AttivitĂ di ricerca / Research activities
Dr Giuseppe BARBIERI leads a research group involving Adele BRUNETTI (PhD, Researcher at ITMâCNR since 2012), three PhD students, a research contractor and two master students.
Energy, water recovery, green chemistry, blue economy are the main fields of focus of Dr BARBIERI research. All the activities are developed considering membranes and membrane operations as pivot of the theoretical, modelling and experimental investigations in membrane science, technology and engineering.
These activities are carried out in the framework of some projects funded/coâfunded by Public Organizations (European Commission; Italian Ministry of Instruction, University and Research; Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs; Regione Calabria) and industrial groups.
Hydrogen production from light hydrocarbons (e.g., methane steam reforming) (project funded by CNR and Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs), the upâgrading of H2 rich streams containing, e.g., CO that converted by means of water gas shift reaction (EUâGRACE and EUâDEMCAMER projects) produces more H2, hydrogen separation/concentration (EUâHYDROFUELER project) and the H2 purification (CO<10 ppm) âCO Cleanâupâ for H2 use in fuel cell applications (MIURâCAMERE project) are among the main processes studied. Membranes for PEM fuel cells and their mass transport and proton conductivity properties were also studied in the EUâLoLiPEM project. Gas and vapour separation with both polymeric (EUâNanoGlowa and EUâCapWa projects) and inorganic (ceramic and metallic) membranes is applied for fractionation of streams of industrial interest containing H2, CO, CO2, paraffins, olefins, etc. (project funded by EU, Technip Italy SpA, ENEL, Pantochim, Italcementi SpA, etc.).
Thermodynamic analysis, experimental work, mathematical modelling and simulation and related energetic and exergetic analysis of catalytic membrane reactors (for high and low temperature reactions) and other advanced membrane operations for both gaseous and liquid streams are the main research activities pursued also following the strategy of process intensification. Today, it is the best way for a sustainable growth.
Theoretical, modelling and experimental investigations in membrane science, technology and engineering:
Fundamental/basical issues such as
o Thermodynamics
ing. Giuseppe BARBIERI, PhD National Research Council of Italy â Institue on Membrane Technology
Membrane systems have to respect the thermodynamics law as any other chemical and physical system. A membrane reactor, for instance, operates under the action of the Le ChatelierâBraun law. This implies higher conversion owing to the product selective removal from the reaction volume.
The equilibrium of a membrane reactor depends on the temperature as a conventional reactor but the reaction pressure positively affect the conversion also for reaction characterized by an increase of the mole number. Therefore, operating under higher pressure favours the conversion and reduces the reactor volume.
o Mass transport in dense Pdâbase membranes, dense polymeric membranes, zeolite membranes
and other porous inorganic membranes, etc. as function of temperature, permeation driving force (transâmembrane pressure difference or its function), composition, etc. These studies also include all the elementary steps of the specific transport mechanism involved in the permeation through the membrane, what happens in the porous layer supporting the membrane and in the films adjacent the membrane itself or, in other words, the concentration gradients (better known as concentration polarization). In membrane distillation also the temperature gradients responsible of the soâcalled temperature polarization is analysed. In collaboration with ITMâCNR Colleagues, the sorption and diffusivity of gas molecules in selective membrane layer are investigated and then used in other studies.
Pdâbased membrane permeation was modelled and permeance reduction on membrane surface, owing to concentration gradients as well as inhibition by CO adsorption, was quantified. Graphs show these reductions as a function of temperature, pressure, composition, membrane thickness, etc. The sorption of some species such as CO2 was identified as responsible of the high selectivity of a zeolite membrane. o Membranes and Membrane modules
Polymeric mixed matrix membrane for gas separations and for CO2 photoreduction
Zeolite membranes for CO selective oxidation
Polymeric hollow fibres
Membrane modules for flat sheet membranes
Tubeâinâtube membrane modules for tubular/capillary membrane
Tubeâandâshell membrane modules for polymeric hollow fibres and capillaries
Titania or C3N4 loaded nafion polymeric were developed for reducing CO2 in fuels by using the typical methodology of phase inversion. Other membranes were prepared loading the polymeric solution with different fillers and polymers. NaY zeolite membranes were prepared by a secondary growth method where seeding and the next growth of zeolite layer were split in two separate phases. Specifically, the zeolite nanocrystals seeding, the most significant step, was tuned measuring the flux decay and giving it the extent of seeding progress. Polyimmide was/is utilized for dense hollow fibre membrane. Membrane module design and built is a fundamental activity in membrane research. In fact, membrane performance are measured utilizing membrane modules; therefore, geometry and flow patterns are taken into account in the development of membrane module in addition to any other input.
