In-text advertising format for native Android apps

Industrial Project 234313 - Final

Team

− Erik Shani – Kontera’s supervisor & Product manager at Kontera since June 2010

− Omri Amarilio – undergraduate student at the Technion Computer-Science faculty since October 2008

− Amir Mizrachi – undergraduate student at the Technion Computer-Science faculty since October 2008

Goals

› Provide an SDK for Android apps developers for in-text advertisement embedding

› Developing a native Android framework for identifying relevant text in Android apps that is suitable for advertising and displaying ads within the application.

Methodology

• Study the Android applications domain (extensive research)• Create an in-text ad API for Android developers• Integrate with application and device APIs in order to extract relevant information/data• Integrate with current Kontera JS capabilities

Achievements

• Retrieving text from an external application (i.e. Twitter)• Communication with a remote server in the background (using worker threads)• Editing text in the external application• Making parts of text click-able so they execute out commands (i.e. light box) • Wide knowledge of Android applications development• In conclusion – achieving all of our goals

Example

• Integration into a Twitter application taken from Grand-Valley State University

Conclusions

• During our research we’ve discovered that due to limited resources in mobile devices, the Android platform keeps only the minimal data required in order to consume less of its own resources • The Android platform allows extended flexibility
