Behind the fast progressof China, in fact this country has a long historical background when its peopleunderwent hundreds years of difficulty, not to mention in 1949, the first timeCommunism is initiated by Mao Tse Tung. The characters of Suyan as therepresentation of Chinese mothers who moved to America in 1949 described inAmy Tan’s short story “Two Kinds”.The objectives of the study are: to find out the Chinese mothers’ characteras represented in “Two Kinds” short story and to discover the impacts ofoppression in China in 1949 towards the Chinese mothers’ character asrepresented in “Two Kinds” short story. The write collected the data through some steps, they were: first, readingand and finding the research problem, second was searching the related referencesfrom books and internet , the third was finding and selecting data from the shortstory, and the last the writer tried to find out the impact of oppression in China in1949 towards Chinese mothers characters as is represented in “Two Kinds” shortstory. The writer used theory of new criticism and feminism and the theory ofoppression. Those were taken from books, journals, and articles from internetwhich are related to the topic in this research. From this study, the writer found that despite the fast progress brought bythe Chinese Revolution in 1949, it also brings impact towards Chinese motherscharacters who used to be obedient, dependent, and had limited freedom in societybecomes the modern Chinese women who were independent, risk takers, optimistic, strict and ambitious. Furthermore, there are two impacts of oppressionin China in 1949 towards the Chinese mothers’ character as represented in “TwoKinds” short story, they are the way chinese mothers educate their children whichstill follow Confusianism and use force as the mean to achieve their purpose. Thesecond impact is changing Chinese mothers becoming rude.
