How do we go from interpretation to implementation?

Our impression, feelings, perceptions of a city, most of which used to be invisible are now becoming visible.
With new tools at our hands, how do we designers better design for our cities?
‘InVisibleCities’ is a self-initiated, experimental urban research project aiming to explore a new design approach incorporating data-driven thinking.

Life Style
空虛時候的慰藉
覺得”揪甘心”
令人想特別路過的場所

“My Way” While walking in cities, what really matters? What do we care besides distance and time? Can way-finding be more than point A to B? Can it takes advantage of the city’s own characteristics?

What’s Next? What do people in Taipei really care? Who are the stakeholders and what are their incentives? Can it tie back to urban infrastructure/ management? What form would be the application?
“YouBike+” There are nearly 300 YouBike stations in the city, and few more hundreds are to install in the future. How to better facilitate the network? What can be added on top of the station, especially in its vacant hours? Is there a way to turn station-to-station from inconvenience to advantage?

with average number of empty docks
35 empty docksin total per station per station
Equals 42,000 TWD /day as car parks*; 420,000 TWD /day as street vendor lease*;*land value calculation: car park14m2, 60TWD /hr; street vendor 1000TWD/ m2 month
What’s Next? Who are the riders and how do they actually move around? How can we better utilize the vacant space? How do we facilitate a self-sustaining distribution system? How do we make it beneficial to all but also financially valuable?
“Passive Space Remake” Although people often complained that owning (or simply using) a space in Taipei is too costly, there are, in fact, plenty of under-utilized space scattered in our city. In a dense city like Taipei, where people flooding in and out everyday, or residing in small and compact neighborhoods, it is crucial to use our urban space smartly. The project is to identify passive spaces in the city and suggest more active use.

The passiveness and the vacuum existed for reasons. Not all space in city should be 24-hour active anyways.
But for those in highly populated area, are they are at their best use? What might be the alternatives?

But city is dynamic, people moves around during a day, therefore the needs of a place may vary at different times.
What about those places where are periodically populated?

What’s Next? What is the most needed in the areas? Can we add new program on top of the unused space? How can the new program improve the passiveness of the area? Will they be long-term or short-term? Non-for-profit or profitable? Who are the stakeholders?
‘InVisibleCities’ is a half-way manifesto, an open call for wider city innovation community to join together for better city making. We are keen to meet more data experts, urbanists, city innovators, designers, policy makers, and interest groups.
