SHANMUGAM MANJUNATH (1978-2005)

Manjunath, or Machaan as he was popularly known among his friends in IIM Lucknow, has

immortalized the core values that are ingrained in every student of IIM Lucknow – integrity, sincerity

and determination.

He was a terrific singer, full of verve and heart and performed as part of the campus band Three.Four.

Manjunath's courageous act of taking on fuel adulterators may have cost him his life, but also ensured

that the whole country woke up to the plight of those who fight corruption. His unfortunate death

caused an uproar amongst students across IIMs and IITs and in no time garnered unprecedented

unanimous nation-wide support.

The Manjunath Shanmugam Trust (MST) was formed soon after by members of the international IIM

alumni network, which fought to ensure justice prevailed with the trial being completed in a record nine

months. The efforts of several RTI activist working with the MST has resulted in the cabinet passing the

Public Interest Disclosures Bill, 2010 in Aug 2010, which will become a shield for whistle-blowers and

people who expose corruption and scams.

From a modest beginning in 1984-85,

operating out of a make shift

arrangement in the heart of Lucknow city,

IIM Lucknow has now transformed into a

world-class institute with multiple

campuses and numerous international

linkages.

Lord Chesterfield once famously said:

“The knowledge of the world is only to be

acquired in the world and not in a closet”.

With this philosophy, IIM Lucknow has

encouraged holistic learning among its

students. Beyond the walls of the

classrooms; over and above the

functional domains of b-school subjects;

IIM Lucknow has embraced diversity now

well reflected in its students and

illustrious alumni.

For 26 years, the flame of ambition,

determination and leadership, ignited at

IIM Lucknow, has been the candle in the

wind for our torchbearers. Many of them

have achieved unparalleled success in

t h e w o r l d ' s m o s t r e c o g n i z e d

organisations displaying enthusiasm,

level-headedness, commitment and

ethos. Others have built on the training

imparted at IIM-L, to initiate their own

ventures in fields as varied as education,

market research, music & film.

In the pages that follow, we showcase

these individuals who have left their

imprints on the world. This is by no means

an exhaustive list, rather a sampling of

the many achievers who have graduated

from this fine institution. For batches both

present and future, these stellar

examples will serve as a source of

inspiration, propelling them to the great

heights that the world has come to expect

of IIM Lucknow and its alumni.

We all slogged hard to keep pace with the rapid and

rigorous MBA program but what I truly cherish from my IIML

days is my time spent in Placecom, where the whole team

had an almost fanatical goal to get the best of the recruiters

in the world to IIML. I also had a great time as a part of our

rock band 3.4 Km along with a bunch of talented musicians

and it was an all time high to open for Parikrama at Manfest

The approach we adopted for analyzing and discussing different cases

in IIML was really handy in corporate life when faced with real life

problems. I could apply these learnings to analyze problems strategically

and in totality while appreciating different perspectives/ views. The lessons

in team work/ collaboration along with communication/ presentation skills

that I learnt in IIML were extremely useful in the daily corporate life

IIML played an extremely important role in the development of my personality as it was the first time I had stayed away from home. Our batch was extremely friendly hence even an introvert like me made friends easily. However, the most important lesson for me was the realization that money is not the barometer for determining brilliance, success, relationship and above all happiness. Having come from Mumbai, this was a big eye-opener and confidence booster for me in those days. The stint at IIML was one of the most pleasant experiences for me in this lifetime

I remember my good days with IIML with nostalgia: the initial

excitement of joining a premier B-school during my final year of

graduation; the guidance from my IIML seniors for getting through

the grueling 2-year power-packed PG program; the nervousness

during the 1st year’s Summer placements; the enjoyable days of

Manfest and finally the final-year placement sessions!

IIM-L is where I first learnt how to manage work & life. The

multiple priorities and high pressure, typical of today’s corporate

life, was in some measure experienced at IIM-L. The learning

journey was tough but a lot of fun also. I also found love at IIM-L

and Shobha and I are happily married batchmates!

