IHME 2015 – Kuratoinnin taide

Vuoden 2015 IHME tuo Suomeen yhden merkittävimmistä nykytaiteilijoista. Meil-lä on ilo esittää brittiläiseltä Jeremy Delleriltä kolme teosta: yksi hänen läpimur-toteoksistaan, Acid Brass (1997), jossa yhdistyvät 30 henkilön vaskiorkesterin volyymi ja 1990-luvun teknohitit sekä kaksi aivan uutta teosta.

IHME-teoksessa Saa koskea taiteilija on valinnut kiinnostavia esineitä seitse-män pääkaupunkiseudun historiallisen museon kokoelmista teoksensa materiaa-leiksi. Teos syntyy esineiden, tarinoiden ja yleisön kohtaamisista kauppakeskuk-sissa, asemilla ja muissa arkiympäristöissä.

IHME-päivien kohokohta on Dellerin valitsemista rockdokumenttielokuvista koostuva 24-tuntinen maraton, 24 Hour Rockshow. Mukana on kokeellisia harvi-naisuuksia ja huippuklassikoita 1960-luvulta tähän päivään.

IHME 2015 – The Art of Curating

IHME 2015 brings a leading contemporary artist to Finland. We have the pleasure of showing three pieces by the British Jeremy Deller: one of his breakthrough works, Acid Brass (1997), which combines the volume of a 30-person brass band with techno-hits of the 1990s; along with two totally new works.

In his IHME Project, Do Touch, Deller has selected interesting objects from the collections of seven of the Helsinki Metropolitan region’s historical museums as the materials for the work. The work itself emerges out of encounters between the objects, spoken tales and the public in shopping centres, stations and other everyday environments.

Meanwhile, the highpoint of the IHME Days will be the 24-hour marathon showing of rock documentaries selected by Deller, 24 Hour Rockshow. This will include experimental rarities and major classics from the 1960s up to the present.

Jeremy Deller: Saa koskea

Brittiläinen taiteilija Jeremy Deller on suunnitellut vuoden 2015 IHME-teoksen nimeltään Saa koskea. Tässä uudessa teoksessa yleisö pääsee arkisilla reiteillään kohtaamaan hetken yhteistä menneisyyttä, kun museoesineet jättävät vitriininsä ja matkaavat kaupunkilaisten käsiin julkisissa tiloissa.

Pääkaupunkiseudun historiallisten museoiden kokoelmista valittuihin esinei-siin voi tutustua osana taideteosta 16.–22.3.2015 seuraavilla tapahtumapaikoilla: Kauppakeskus Itis, Kauppakeskus Kaari, Kauppakeskus Kamppi, Kauppakes-kus Myyrmanni, Kompassitori, Leppävaaran terveysasema ja Töölön kisahalli. IHME-teoksen kohdeyleisöä ovat ihmiset, jotka liikkuvat tapahtumapaikoilla sat-tumalta, arkisten reittiensä varrella. IHME-teos on mukana myös IHME-päivillä Vanhalla ylioppilastalolla sunnuntaina 29.3. klo 14.00–18.00.

Hanke toteutetaan yhteistyössä seuraavien museoiden kanssa: Designmuseo, Helsingin kaupunginmuseo, Kansallismuseo, Luonnontieteellinen keskusmuseo, Sotamuseo, Tekniikan museo ja Tullimuseo. Taiteilija on valinnut esineet yhdessä museoiden henkilökunnan kanssa. Teoksen henkilökunta kertoo yleisölle esineistä sekä ajanjaksosta, jolloin niitä on käytetty.

IHME Project 2015: Do touch

The British artist Jeremy Deller has designed the IHME Project 2015 entitled Do touch. In this new work, the public on their everyday rounds will momentarily be faced with their shared past, when museum objects leave their glass cases and make their way into the hands of city residents in public spaces.

People will have a chance to inspect selected objects from the collections of Helsinki’s historical museums as part of the IHME Project on March 16 – March 22, 2015. The venues are: Kisahalli Sports Hall, Kompassitori, Shopping Mall Itis, Shopping Mall Kaari, Shopping Mall Kamppi, Shopping Mall Myyrmanni and Leppävaara Health Centre. The target audience of the IHME Project is the people that accidentally, on their everyday routes, visit the venue and bump into the project. The IHME Project will also visit The Old Student House on Sunday 29.3 at 14.00–18.00 during the IHME Days.

IHME Project will be realised in partnership with the following museums in Helsinki: Customs Museum, Design Museum, Finnish Museum of Natural History LUOMUS, Helsinki City Art Museum, Military Museum, Museum of Technology and National Museum. The artist has selected the objects together with the staff of the collaborating museums. The IHME Project staff members are trained to give further information on the objects and the time period they were used.

