Project idea ,tle: the Danube Data Cube A HUNAGI/GSDI Ini/a/ve supported by EUROGI What is Data Cube? This is a novel, innova,ve approach, which makes it easier for users to access and use space-‐based data, and allows efficient ,me series analyses and data assimila,on. Instead of managing scenes it works with a mul,-‐dimensional (space, ,me, data layers) Data Cube with pixel elements, which provides an efficient and effec/ve solu/on support with analysis-‐ready products for the user. Merit of the project idea Establishment of the Danube Data Cube, an infrastructure, tailored for the efficient use of /me series for retrospec,ve spa,o-‐temporal and predic,ve analysis suppor/ng the implementa/on of the Danube Region Strategy Aim of the pilot project To exploit the value of the preserved historical Earth Observa/on data and other relevant archived documents, ensuring efficient infrastructure for the retrospec/ve and predic/ve analysis, which can lead to more sounded decisions for the future in the areas of S3 (e.g. energy, health and water)

System design The system, architecture and data value chain could be designed in coopera,on with ESA using experiences and know-‐hows offered by CEOS Data Historical EO data could be provided by ESA ESRIN for the pilot area selected, while CEOS could offer some sample Data Cube data. Addi/onal inputs include historical thema,c data data, as digital map heritage, /me series. Data Cube also applicable to assimilate new data collected by novel and/or innova/ve manner (Sen/nel, IoT, ci/zen science). Promo/ng the use of open data/open source tools. Pilot apps The realized service has mul/purpose applicability. Possible and recommended areas include sustainable environment–related water and land issues, whereas it is an/cipated that historical /me-‐series and thema/c data are available. The recommended area for the pilot could be selected part of the Carpathian basin.

Par,cipants Interested par/es from the Danube Region Countries, RDSI community, Danube_Net liaisons From Hungary, it is an/cipated some members of HUNAGI (prime data providers incl. FÖMI, Met Service, Water Authority. Universi/es), but also some governmental en//es might be closely monitor the developments: Environmental Sustainability Directorate, NIIF, Hungarian Space Office at MoND or MoA. CEOS and its member ins/tu/ons: ESA and DLR. EUROGI and GSDI and their members (from Hungary: HUNAGI) Outlook: best prac, ces Opera/onal, large area realiza/on is the Australian Geoscience Data Cube a joint effort of the Geoscience Australia and CSIRO CEOS already started the implementa/on of a Na,onal Data Cube for Kenya based on wide interna/onal support of organisa/ons and founda/ons.

• EUROGI offers its exper/ze and competence of its members in spa/o-‐temporal data u/lisa/on addressed in the challenges related to big data, IoT, open and linked data, urban and spa/al planning, as well as in promo/ng R+D, Innova/on and SME involvements
• EUROGI supports the Danube Data Cube pilote ini/a/ve of HUNAGI/GSDI, expec/ng co-‐opera/on with ESA ESRIN with aims • to improve predic, ons and sustainable environment-‐related decision making based on
retrospec,ve analysis of available historical data in the Danube Region • to exploit the capabili,es of ESA ESRIN’s historical remotely sensed data with locally
available digital map-‐heritages, novel geospa/al and EO data and related advanced technologies and introducing a service based on Data Cube architecture as promoted by the CEOS WGISS
• to involve interested par,es from the countries of the Danube Region • Applica/on thema/cs would focus on the Carpathian basin as proposed area of interest
with emphasis on sustainable environment, water and land. • An,cipated spin-‐off: adop/ng best prac/ces in long-‐term spa/al data preserva/on, Data
Cube related RTD and innova/on, spa/o-‐temporal analysis, use open data and open source tools (e.g. NASA WW), strengthen SME sector, networking of the interested stakeholders, visibility of achievements and influence of key stakeholders decision makers.
