San Vicente de Paul dando árbol Nuestra Conferencia de San Vicente de Paúl está planeando nuevamente este año entregar alimentos y juguetes a 160 familias en nuestra área para Navidad. St. Vincent de Paul Giving Tree

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is planning again this year to deliver food and toys to 160 families in our area for Christmas. We will need gifts for 265 children. The Christmas Giving Tree has been set up in the vestibule of the Church. We invite you to select one or more angels from the tree and purchase a new gift for that child. (Suggest toys for younger children and gift cards for teens). IMPORTANT: ►Gift wrap the present, ►Write on the back of the original angel what the gift is ►Attach the angel to the wrapped present and put them under the tree by no later than Sunday, Dec. 10th PLEASE!!! Knowing the nature of a gift assures getting the right gift to the right child. Thank you for your generosity spreading your love to those in need. In conjunction with all agencies delivering Christmas baskets, we will be delivering on Saturday, Dec. 16th this year. Liturgy Corner Compiled by Pat Raschio (sources Formed, At Home With The Word, Scott Hahn and Loyola Press, Sourcebook) Today’s Gospel is taken from the end of Mark’s Gospel, the chapter that immediately precedes Mark’s account of Je-sus’ Passion. Having been questioned repeatedly by the scribes and the Pharisees, Jesus is now questioned by his disciples—Peter, James, John, and Andrew—who want details about his prediction of the destruction of the Temple. Jesus answers with many warnings about the difficulties that the disciples will face. Jesus’ warnings to his disciples emphasizes the need for watchfulness. The Son of Man will come without warning; only the Father knows the exact hour. The disciples must not be caught unprepared when this time comes. Scholars believe that Mark’s Gospel was written around the time of the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in A.D. 70. Mark’s audience consisted of Chris-tians who were living in difficult social and political times, times of conflict. They were likely beginning to face persecu-tion as followers of Jesus. In this difficult time, it helped to recall that Jesus had foretold of such difficulties. Early Chris-tian communities took courage from Jesus’ warning to remain alert and watchful, and they found in his words a way to persevere through suffering. Mark’s Gospel sets the tone for our Advent spirituality: “Be watchful! Be alert!” Paul re-minds the Corinthians that “they are not lacking in any spiritual gifts, Christ will keep them firm to the end, God is faith-ful, and by him you were called to fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” This message is for all the baptized as we begin our Advent preparation. Christ has given us the sacraments, especially the Eucharist to keep us prepared for His return. Today we begin the season of Advent, which marks the start of a new liturgical year for the Church. The readings for Sunday Mass are arranged on a three-year cycle. Each year features a different Gospel—Matthew, Mark, or Luke. Readings from the Gospel of John are interspersed throughout all three years. With this year’s first Sunday of Advent, we begin Cycle B of the Lectionary, which focuses our attention on the Gospel of Mark. This week and next week, our Gospel readings present two important Advent themes: the Lord’s return at the end of time and John the Baptist’s preparation for Jesus. Why must we wait when people around us are already celebrating Christmas? We know how the story ends: Jesus is born and laid in a manger! We wait because Advent isn’t simply about celebrating Christ’s birth centuries ago, but about connecting with our own soul’s longing for Christ’s Kingdom to come. We wait and keep watch this Advent, pray-ing for our Lord to be born anew in our hearts, our communities, and our world. I invite you to Listen to the You Tube “Waiting in Silence.” It last 5 minutes and is very prayerful. The words fit so well with our Advent Theme. Reflect on these questions as you fill in your star prayer for Joy and Hope. What does your heart hope for this Advent? How might God speak to this hope? The parish Advent theme this year is: “Make Our Hope Our Joy” All are invited to take the star, cut it out, and write your prayer for Hope and Joy. Place your completed star in the basket in the back of church. Your star will be hung along the walls of the Church. As we, the parish, journey toward the Birth of Christ, your stars will guide the way.

Formed: To help you prepare for the coming of Jesus on Christmas day I invite you to view the Anima a study on formed. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas,” or, at least that’s the assumption based on that familiar holiday song. But what does that look like at your house? Most of us anticipate the great sales at the mall on the day after Thanksgiving, string lights on the outside of our house, and decorating the inside of our homes. But how exactly are we preparing our hearts for the greatest gift we’ve ever been given? Through an exploration of the mystery of the Incarnation, the Virgin Birth, and the events surrounding the arrival of Jesus, this Advent study offers an opportunity to experience the joy of the true meaning of Christmas. Week two of the Advent study is Kenosis. Kenosis is a Greek word that means "emptying." In this session, we are introduced to the Person of Jesus, who emptied himself to become human in the Incarnation. Bish-op Hying explains how the Incarnation is God’s answer to our longing for a “God with skin on,” a God who is near and intimate with our human experience. Jesus invites us to imitate this gift by allowing our own suffering to open our hearts to greater compassion and mercy for others. For your reflection: In your estimation, why has “Merry Christmas” be-come so controversial? Jesus’ claims are controversial: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me” [John 14:6]. His call to conversion is controversial: “whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” [Matthew 16:25]. His effect on people is controversial: “Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division“ [Luke 12:51]. And, Jesus warned his disciples that this would be the case: "If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you” [John 15:18]. Wishing someone a “Merry Christmas” is to sug-gest our joy is found in the Christ child. Tragically, many have not discovered that joy. Ironically, the preferred “Happy Holiday” is derived from old English “Happy Holy Day” which begs the question: Why is Christmas a Holy Day? Online faith formation Parish code :7GGJ7J.
