to pay rent, a baby

on the way and a sister that completely relied

on her for support. She was over-whelmed by

these challenges and needed someone to sup-

port and guide her. We prevented an eviction

and subsidized her rent for a period of seven

months to ensure that Heather, her sister and

her new-born baby have a place to call home.

We were absolutely amazed by her determina-

tion to get back on her feet. With the support of

our program coordinators, she developed a

sustainable budget, got a new job that enables

her to live self-sufficiently, applied for and se-

cured Supplemental Security Income for her

sister and filed for child-support once the baby

was born. Drawing from our network of sup-

porters, we provided her with baby cloths and

items, making it possible for her to re-build her

savings.

Education - We work with mothers, teachers and children to make sure they are succeeding in school. We offer assistance with school supplies and work with families to access discounted internet services and computers so they can keep up with their peers. A volunteer works as a coach for children who are transi-tioning to higher education. Basic Needs - We distributed nearly 300 meals and 117 backpacks filled with school supplies. Mental and Physical Health - Each child is assessed and brought up to date with doctor’s appointments or inoculations, and provided access to counseling, if necessary.

Integrated Services for Long-Term Impact We apply an integrated service approach that addresses the complexity of problems our participants face. To create long-term success, we help families simultaneously improve their housing stability, well-being, education, health, and careers. Our goal is to address the critical barriers to long-term self-sufficiency and create transformational change in the lives of the women and children we serve. We know that housing instability and poverty are interdependent and that stable housing can hardly be achieved while living in poverty. Therefore, we employ a holistic strategy based on supportive housing services, educational opportunities and physical and mental health support to create lasting, generational impact.

INNOVATIVE WAYS IN WHICH VOLUNTEERS HELP OUR FAMILIES!

Dr. Lindsey Marshall, award-winning cosmetic and neuromuscular dentist in Ardmore, PA is partnering with Home of the Sparrow. Dr. Marshall is donating complimentary dental services to participants in our programs.

For women with low and very low incomes it is often impossible to afford cos-metic dentistry or even routine dental exams. Dr. Marshall’s collaboration will open many new doors for the women we support with the dental health needed for themselves and their children.

Dr. Marshall shared, “in reflecting upon my goals for the new year, I realized my greatest strength is the ability to restore a person’s confidence by giving them a happy, healthy smile. The women who have actively sought the support of Home of the Sparrow are eager to start anew and by giving them and their children dental services to improve their sense of self and overall health, I hope that the transition back to independence will be just a little bit easier.”

Every year we organize a get-together for the mothers in our programs to recharge and leave the challenges of everyday life behind for a couple of hours.

This year was special because it was our first brunch and op-portunity to partner with the Barnes Foundation. Former Board member and Barnes Docent Ann Moss, arranged an exclusive tour of the exhibits. She gave us unique insights into the found-er’s philosophy and goal to make art accessible to everyone.

Coming together for brunch and art on a sunny day in Philadel-phia provided program staff and participants the opportunity to relax, share current stories and renew friendships. We are thankful to our community of supporters who make events like this possible.

For families that have endured the trauma of homelessness, having a child attend college may never even be a thought. Former Board mem-ber Pat Sincavage is helping us change that. Pat has volunteered her time as a professional college counselor to assist numerous high school students in our programs. She helps them navigate the selec-tion process of the most appropriate college or vocational school, what majors might make the most sense for them, and assistance with the paperwork involved. Her passion and drive has already helped the daughter of a graduate of one of our programs get into Temple University. Her tremendous impact on the families in our programs was recently honored by Dunleavy & Associates.

JAZZ ON THE MAIN LINE 2017 “AN EVENING IN ITALY”

What happens when you have more than 100 hard-working, enthusiastic volunteers working non-stop on your main fundraiser of the year? They make sure your first event in a new venue is an amazing evening! Kudos to everyone involved! Emily Interrante and Paula King served as co-chairs of this year’s Jazz on the Mainline. They helped coordinate the efforts of all the sub-committees and we sincerely appreciate all of the time and effort they put in. Thank you so much to our Presenting Sponsor, Malvern Federal! President & CEO Tony Weagley strongly believes in the importance of giving back to the local community. The bank has long supported local charities and their beneficiaries through event sponsorships and grants from the Malvern Federal Charitable Foundation. Drexelbrook Catering did an outstanding job providing everything from the hors d’oeuvres to a delicious buffet and finishing up with a fantastic sundae bar. McKenzie BrewHouse provided their award-winning beer and City Rhythm Orchestra got the crowd out on the dance floor with their talented vocalists and distinctive sound. Our Decorating Committee transformed the Phelps School Fieldhouse into a beautiful Italian landscape. Vintage posters, lovely vignettes and colorful floral arrangements set the tone for the evening. The Live Auction Committee obtained great trips, including a week at a private Chateau in France and a week in an Italian Villa. Other bidders won time in Deer Valley, Utah; tickets for the Kimmel Center Broadway series in 2017 and Hamilton tickets in 2018 and more. BJ Jennings and her 1st Class Benefits team kept the bidding going and the audience motivated. The members of our Silent Auction Committee obtained items from every connec-tion they had and, as always, displayed them beautifully. They featured exciting trips, wonderful sports and theatre tickets, beautiful custom handmade items, and jewelry (just to name a few). Thank you to our generous sponsors and everyone who attended or participated in any way including donating auction items, helping with set-up and/or tear-down, decorating the fieldhouse, and all of the other tasks required to make an event this size possible. Thank you to all of the members of Jazz sub-committees who worked tirelessly for months to ensure a successful fundraiser. The $160,000+ raised will support our much-needed services to local families in need.

This helped him to better deal with his fears and to slowly overcome the trauma of abandon-

supporting single mothers and women in similar situations.

Chief Executive Officer Michelle E. Venema

Barbara Michelle
