Message of the Commissioner General of Examinations

Twenty first century is a century which is pioneered by Information Communication Technology. During this century instigated with the concept of globalization, devices like the mobile phone, the computer, the internet and the satellite technology were turned out to be common devices. The tremendous changes brought in within a period of two decades into this field transformed every single arena such as social, economic and cultural sectors of the world population. In accordance with the new transformation, technology centred development strategies were adopted by all countries so that it mattered a lot to bring about a dramatic change in the world economy.

Consequently, with the intention of achieving swift economic development goals, appropriate modifications were introduced timely to the economy of Sri Lanka as well, including the education sector through newly introduced subjects to the curriculum and modification of syllabi. Hence, the subject General Information Technology (GIT) was introduced the school system in the year 2004 and in 2005, the grade 12 students sat the GIT Examination for the very first time. From this day onwards, GIT examination is conducted annually by the Department of Examinations.

However, since a practical subject like GIT is not supposed to be tested by a written examination, a step had to be taken to change the testing method that has been adopted. Therefore, arrangements have been made to conduct the GIT examination online from 2018 and afterwards using a method of practical skill evaluation. We believe that the online GIT examination will be very popular among students and their enthusiasm will be increased due to practical test method.

At present, only 75% of the eligible candidates sit the GIT examination every year and with the new change that is going to be introduced, we hope the percentage taking the test may be increased.

Constant changes are necessary to reach development. To bring in changes, programmes should be planned and implemented while conquering the obstacles. This attempt of change will lay the foundation to produce a generation of students who can successfully face challenges of the 21st century and at the same time adopt an efficient, accurate, and productive evaluation method. In this guideline prepared for the General Information Technology Examination (GIT), Part I consists of general information regarding the examination and test administration while Part II includes the structure of the question papers and Prototype questions. Part I General Information Technology

1. Common Information regarding the exam

1.1. Introduction

General Information Technology (GIT) subject was introduced to G.C.E (A/L) Grade 12 students in 2004 with the aim of uplifting computer literacy of Sri Lankan school children. This subject is taught in every school which conducts G.C.E.(A.L.) classes and every student who studies for G.C.E.(A.L.) should study this subject.

Content of this subject has been prepared with the intention of improving practical knowledge and usage of Computer Technology but the student achievement was measured by a written test upto the present. At the initial stages of testing this subject, the infrastructure facilities were not sufficient to conduct a practical examination. Therefore a written test was administered in order to measure the achievement levels.

At present the attention of students for this subjects has been increased with the establishment of Computer Recourse Centers, school computer labs etc. As it is not fair to measure practical knowledge by a written test, and since a subject of this nature should deviate from conventional written evaluation method, a need for more suitable evaluation methodology arised. Therefore, The Department of Examinations is planning to conduct the General Information Technology (GIT) Examination online from year 2018 Onwards.

Common Instruction

1.2 Applying for the exam Principals of schools have to submit the application stating names and medium of all applicants studying in Grade 12, G.C.E.(A.L.).

1.3 Medium The exam will be conducted in all three mediums Sinhala Tamil and English.

1.4 Identity Cards Only the identity card issued by the Department for Registration of persons, Sri Lanka or valid pass port is accepted.

1.5 Admission Cards Before two weeks of the exam admission cards are posted to the principal of relevant school. As soon as they are received, they should be distributed among applicants. Applicants should be advised to check for the accuracy of the admission cards. If there is any change to be made in the admission , principal of the school have to inform to the School Exam Organization branch of Department of Examination without any delay. Amendments are made only according to the original application.

1.6 Rules Rules and Regulations imposed from time to time by the Commissioner General of

Examinations regarding examination are valid for each and every task of this exam.

1.7 Deciding Grades Results will be issued according to the marks they obtain as follow.

General Information Technology Examination(For exams 2018 Onwards)

Above exam relevant to new syllabus, is scheduled to be held on January 2019. It is planned to be held online from 2018 at selected computer labs in schools, regional computer resource centers.

Conducting the exam It is expect to held the exam in 16 stages with in eight days as two sessions per day, morning and evening. Applicants will be sent to his/her school computer lab or the nearest lab.

In order to make students aware of the exam, three pilot tests will be held as follows,

1. First pilot test – within October 2018

2. Second Pilot test – last weeks of November 2018

3. Third Pilot test – within December 2018/ January 2019

Applicants will have to sit for 1st pilot test at his/her preferred center, 02nd & 03rd at selected centers. Zonal Directors of Education will direct the students those who do

not have computer facilities to the nearest schools with such facilities.

Part IIPrototype Questions

To evaluate students achievement levels, essay tests and objective tests will be used. At the same time to evaluate practical subjects, practical test methodologies will be used. In order to assure consistency of the evaluation procedure, main concern will be given to objective type tests.

When awarding marks for essay type questions, mark allocation will be depend on markers personal views and ideas, and awarding marks become subjective. But as there is only one correct answer in objective type questions awarding marks will totally be free from personal views. In a practical test, marks will be allocated to true talent of the applicant.

In the part II of this instructional manual, prototype questions are given along with the structure of the paper and the marking scheme. Students will not be allowed to provide written answers. They should answer online.

This exam consists of two papers. 1st paper consists of 40 MCQ questions of four choices. Paper II consists of seven practical questions. Paper I & paper II should be answered online.
