    Tarnowski Hall

    The inspiration for the creation of TarnowskiHall came from a very kind and generous man,the late Otto Tarnowski. Otto was a ski lledand talented sheet metal craftsman in the

    Racine community. A World War II veteran,journeyman and inspired professional, Ottoand his wife Beverly have been longtimefriends of Gateway. Together, they providedsubstantial nancial support to build ourcommunities new manufacturing trainingcenter. Otto believed that only through education and training could young peoplend success, and that work was a cornerstone to a strong family. Otto passed awayon December 24, 2012. Tarnowski Hall stands as a tribute to Otto and Beverly for theirgenerous support of our college and community.

    I am so proud to welcome you to our SC JohnsoniMET Center. iMET stands for integratedManufacturing and Engineering Technologyand serves as our regions most advancedmanufacturing training center. As our economychanges so should our knowledge and skills inorder to succeed. With advanced manufacturingtraining in computer numerical control, robotics,programmable logic control, welding and muchmore, iMET is a catalyst for students and employersto create a vibrant future in southeast Wisconsin.

    Adding to this excitement is the regions firstindustrial design Fab Lab. One, out of a networkof 100 in the world, Gateways Fab Lab allowsengineers to design and create through rapidprototyping of industrial models to solve realworld problems. I want to extend a specialthank you to our business partners for theirsupport and commitment to education andeconomic prosperity.

    lab also serves as the home of the highly successful boot camp training programsin CNC machining, welding and fabrication and machine repair.

    Snap-On tool boxes Snap-On is located in Kenosha, WIand provides tools and tool storage for the manufacturingmarket. The programmable boxes, donated to theSC Johnson iMET Center visually manage tools at thePoint of Use. Visual Tool Control, VTC places the most oftenused tools in clear view and within the Strike Zone, (abovethe knees and below the shoulders). Reducing the need tobend and stretch for tools, reducing the chance for sprainsand strains.

    Miller welders - GMAW (mig) and GTAW (tig) are weldingprocesses that are widely used in industry. Other equipmentfor the welding program includes power brake, shear, sawsand support equipment. Miller Manufacturing is located inAppleton, WI and is a proud partner for welding programsacross the state.

    306 XTEN Quality and Measurement Lab

    Sponsored by XTEN Industries, in Kenosha, WI this quality control lab housesinstruction in precision measurement.

    Brown & Sharp coordinate measurement machine

    (CMM) - is a 3D device for measuring the physicalgeometrical characteristics of an object. The machinetakes readings in three degrees of freedom and displaysthese readings in mathematical form.

    Dorsey Optical Comparator uses the principles ofoptics for the inspection of manufactured parts. Themagnied silhouette of a part is projected upon thescreen, and the dimensions and geometry of the partare measured against prescribed limits.

    Transform round parts and form the metal to shape andprole a piece to certain specications and createthreading and holes.

    400 A & E Tools Classroom- Overlooking TarnowskiHalls exible manufacturing lab, this classroom willbe used to teach students participating in boot campand workforce training and professional developmentprograms. A& E is an 80 year old company locatedin Racine, WI. A & E manufactures high quality handtools for the automotive industry.

    401 This conference room seats 16 and overlooksTarnowski Halls Flexible Manufacturing Lab and isdedicated to Gateways partners contributing to theopening of the SC Johnson iMET Center.

    402 & 403 Poclain Hydraulics Classroom- Thisclassroom overlooking Tarnowski Halls FlexibleManufacturing Lab will be used to teach studentsparticipating in boot camp and workforce trainingprograms. This classroom also has the capability

    of being divided into two separate classroomsto accommodate different size groups. PoclainHydraulics is located in Racine, WI and produceshydrostatic transmissions.

    404 State of Wisconsin Bureau of Apprenticeship

    Standards The Bureau of Apprenticeship Standardsand Gateway Technical Colleges apprenticeshipprograms collaborate to match apprentices tolocal businesses in the construction, industrial/manufacturing, and service trades.

    100 LevelLobby The lobby serves as a gatheringspace for students and staff. Vending andcomputers are available for students andthe public.

    Auditorium - The auditorium is available for use bycommunity groups, and business industry and seats upto 85 people.

    High Bay Area The entry way to the engineeringclassrooms, the Industrial Design Fab Lab and TarnowskiHall is a multi-purpose area that is used for meetings,robotics competitions and career fairs.

    129 Mechanical Design classroom

    Mechanical Design program classes are offered in thisclassroom. The computers in the room are used to teachAutoCAD and Solidworks software. These software programsare used in Engineering Graphics (formerly called Drafting)and can create a prototype similar to those shown in thephoto. Engineering Graphics is used in classes such asMechanism, Elements of Machine D esign, Design Problems,Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing.

