Botanical garden of Eszterházy Károly University
The botanical garden belongs to Eszterházy Károly University in Eger (NE Hungary) and
the professional management is provided by the Department of Botany. The garden is situated
on Almagyar Hill, with an area of nearly 1 ha. Mainly the native flora of the Carpathian basin can
be found there. The living collection consisting of about 100 species of trees and 450 species of
herbaceous plants. The botanical garden is divided according to the vegetational regions of
Hungary, as seen on the map. The botanical garden is under local protection.
Moreover the botanical collection is extended by a number of sub-tropical and tropical plants
located in the Lajos Juhász Greenhouse (University Campus, Leányka str., building G).
The botanical garden is a member of Hungarian Association of Botanic Gardens and Arboreta
(MABOSZ).
A brief history of the gardenThe botanical garden was found by Dr. Suba János and his colleagues from the Department ofBotany in 1967. The first objective of the garden was to showcase the Hungarian Mountainsvegetation. The plants were collected from the natural habitats of Hungary and Slovakia or weregiven as presents from other botanical gardens and arboretums. The successful development of the flowering and well-managed garden was interrupted by years ofdecline due to financial problems. A long time passed till the further development started again: the full reconstruction of the garden took place between 2011 and 2015 under the framework of theEEOP (Environment and Energy Operational Programme, KEOP 3.1.2/09-11). The structure of thebotanical garden habitats, sidewalks and trails network has been re-designed and a new irrigationsystem has been introduced. Many new herbaceous plants and trees have been planted.