Even though filler segregation was observed, the membrane resulted photocatalytically active, showing results among the best present in the open literature. Zeolite catalytic membranes were able to reduce CO, present in rich H2 streams, from 1% (10000 ppm) to 10â20 ppm. Membrane modules for different membrane geometry (tubular, capillary, hollow fibre) and flow configuration (cross flow, coâcurrent, counterâcurrent) were designed taking into account the needs of membrane module modelling, better understanding of performance of the membrane investigated. This design considers the fluidâdynamics and pursues the reduction of concentration gradients, byâpass volumes, etc...
o Membrane reactors, also catalytic for
ing. Giuseppe BARBIERI, PhD National Research Council of Italy â Institue on Membrane Technology
Hydrogen production by steam methane reforming, CO2 (dry) methane reforming (utilizing packed bed membrane reactors)
Hydrogen upgrade, i.e., water gas shift (utilizing packed bed membrane reactors)
Hydrogen purification, i.e., selective oxidation of CO present in H2 rich streams (utilizing catalytic membranes)
CO2 photocatalytic reduction by photoâcatalytic membranes
This activity focuses on the membrane reactor as a whole including, all together, the membrane separation (and concentration and temperature profiles, if any), reaction (also catalytic) and the effects of the temperature, permeation driving force, feed composition, etc.
Water gas shift industrially operates with a highâtemperature and lowâtemperature stages. One stage only is enough when Pdâbased membranes are used: the hydrogen removal allows a conversion higher than the thermodynamics one of a conventional reactor. The membrane reactor can operate in the highâtemperature range and with faster kinetics too. The second (lowâtemperature) reactor is no longer needed.
o Membrane gas permeation
Hydrogen separation and purification, also a PEM fuel cells grade, using Pdâbased, zeolite and polymeric membranes
CH4 separation from natural gas and bioâgas (utilizing polymeric and zeolite membranes)
CO2 separation/capture from simulated industrial power plant, cement factory, etc., flueâgas waste streams (the feed streams also includes water vapour) (utilizing polymeric and zeolite membranes)
Separation/concentration of gas mixtures also of industrial interest
Longâterm (years) separation and identification of the method for membrane performance restoring
High grade hydrogen separated with membranes was directly fed to a PEM fuel cell and no PEMâFC reduction performance was measured. Performance of thermal rearranged membranes was twice restored to its initial value after decay happed during the years.
o Membrane condensers
Membrane condensers is a new technology for recovering water from an industrial flue gas stream (power plant stacks, paper mills, cooling tower, etc.). It uses hydrophobic porous membranes which guarantee a low pressure drop through the membrane layer and good water recovery.
Membrane unit operations
Separation and conversion to be effective, in addition to the operating conditions, require a specific membrane area (eventually catalyst amount) depending on the feed flow rate. Therefore, the membrane units have to be designed taking into account the chemical composition of the feed stream and its variation in the unit, the temperature, pressure, etc. and the fluidâdynamics too. These researches need to be developed having clearly in mind the mathematical dimension of the specific membrane systems under investigation. The membrane system can be described by a 0âD, 1âD etc. â first or second order â mathematical model. Dimensionless numbers help us in discriminating on the mathematical dimension of an appropriate membrane system description.
Membrane performance (selectivity and flux) is measured in apparatus that can be described by 0âD (first characterization) or 1âD/second order for investigating the concentration gradients eventually present. 1âD and/or 2âD models are utilized for analysing a separation unit or a membrane reactor. In fact, concentration profiles are, as expected, present along the membrane length and a distributed parameters model is mandatory in these cases.
Membrane separation capacity (of gas separation, reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, membrane contactors, membrane distillation, membrane reactors, membrane bioâreactors, etc.) was evaluated as a

function of membrane properties (selectivity and permeance) and energy required (pressure difference) in terms of, e.g., purity and recovery of the target species.
Crossâcuttings
The innovation passes through a new technology able to meet the requirements of the modern society. High efficiency, high environmentalâfriendly impact, high energy saving, higher safety, modularity, control, sustainability, reliability, etc. no solvents or other dangerous materials, are met by membrane technology. In this direction, some parameters such as, for instance, energy and/or mass intensity, foot print, improvement of the performance of the membrane unit with respect to traditional systems are also evaluated.
Energy intensity and mass intensity of a membrane reactor was evaluated 40 and 35% higher than that of a conventional system.
Water gas shift operates with a membrane reactor has a volume 10 times lower than the whole traditional current process.