Jeremy DellerLontoossa asuva Jeremy Deller (s. 1966) on yksi Britannian tunnetuimpia ny-kytaiteilijoita. Hänen tuotantonsa käsittää monialaisia tuotantoja julkisen tilan performansseista näyttelyihin ja elokuviin. Julkinen tila on ollut Dellerin teosten esityspaikka hänen uransa alusta lähtien. Hän käsittelee usein populaarikulttuu-rin ilmiöitä, jotka liittyvät yhteiskunnalliseen muutokseen ja jotka tuovat erilaisia yhteisöjä yhteen. Monissa teoksissaan Deller on työskennellyt yhdessä ns. taval-listen ihmisten kanssa antaen heille mahdollisuuden tuoda heille tärkeitä asioita laajemman yleisön tietoisuuteen. Taiteilija on myös lapsuudestaan saakka ollut intohimoinen museovieras, jota kiinnostaa menneisyyden läsnäolo nykyhetkessä. Jeremy Dellerille on myönnetty merkittävä Turner-palkinto vuonna 2004 ja hän edusti Britanniaa Venetsian biennaalissa vuonna 2013. IHME on esittänyt Dellerin elokuvia osana festivaaliohjelmaa vuosina 2008, 2012 ja 2013. Hänen teoksiaan on nähty myös Social Hackers -näyttelysarjassa MUU-galleriassa vuonna 2000.

The London-based Jeremy Deller (b. 1966) is one of Britain’s best-known contem-porary artists. His production spans performances in public space, exhibitions, films and videos. He has made works in public space right from the start of his ca-reer. His work often deals with phenomena in the field of popular culture indicat-ing social change and bringing different types of communities together. In several of his projects Deller has collaborated with the so-called ordinary people, giving them the possibility to share their important issues to a wider audience. A keen museum-goer since childhood, Deller is also interested in the presence of the past in the present. Jeremy Deller was awarded the prestigious Turner Prize in 2004 and represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 2013. IHME showed his films as part of the Festival programme in 2008, 2012 and 2013. His work was shown in Helsinki for the first time in a series of exhibitions entitled Social Hackers at MUU Gallery in 2000.

Töölö Brass Band ja Jeremy Dellerin Acid Brass (1997)

IHMEellä on ilo esittää osana vuoden 2015 festivaaliohjelmaa yksi Jeremy Dellerin läpimurtoteoksista, Acid Brass vuodelta 1997. Tämän teoksen kautta Deller löysi oman taiteellisen ilmaisunsa tai oikeastaan oivalluksen siitä, mitä kaikkea se voisi olla: taiteilijan ei tarvitse tuottaa esineitä vaan taiteilija voi tuottaa tilanteita, tapahtumia, saada aikaan asioita yhdessä ihmisten kanssa ja nauttia siitä. Kuten taiteilija itse on todennut: ”Tämä kokemus opetti minulle, että voisin taiteilijana tehdä juuri tällaisia sotkuisia, laidasta toiseen liikkuvia, avoimia projekteja ja se vapautti minut ajattelemaan taiteilijuudesta toisi, perinteestä vapautuneena. Vaskiorkesteri vapautti minut.”

Acid Brass käsittää kuusi Dellerin valitsemaa kappaletta, jotka esittää upea 30-henkinen vaskiorkesteri Töölö Brass Band johtajanaan Ville Paakkunainen. Ai-nutkertainen esitys tapahtuu perjantaina 27.3. klo 17.00 Vanhan ylioppilastalon portailla ja sateen tai kovan pakkasen yllättäessä Vanhan sisätiloissa.

IHME has the pleasure of showing one of Jeremy Deller’s breakthrough works, Acid Brass from 1997, as part of its 2015 Festival programme. It was through this piece that Deller found his own mode of artistic expression, or more precisely, he recognized all that it could be: an artist does not have to produce objects, but can produce situations, events, make things happen, together with people, and enjoy it. As Deller himself has said: “The experience taught me that I could do these messy, free-ranging, open-ended projects, and that freed me up from thinking about being an artist in a traditional sense. I had been liberated by a brass band.”Acid Brass consists of six tunes chosen by Deller, which are played by the splendid 30-strong Töölö Brass Band, led by Ville Paakkunainen. This unique performance will take place at 17:00 on Friday, March 27 on the steps of the Old Student House in Helsinki or, in the event of rain or severe frost, indoor.

