SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVATIONS LOS SANTOS Y OTRAS CELEBRACIONES

Sacred Heart Parish School is dedicated to educating the whole child. We are com-mitted to instilling the ideals of service, justice, and compassion in each of our stu-dents. As part of this commitment, we strive to offer enriching experiences that will build our students’ social skills, leadership abilities, and moral awareness, no matter whether they are just beginning their formal education in preschool or whether they are eighth graders preparing for the rigors of high school.

Sacred Heart Parish School has been educating students in the Hollister community for 125 years. This strong sense of tradition can be seen in our large and diverse array of alumni, each of whom were impacted by the Catholic education provided at Sacred Heart. Nestled in downtown Hollister, Sacred Heart seeks to provide our students with a well-rounded and faith-filled education. Together with our school’s families, we help our students to be academically prepared and grounded in gospel values by providing them an environment where they feel safe to grow, learn, and develop. We provide our students with support that strengthens their spiritual and moral guidance.

Sacred Heart Parish School is committed to faith, service, and academic excellence. We believe these are the cornerstone values of educating faith-filled and intellectual citizens. Our students’ development is not limited only by the classes they take as part of the regular curriculum. Recognizing the necessity of educating the whole student, we provide opportunities in music, physical education, technology, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), Spanish, and other electives. Through their experiences at Sacred Heart, students will be able to observe life through a creative, analytical, and ethical perspective.

In sum, Sacred Heart Parish School is a community committed and rooted in service, justice, and compassion. We welcome you and thank you for being a part of our community.

God Bless,

Los mosaicos an guos cris anos muestran

CATECHESIS CORNER Bap sm Con nued….

Bap sm in the Early Church

That the early Church permi ed pouring instead of immer-sion is demonstrated by the Didache, a Syrian liturgical manual that was widely circulated among the churches in the first few centuries of Chris anity, perhaps the earliest Chris an wri ng outside the New Testament. The Didache was wri en around A.D. 70 and, though not inspired, is a strong witness to the sacramental prac ce of Chris ans in the apostolic age. In its seventh chapter, the Did-ache reads, “Concerning bap sm, bap ze in this manner: Hav-ing said all these things beforehand, bap ze in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit in living water [that is, in running water, as in a river]. If there is no living wa-ter, bap ze in other water; and, if you are not able to use cold water, use warm. If you have neither, pour water three mes upon the head in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spir-it.” These instruc ons were composed either while some of the apostles and disciples were s ll alive or during the next genera on of Chris ans, and they represent an already estab-lished custom. The tes mony of the Didache is seconded by other early Chris an wri ngs. Hippolytus of Rome said, “If water is scarce, whether as a constant condi on or on occasion, then use whatever water is available” (The Apostolic Tradi on, 21 [A.D. 215]). Pope Cornelius I wrote that, as Nova an was about to die, “he received bap sm in the bed where he lay, by pour-ing” (Le er to Fabius of An och [A.D. 251]; cited in Eusebius, Ecclesias cal History, 6:4311). Cyprian advised that no one should be “disturbed because the sick are poured upon or sprinkled when they receive the Lord’s grace” (Le er to a Certain Magnus 69:12 [A.D. 255]). Tertullian described bap sm by saying that it is done “with so great simplicity, without pomp, without any considerable nov-elty of prepara on, and finally, without cost, a man is bap zed in water, and amid the u erance of some few words, is sprin-kled, and then rises again, not much (or not at all) the clean-er” (On Bap sm, 2 [A.D. 203]). Obviously, Tertullian did not consider bap sm by immersion the only valid form, since he says one is only sprinkled and thus comes up from the water “not much (or not at all) the cleaner.”

Ancient Chris an Mosaics Show Pouring Then there is the ar s c evidence. Much of the earliest Chris-

an artwork depicts bap sm—but not bap sm by immersion! If the recipient of the sacrament is in a river, he is shown standing in the river while water is poured over his head from a cup or shell. Tile mosaics in ancient churches and pain ngs in the catacombs depict bap sm by pouring. Bap steries in early cemeteries are clear witnesses to bap sms by infusion. The

en re record of the early Church—as shown in the New Testa-ment, in other wri ngs, and in monumental evidence—indicates that the mode of bap sm was not restricted to immersion. Other archaeological evidence confirms the same thing. An early Chris an bap stery was found in a church in Jesus’ hometown of Nazareth, yet this bap stery, which dates from the second centu-ry, was too small and narrow in which to immerse a person. END OF SECTION ON BAPTISM ———————————————————————————-

CHRIST IN THE EUCHARIST

Protestant a acks on the Catholic Church o en focus on the Eucharist. This demonstrates that opponents of the Church—mainly Evangelicals and Fundamentalists—recognize one of Ca-tholicism’s core doctrines. What’s more, the a acks show that Fundamentalists are not always literalists. This is seen in their interpreta on of the key biblical passage in which Christ speaks about the sacrament that will be ins tuted at the Last Supper: John 6. Let’s examine the last half of that chapter. John 6:30 begins a colloquy that took place in the synagogue at Capernaum. The Jews asked Jesus what sign he could perform so that they might believe in him. As a challenge, they noted that “our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness.” Could Jesus top that? He told them the real bread from heaven comes from the Father. “Give us this bread always,” they said. Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst.” At this point the Jews un-derstood him to be speaking metaphorically.

Again and Again

Jesus first repeated what he said, then summarized: “‘I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.’ The Jews then disputed among them-selves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’” (John 6:51–52). His listeners were stupefied because now they understood Jesus literally—and correctly. He again repeated his words, but with even greater emphasis, and introduced the statement about drinking his blood: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him” (John 6:53–56). To be con nued...
