Improving My English
In order to reach the point in my life where I can speak
English fl uently, I will always keep the following points in
mind when studying.
First of all, I will focus on the following when speaking
English.
11. I will relax and speak slowly and clearly with good
intonation. It is more important to speak slowly and
coherently than to speak quickly.
12. I will speak loudly. The main reason Japanese are not
understood when speaking English is because they
speak too quietly.
13. I will be confident. It's important to have the right
mindset when speaking English. English has a
language structure which is totally dif ferent from
that of my native tongue, and it is already an amazing
accomplishment that I can speak English, if even a
little.
14. I won't say "I can't speak English". If I say that, I will
believe it. Looking around me, I can already name
many things in English. I can speak English.
15. I won 't underestimate the impor tance of facial
expressions and body language. When communicating,
there are factors that are much more important than
speech.
16. I will smile and make eye contact.
17. I won't be afraid of making grammatical errors. I'll be
careful to use proper grammar when practicing, but
I'll be bold when I'm out in public.
18. Similarly, I won't be afraid of making pronunciation
mistakes. I will speak confidently, but I'll also
continue to work on my pronunciation.
19. I will speak logically when giving an explanation.
I'll state the conclusion first, then give reasons and
examples, and fi nally repeat the conclusion.
10. When speaking, I will ask "Do you understand what
I mean?" from time to time to make sure that what
I'm saying is being understood correctly. I'll use
simple, straight-for ward expressions and repeat
important details. Also, I will rephrase what I have
said using phrases like "I mean..." to avoid causing
misunderstandings.
11. I won't forget to have a sense of humor!
12. When listening, I will provide feedback to the speaker
by saying "Yeah", "Uh-huh", "Really?" When I don't

understand, I will ask "Can you repeat that?"
13. When reading or listening, instead of focusing on
words and sounds I don't understand, I will focus on
those that I do. I will make an effort to fi gure out the
parts that I didn't understand using context clues from
the parts that I did understand.
14. When reading or listening, I will believe that I
understand, regardless of whether or not I actually
do. When someone speaks to me, I will look into their
eyes and recite in my mind, "I understand you. I feel
you." I will do the same thing when reading. Strangely
enough, this will actually improve my understanding
of the topic matter.
Second, I will remember the following in my daily studies:
A) I won't forget to have fun.
B) I will visualize myself having a great life as someone
who can speak English. I will believe in my success.
C) I will try to get emotionally involved in the image of my
success and happiness.
D) I will talk to myself out loud in English for at least 5
minutes every day.
E) I will talk silently to myself in English whenever
possible - for example on the train.
F) I will talk silently to myself in English in bed, before I
go to sleep.
G) When I leave home, I ' l l make a point to wear
earphones, ready to listen to English texts.
H) I will carry around English learning tools so that I
can practice listening and "shadowing" at any given
moment.
I) Rather than using many text books, I will stick to one or
two, which I will concentrate on. Instead of letting the
information overwhelm me, I will intensely study the
information that I choose.
J) To improve my listening skills, I will do "shadowing
practice" while listening to texts I have previously
studied. Repetitive "shadowing practice" of texts I am
familiar with is the key to improvement.
K) I will travel abroad from time to time, or talk to
foreigners. This will give me a sense of how much
progress I have made and also stimulate my mind and
spirit.
L) I will seize ever y oppor tunity to communicate in
English.
64

M) When watching foreign movies or TV shows, I will use
English subtitles. If it's too hard, I'll watch them fi rst
with Japanese subtitles, and then switch to English.
If I have some spare time, I will do a fi nal run without
any subtitles.
N) I will rent DVDs of English TV shows from my
local video rental store as often as I can. I will enjoy
watching them with English subtitles. This is mostly
for fun, and I will continue to study the texts as well.
O) I will make sure I'm always in the middle of some
English book, even if I don't necessarily read every
day. I will pay attention to words I understand and not
to the ones I don't. I'll refrain from using a dictionary,
so that I can sit back and enjoy the book.
P) If I fi nd paperback novels too advanced for me, I'll pick
easier ones that don't require as much vocabulary.
Q) I will make a constant effort to learn more vocabulary
and grammar. I will be able to use at least high school
level vocabulary and junior high school level grammar.
R) I won't jump to advanced level material before learning
the basics fi rst.
S) When I have thoroughly grasped the basics, I will study
words and phrases I use most often at work or in my
personal life.
T) When studying, I will always be aware of the time and
speed. I'll use a stopwatch if necessary.
U) I will use a notebook to write down my study plans and
any future goals I wish to achieve through learning
English.
V) To check my skills, I will periodically take English tests
(Speaking & Writing, TOEIC, etc).
I will make continuous efforts to attain my dream future.
There is no end to studying English. Learning English is
a lifelong process and I will continue to apply myself even
after I have achieved my initial goals. Most importantly, I
won't forget to have fun along the way!

日本語の文章を読むとき、極端な強弱をつける人はま

ところが、先ほども述べたとおり、英語は単語や文章

expressions and body language. When communicating,
there are factors that are much more important than
speech.
6. I will smile and make eye contact.
7. I won't be afraid of making grammatical errors. I'll be
careful to use proper grammar when practicing, but
I'll be bold when I'm out in public.
8. Similarly, I won't be afraid of making pronunciation
mistakes. I will speak confi dently, but I'll also continue
to work on my pronunciation.

Improving My English
In order to reach the point in my life/ where I can speak
English fl uently, /I will always keep the following points
in mind/ when studying.||
First of all, /I will focus on the following/ when speaking
English.
1. I will relax and speak slowly and clearly/ with good
intonation. ||It is more important to speak slowly and
coherently/ than to speak quickly.
2. I will speak loudly. The main reason Japanese are not
understood when speaking English is because they
speak too quietly.
3. I will be confident. It's important to have the right
mindset when speaking English. English has a
language structure which is totally dif ferent from
that of my native tongue, and it is already an amazing
accomplishment that I can speak English, if even a
little.
4. I won't say "I can't speak English". If I say that, I will
believe it. Looking around me, I can already name
many things in English. I can speak English.
5. I won't underestimate the impor tance of facial

understand, I will ask "Can you repeat that?"
13. When reading or listening, instead of focusing on
words and sounds I don't understand, I will focus on
those that I do. I will make an effort to fi gure out the
parts that I didn't understand using context clues from
the parts that I did understand.
14. When reading or listening, I will believe that I understand,
regardless of whether or not I actually do. When someone
speaks to me, I will look into their eyes and recite in my
mind, "I understand you. I feel you." I will do the same
thing when reading. Strangely enough, this will actually
improve my understanding of the topic matter.
G) When I leave home, I'll make a point to wear earphones,
ready to listen to English texts.
H) I will carry around English learning tools so that I can
practice listening and "shadowing" at any given moment.
K) I will travel abroad from time to time, or talk to
foreigners. This will give me a sense of how much
progress I have made and also stimulate my mind and
spirit.
L) I will seize every opportunity to communicate in English.

Q) I will make a constant effort to learn more vocabulary and
grammar. I will be able to use at least high school level
vocabulary and junior high school level grammar.
R) I won't jump to advanced level material before learning the
basics fi rst.
S) When I have thoroughly grasped the basics, I will study
words and phrases I use most often at work or in my
personal life.
T) When studying, I will always be aware of the time and
speed. I'll use a stopwatch if necessary.
U) I will use a notebook to write down my study plans and any
future goals I wish to achieve through learning English.