Taiteilija kuraattorina -seminaarissa nostetaan esiin useita polttavia kysymyksiä taiteilijan ja kuraattorin ammatti-identiteetin risteyskohdasta. Miten kuraattorin työn menetelmät tai työvaiheet tai näyttelyn käsite itsessään voivat olla myös taiteellisen ilmaisun välineitä? Mitä taiteilijuus tuo kuraattoriuteen ja toisaalta, voiko kuraattori toimia kuin taiteilija ja mitä se tarkoittaa. Historiallisen katsauk-sen kansainväliseen kenttään tekee WIELS-taidekeskuksen johtaja Dirk Snauwa-ert. Mukana keskustelussa ovat muun muassa taiteilija Simon Starling, Johann Jacobs museon johtaja Roger M. The Artist as Curator raises a burning question that occupies a crucial position in a number of artists’ and curators’ professional identities. How can the methods, the stages of production or the concept of the exhibition used in a curator’s work in themselves also be tools of artistic expression? What does being an artist bring to curatorship? And, on the other hand, can a curator work like an artist, creative-ly, and what does that mean? Dirk Snauwaert, the founding director of WIELS Contemporary Art Centre will give a historical survey of the topic in an interna-tional context. Joining in the discussion will be artist Simon Starling, director of the Johann Jacobs Museum Roger M. Is freedom of expression absolute – do all restrictions on our freedom to express ourselves violate a basic civil right? How do we distinguish between criticism and insult? Have we, the citizens become oversensitive or is our problem excessive, reckless communication that drowns out the essentials? Is freedom of expression a Western value? The popular, multivocal IHME Marathon is the highpoint of Sunday on the IHME Days. In the ten talks Finland-resident visual artists and writers (among others) will talk about what makes a good exhibition and what curating means to them individually. Meidän IHMEessä tavataan vuoden 2015 taidekasvatushankkeiden tekijöitä sekä kuullaan IHME-teoksesta taidekasvatuksen näkökulmasta. Tilaisuudessa tutustu-taan myös Kaija Kaitavuoren ja Päivi Venäläisen laatimiin opettajille suunnattui-hin oppimateriaaleihin tehtävineen.

Aalto-yliopiston muunto-opiskelijat esittelevät Pohjois-Tapiolan koulussa toteuttamansa IHME-kouluprojektin ja kuvataiteilija Kari Cavén Helsingin kau-pungin nuorisoasiainkeskuksen kanssa yhteistyössä järjestetyn Valehtelijoiden Klubin. Lisäksi kuullaan HUMAKin tuottamista Esineiden tarinat -työpajoista, joiden osallistujina olivat työyhteisöt sekä Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulun ja Sibelius-Akatemian MAPSI-harjoittelusta, jossa keskityttiin osallistavaan palaut-teen keruuseen.

At Our IHME you can meet some of the persons involved in the art education projects for IHME 2015 and hear about the IHME Project from an art educational perspective. We also explore Kaija Kaitavuori’s and Päivi Venäläinen’s teaching materials for teachers.

The event presents the IHME school project realized by Master’s students from Aalto University in Pohjois-Tapiola School and the Liars’ Club, a series of events designed by visual artist Kari Cavén and organized in collaboration with the City of Helsinki Youth Department. We will also hear about the HUMAK-pro-duced Objects Tell Tales workshops for people in work communities, and about the MAPSI practical assignments coordinated by the Laurea University of Applied Sciences and Sibelius Academy, which focused on collecting participatory feed-back.

Come and hear ideas about how contemporary art can be applied in teaching, and about opportunities for cooperating with IHME! The event will be hosted by lecturer Marja Rastas from the School of Arts, Design and Architecture at Aalto University.

IHME-teoksen lisäksi IHME ja taiteilija Jeremy Deller toteuttavat huikean 24 tun-tia kestävän rock-dokumenttien sarjan nimeltään 24 Hour Rockshow. Rockshow on osa Vanhalla ylioppilastalolla pidettävien IHME-päivien ohjelmaa.

Sarjassa nähdään koko läntistä maailmaa musiikillaan liikuttaneiden artistien konserttitaltiointeja ja haastatteluja, joita on harvoin nähty elokuvateattereissa. Elokuvien tyylilaji vaihtelee kokeellisempien ryhmien rapista punkkiin ja hip-hopiin, rokista hevimetalliin ja souliin.

Elokuvien ohella IHME esittää Yle tv-arkiston hienoja rock- ja faniaiheisia uutisklippejä sekä otteita aiheeseen liittyvistä ohjelmista.

Along with the IHME Project, IHME and artist Jeremy Deller are staging a stun-ning 24-hour rock-documentary marathon – 24 Hour Rockshow. The Rock show will be part of the IHME Days event to be held at the Old Student House in Helsinki.

The lineup will include rarely shown concert recordings and interviews with artists whose music got the whole western world on its feet. The music genres range from the more experimental shores of rap to punk and hip hop, and from rock to heavy metal and soul.

IHME will also be showing some great news footage from Yle’s TV archive about rock music and its fans, along with excerpts from relevant programmes.

Come to the Old Student House for a whole night and day – Enjoy films and music, dance and live for the moment! Bring your sleeping bag!

Café Vanha will be open for the entire Rockshow. Rock-Doc deals include midnight snacks, breakfast, popcorn and sweets. Get coffee at vinyl-era prices with the spe-cial pass.
