Rhodes Scholarship Overview
Applications are now open in Saudi Arabia for the Rhodes Scholarships – post-graduate awards supporting outstanding students, to enable two to three years of study, depending on the academic route taken, at the University of Oxford. Students aged 19-27 from Saudi Arabia will be eligible to now apply.
The Rhodes Scholarship for Saudi Arabia was first launched in 2019, thanks to the generous support of Muhammad Alagil. Education is one of the core elements of Vision 2030, the Kingdom’s ambitious blueprint for the future. The Rhodes Scholarship in Saudi Arabia will enable students across the Kingdom to fully develop their skills and knowledge in the fields that will help Saudi Arabia achieve its goals under Vision 2030.
The first Scholar from Saudi Arabia, Majd Abdulghani, arrived at Rhodes House last October, where she joined the 2019 Rhodes Class of 101 Scholars, coming to Oxford from all corners of the world. Majd is currently doing a DPhil in Oncology and will be joined in October 2020 by Sami Alahmadi, who graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in Biological Sciences and minoring in Spanish. Whilst at Oxford, Sami would like to focus on global health and public policy to tackle health inequities and social injustice at a systemic level.
“Rhodes Scholars are like everyone else. The only difference is that we took a chance and we decided to apply. The journey you go on through the application: that’s the main thing that you should strive to get out of it. The first step to actually failing at something is to exclude yourself from it in the first place. But if you give yourself a chance, you don’t ever have any regrets.”
Majd Abdulghani, DPhil in Oncology (Saudi Arabia & Balliol 2019)
THE RHODES SCHOLARSHIPThe Rhodes Scholarship is the world’s preeminent and oldest graduate fellowship, based at the University of Oxford since 1903. Administered by the Rhodes Trust in Oxford, the programme awards 100 fully funded Scholarships each year to students from anywhere in the world with proven academic excellence who also show exceptional character, leadership, achievement in extra-curricular activities and a commitment to solving humanity’s challenges.
The Scholarship is not just a financial bursary, it is a life-changing opportunity for exceptional young people with the potential to make a difference for good in the world. Rhodes Scholars are people who have a vision of how the world could be better and the energy to make a difference – whatever their sphere of interest.
Nearly 8,000 Rhodes Scholars have gone on to serve at the forefront of government, education, the arts, NGOs, commerce, research and other sectors. They are well known advocates for expanded social justice, and have advanced the frontiers of science and medicine.
The strong network Rhodes Scholars is proof of the life-long fellowship with ongoing opportunities to connect with current and Senior Scholars and, beyond that, a warm and engaging community within Scholars typically develop enduring friendships.
Whilst at Oxford, Scholars will be supported to develop their leadership skills through series of workshops, such as the Rhodes Character, Service and Leadership programme, which encourages Scholars to develop a lifelong commitment to lead and serve others with practical skills and tools to craft a life of risk-taking, impact and passion.
APPLICATION TIMELINE
Please note: dates vary slightly due to which Rhodes constituency you are applying to. COVID-19 update: please rest assured that it is business as usual – both the University of Oxford and the Rhodes Trust anticipate being able to adjust to the challenge. We advise applicants to monitor the Oxford university’s and the Rhodes Trust’s websites for potential changes to the application process.