    130 Industrial Design Fab Lab

    The Industrial Design Fab Lab is a work space containinga variety of computer controlled tools that allow for themanufacture of nearly anything an individual can conceive.The concept was developed at MIT as a way to spur innovation.Students and industry professionals have the opportunity toconceptualize and design a product using 3D design software,print a prototype in the Fab Lab and have access to the exiblemanufacturing lab where it can be created to scale usingmachine tools, welding, and fabrication.

    The following equipment is located there:

    Roland GX-24 vinyl cutter This is a plotter that uses a knifeinstead of a pen. It is capable of either cutting or scoring a

    variety of materials with precise accuracy to create designs,signage, packaging, and assist in model building.

    Roland MDX-40A milling machine This 4-axis millingmachine allows users to quickly build high quality productprototypes. This machine suppor ts G code andNC programming.

    Roland 3D Scanner Using a laser, an object is scanned toexact tolerances, the data is converted into a le that usesSolidWorks CAD software, allowing for reverse engineering oradding unique shapes to a design.

    Epilog Helix laser/engraver Cutting and engraving to anaccuracy of 5/1000s of an inch, the laser can be used to createcomplex engravings or cut highly detailed pieces for modelsor other projects.

    Objet 3D Printer Using a process called additive

    manufacturing, layers of resin are added layer by layer tocreate a full three dimensional prototype directly from 3DCAD software like SolidWorks.

    A full complement of Snap-On hand tools are also availablein the lab.

    Equipment in the Industrial Design Fab Lab was made possible in

    part under award 06-79-05547 from the Economic Development

    Administration EDA, U.S. Department of Commerce. The Fab Lab

    concept was developed in partnership with First Technologies,

    133 Civil Engineering Technology ClassroomConstruction Sciences Room - The classroom is used forGateways Civil Engineering Technology-Highway (PublicWorks), Architectural-Structural Engineering Technology,Fresh Water Resources and Land Sur veying Technologyprograms. This classroom has equipment for teachingthe following courses:

    SCORE Southeast Wisconsin is a primaryresource available to small businessesto help then address today s challengesand oppor tunities. Representatives fromSCORE provide assistance with businessconcept development, business counseling,and mentoring to help small businessessucceed.

    134 Architecture/Land Survey classroom - Modernsurvey equipment including total stations and GPS unitsallow students to develop digital terrain models. BuildingInformation Modeling (BIM) using Revit/AutoCAD andbuilding inspections including the use of thermal camerasare also part of the architectural classes.

    133 &134 are set up for distance learning and digitallyconnect classrooms in Elkhorn and Janesville through ashared program with Blackhawk Technical College.

    135 Advanced Engineering

    Classroom Technology in this room includes:

    The NI Elvis platform Students simulate the theoreticalconcepts in Multisim, an industry-leading circuit simulationprogram. The prototype is built on the Elvis unit andcompare the simulation with real-world measurementswith LabVIEW SignalExpress.

    Labview Signal Express software provides the students12 of the most commonly used laboratory instrumentsincluding an oscilloscope (scope), digital multimeter(DMM), function generator, variable power supply, dynamicsignal analyzer (DSA), bode analyzer, 2- and 3-wire current-voltage analyzer, arbitrary waveform generator, digitalreader/writer, and impedance analyzer in a single softwareplatform. These virtual pieces of test equipment gatherreal data through the NI Elvis platform and display it on thecomputer screen and view data in an Excel spreadsheet.

    The four-channel, color digital oscilloscopes allow thestudents to capture and analyze signal wave forms. TheUSB connection on the scopes enables students to savethe wave forms to a USB drive for later use.

    231 BICSI Telecommunications, Belden Lab

    In this lab, students learn how to install, terminate, splice,test, and repair copper and ber optic cable using Belden,Corning, Fluke, Fujikura, 3M and other companys equipment.Our state of the art, BICSI approved training room is used toteach entry level telecommunications skills to high end highlevel certication classes using certication testers, OTDRs,and fusion splicers.

    Gateway Electronics and Electrical Engineering Technologystudents learn the skills necessary for careers in electricalengineering technology, biomedical engineeringtechnology, electrical engineering technology-sustainable

    energy systems, and electronics, using: Multi-meter Digi Trainers Oscilloscope Mind Sight computer programs

    The multimeters, oscilloscopes and other test equipment areused in conjunction with digitrainers to a llow the studentsto build and test low voltage electronic circuits in theclassroom. The digitrainer includes a solderless breadboard,power supply, push-buttons and switches to aid in thedesign and development of AC and DC circuits.