IIM Lucknow has been the keystone of my career; the dual emphasis

which the Institute works with concentrates not only on providing

management related skills and knowledge, but also helps develop better

learning, analytical, and adaptive skills. IIML calls this "learning to learn"

and with the extensive demands on managers in the current

scenario, this skillset is very much required

SAMEER BHARGAVAClass of 1997

Beyond all the decision making frameworks and functional

The variety of opportunity that IIML brought with it meant that

diverse people created their own ways to experience the 2 years. With

every passing batch, the family of IIML is growing. We are no longer a

new kid on the block. Alumni strength can be felt across industries,

corporates and entrepreneurial ventures. I am confident that as an

institute we will create further milestones which all of us will be proud

The time spent at IIM- L was two of the most enriching and rewarding

Be open to change and be open to take on challenges. I feel lucky that I enjoy my job and look forward to meet Mr. Market every day. It would not have been possible without the IIML route - I entered the asset management industry via my first campus job at SBI Mutual Fund. I had a tough schedule at IIML - the fact that attendance was really necessary (what with surprise quizzes etc. and a small class size) and that I was also in the Placement Committee

Being an IIML alumni is always a great door opener & for me personally a great achievement. Even today, I wear this on my sleeve. It enables some extra non business conversation at most meetings & I use it to my advantage because it gets attention. An IIML tag is hugely aspirational & draws respect

Whenever I think of Lucknow and my stay at IIM, I am reminded of great fellow students and very approachable faculty, who never behaved like people sitting on a pedestal distributing knowledge but more like people who despite having more knowledge were ready to be challenged and debated with on all topics under the sun. I personally believe IIM had a tremendous influence on my career. Other than the knowledge of how businesses function I think the biggest benefit I got during my stay at IIM was that it fine tuned and prepared me for the business world

It’s been years since I passed out, but it still seems so fresh. Of

all the years spent in classes, it is those in Lucknow that I remember

the most. Our old campus, apartments that served as hostels, a

library situated elsewhere, and so on. Back then calling back home

was a walk to a PCO, long waits, and speed talk to save money.

Satellite TV hadn’t arrived, and PC had to be booted up from a disk

which kept getting corrupted. Our new campus was still a place

under construction and enroute were egg paranthas on the

highway dhaba. We’d roam the new campus to see the progress of

construction. Happily ours was the first batch whose convocation

took place from this new campus!

discussions which proved to be of great use in later professional life. For me IIM,

L provided the foundation for a career in finance and general management. I

am proud to be an alumni and with all the developments since we left the

campus, I am sure the institute will reach greater heights as it completes quarter

century of its founding

IIML was fabulous and laid the foundation to build a holistic understanding of business and its place in society. I benefited from an institution with its tremendous commitment and passion to enable learning with excellent faculty and fellow participants. Those were two intense years with lots of fun, work, growing up, lasting friendships and memories

The experience of working on organizing the various events that institute regularly holds gives a priceless experience of managing a complex program, complete with running to a budget and tight timeline while balancing a complex set of stakeholders. The discipline, the confidence and partner-facing skill sets developed through involvement in so many different areas both within and outside the curriculum were equally big takeaways if not bigger

The biggest learning from my IIML days has been the lack of

fear of failure.. L taught me its alright to fail, but unacceptable to

give up. This came about given the gruelling curriculum, the

smart people I studied with and the unstructured environment L

provides, especially when you try to juggle academics and being

a placecom member

IIML provided a structural shift to my thinking and actions.I came into contact with the kind of “real” business experiences we became familiar with as part of our learning process. Today, my mobile phone book contains numbers of numerous IIM L colleagues whose counsel and guidance I readily seek. I have consulted them on at least half a dozen times in the past 10 years, on crucial strategic “Go” / “No-Go” decisions concerning my professional and personal life. This has made a huge difference to where I stand today and where I can potentially be in the future..

My memories at IIM Lucknow cover the outstanding calm atmosphere, competitive young students, wonderful library, computer centre, classrooms, lush green campus and of course the highly caring teachers. IIM Lucknow has been my best educational experience and I will always cherish those 2 years

The things I remember most about my time at IIML

include the amazing talent all around me, professors

who took such personal interest in me, as a student and

individual and the great campus. In hindsight, I learned

as much, if not more, from interacting with my

classmates in projects, Index, Manfest etc., as from the

classroom

IIML was the period that helped most of us mature as professionals. If undergraduate days were the period of youthful enthusiasm, management studies helped make this enthusiasm more result oriented and clinical.
