“On February 18th in Brooklyn, New York, my work was featured in a collaborative music/photo presentation.

“After studying my photos, Composer Stephen Sherman composed a piece of music for a string quartet with the title, Appalachian Polaroids.

“The quartet and I are now working on two more pieces for this performance. Not every photographer is honored with a piece of music inspired.”

Here is a link to this music piece.

Here is a PDF giving details of the performance site and more.

“Throughout my life I have experienced cultural diversity, and continue to travel between two worlds: the ‘hollers’ and hills of Kentucky, and the cities. I was born in Hazard, Kentucky, and raised primarily in a holler called Johnson’s Fork in Letcher County, where only mountain people had lived for generations. With the locals, my work has strictly followed word-of-mouth and personal introductions.”

Spotlight Award & Publicationwww.barbarabenderphotoart.com

“I am pleased to announce that my portfolio has been granted a Spotlight Award by Black & White Magazine and will be featured in the March/April issue. The images in the portfolio explore black-and-white in the truest sense of the word. There is an extremely restricted tonal range, limited to either pure white or pure black. There are no grey or mid-tones at all. Although the identity of the original subjects may not be readily apparent, the mood or gesture often remains intact.

“I am also thrilled that another portfolio, Elemental Rhythms, will be featured in Lenswork Extended #111, March/April 2014.”

Bender in LensWork and LensWork Extended #104Finding Magic in the Mundane

“I committed to making one finished photograph specifically for this project, each week, for 52 weeks. I did not allow myself to ‘borrow’ images from one week to cover another. I limited the location to my home, or within one mile of it. If traveling, I would shoot on hotel property. Still life set-ups would be allowed, provided the items were already in place. These restrictions would ensure that I’d practice seeing in ordinary places, while making photographs on a regular basis.”

McCollum in LensWork and LensWork Extended #106The Cocoon Series

“With so many layers surrounding it, I am always looking for ways to see the human figure with fresh eyes, recalling the challenge I learned from Beaumont Newhall in a class years ago to look to the deepest artistic expression of a photographic image. The body cocoon gave me such a new vision.”

In The Cocoon Series, photog-rapher E.E. McCollum artfully captures and transforms the human figure by using nylon tubing to encase the body. This series of black-and-white photographs, on display at The Art League Gallery is both mesmerizing and thought provoking.

“In almost every aspect, there is nothing benign in The Badlands. Everything is extreme – and the extremes manage to co-exist almost against the odds. Still, documenting the extremes would have been an easy and obvious task. Instead, I wanted to make a state-ment defying the ‘badness’ described by generations of settlers in the region for hundreds of years. For an artist, a naturalist, and for anyone seeking respite from the manufactured reality of cities, this is a place of immense inspiration – a very good place.”

Pets undeniably share one characteristic with their humans – both have personalities! It is a delight to see these two family members caught in the act of being so expressive of their unique identities. It is an indication of the personality of the photographer, too.

We always enjoy getting a chance to look at new work. In fact, about half of what we’ve published in LensWork comes from submissions that were originally unsolicited, that is to say, from readers and subscribers like you. We love giving exposure to people who are doing good work but are not plugged into the publicity machines that galleries and traditional publishers provide.

Our submission guidelines are available on our website. Please review these submission guidelines and then feel free to send in your work for consider-ation. Obviously, we can’t publish everything that is submitted, but we also can’t publish work that isn’t ever submitted! The best way to start is to send in the work and let us take a look. Thanks!
