or Gen Eidem, a frequent theater-goer inFargo-Moorhead, live dramatic productionsfeed the soul, she says. Theater contributes

to the quality of our life by energizing us andby providing a means for us to come together for acommon reason. There is something totally magicalabout theater, and believe me, we dont have to fly offto NYC to find good productions. We have them righthere in our area.

ar aroEidem isnt alone in her appreciation for local

theater. The dramatic arts have long been animportant part of the Fargo-Moorhead community.

We have always had a strong history of supporting

the performing arts, and in the recent past, that hasreally grown, says Dayna Del Val, executive directorof The Arts Partnership. The community has been

very supportive of the work being done by the varioustheatrical companies with both financial assistanceand with attendance. This is a community that seemsto really value live performance.

And theaters in Fargo-Moorhead offer liveperformances in a number of styles and genresincluding musical theater, classic American theater, contemporary theater and true community theater,Del Val says. The community also offers dramaticprogramming for every age group, from the very

youngest children all the way up to senior adults. We now have multiple summer programs

specifically geared for elementary, junior and seniorhigh school students, Del Val says. We have alsoseen a surge in the number and variety of types ofadult theatrical experiences being offered throughoutthe community.

t p bgWhile theater patrons broaden their horizons

by enjoying live theater, the performers and

behind-the-scenes workers gain additional value. One of my favorite things that I take away from

my involvement in the theater is meeting new people, says Linda Hinrichs, who has performed in plays withseveral local companies. I consider it a very specialtreat when I have the opportunity to perform withothers that I have been on stage with before. Iappreciate the experience of working with differentdirectors and learning from them, as well as thepeople I am acting with.

Over the past several years, Fargo-Moorhead has

become a haven for performers, theater buffsand theater novices who want to experiencesomething new and exciting. And the dramaticarts have made Fargo-Moorhead a richer, moreinteresting place to live.

On any given weekend throughout the year, there is at least one live theatrical performance goingon somewhere, and often, there is more than one,Del Val says.

Our programming has expanded and increasedas our quality of life has. Its been a very symbioticrelationship, as the demand for both more theatricalprogramming and quality of life issues have grownup together. Today, there is cutting-edge theater beingproduced [here] as well as contemporary and classicalmusicals. The best of American theater and PulitzerPrize-winning plays are being done. Comedies, dramas, farces, musicals and more are showcasingthe best of the theatrical experience to our audiencesand our actors.

Fargo-Moorhead foodies have a lot to be proudabout when it comes to the local restaurantscene. Innovative foreign cuisine jostles goodol American standbys, sometimes on the

same menu. This is an area that likes choice, and itsrestaurateurs respond. We have a variety, and the majority of our

restaurants are locally owned so they add a lotof flair and personality unique to Fargo, saysMike Hahn, president and CEO of the DowntownCommunity Partnership. They help our downtowncore stay vibrant, but also add to the overallpersonality of the community.

One of the best-known players on Fargos restaurantroster is Mezzaluna, which hangs its hat on the useof fresh, local ingredients in a rotating menu.

Were definitely known for our duck, but people

also really like our seafood, which we have flown in,says Sara Watson, who along with husband and chefEric owns and operates Mezzaluna. Fargo loves itsfood, and in the eight years weve been here we have

found it to be a really special place.
