PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The contract for the Pristina-Hani i Elezit Motorway was signed between the Bechtel-ENKA General Partnership (BEGP) and the Ministry of Infrastructure of the Government of Kosovo in July 2014. The contract was an EPC contract and BEGP was responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction of the overall project.
It was BEGP’s second project in Kosovo. The motorway project is part of the South–East Europe Core Road Network, in which it is referred to as Route 6. The project crosses Kosovo from north to south, linking to Pristina in the north and stretching south as far as Hani i Elezit on the border with North Macedonia. The motorway is expected to have significant strategic and economic benefits. Kosovo is connected to Skopje and has access to Corridor 10, facilitating its trade with the rest of the world. The economic benefits arel not be limited to Kosovo.
The motorway is part of a European network of roads and is expected to contribute to economic integration throughout the region. The project envisaged the construction of 65 km of 2x2 carriageway motorway, designed in three stages. The motorway had been designed in accordance with Trans-European Motorway (TEM) standards as well as Croatian standards, and construction works had been done in accordance with the 2011 general technical requirements (GTR) of the Croatian Road Authority.
UNIQUE CHALLENGES
Alignment of the Route 6 Motorway Section 3 crosses many mountainous terrains and cliffs. Due to the complex geology on the terrain and deeper soil investigation requirements, geotechnical investigations are being carried out with complete attention by a number of teams performing extensive investigations. 19 million m3 of excavation with deepest point 62 m and 11 million m3 of embankments with highest point 24 m were performed during the construction.
ROUTE 6 PRISTINA - HANI I ELEZIT MOTORWAY PROJECT ROUTE 6 PRISTINA - HANI I ELEZIT MOTORWAY PROJECT
13 bridges, totaling 8 km were constructed with 1,777 precast, prestressed, posttensioned and hybrid type of beams. 312 thousand m3 of concrete and 70 thousand meter of piles were placed during the construction of bridges. Due to challenging and mountainous terrain, a 5.75 km meter long Lepence Bridge was constructed along a deep narrow valley accommodating Lepence River and Souther Part of Route 10 Railway Track Line. Design and construction of the bridge including very detailed geotechnical investigation is completed in 18 months.
Due to the complex geology on the terrain and deeper soil investigation requirements, geotechnical investigations, including 16,000 meter of boreholes, were carried out with complete attention by a number of teams performing extensive investigations. 200 thousand meter of active and passive anchors with different thickness of shotcrete works have been performed in order to stabilize deep cut slopes along the alignment.
Climate conditions were of a big concern. During March 2016, despite the heavy rainfall, the project team proceeded with its construction works associated with utility relocation as well as earthworks, structures, drainage, surveying, finishing, and manufacture & operations departments.
Utilities along the project were also one of the challenges. The utility lines had been investigated and identified on site. There existed high voltage lines, power lines and various sewage, water supply and irrigation lines. The design and relocation of some utility crosses underneath the motorway had been completed while others had commenced. 350 utility lines have been relocated and handed over to local authorities and service providers on behalf of the Employer.
ENKA SCOPE OF SERVICES
ENKA, according to the contract, designed, executed and completed the construction works. ENKA, as the Design/Build Contractor, was responsible for completion of the design in accordance with the required European Standards and Specifications.
The number of direct hire personnel reached 3,353 at its peak, including citizens of 13 different countries, citizens of Kosovo made up 80% of the total. It is one of ENKA’s goals to build a strong quality culture on the project and train the personnel to ensure that quality and safety are part of their everyday activities. Consequently, BEGP had provided all the personnel working on the project with training in safety and quality.
In addition to completed Pristina-Hani I Elezit Motorway, Employer requested to incorporate 2 interchanges and 1 overpass to the BEGP’s scope. At 28 May 2019, Along with the request of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the term of completion of Contract for construction of Pristina-Hani I Elezit Motorway is extended from 01.06.2019 until 01.12.2020. • The Osman Gazi Bridge Project is located in one of the most seismically active regions in the world. Since the project alignment intersects with the North Anatolian Fault Line, the design of the structures is of special importance. Especially South Anchorage Block and South Approach Viaducts represent the initials in Turkey in terms of civil engineering.
• South Anchorage Block and South Side Span Pier were designed by enabling rectangular shoring system to work together with multi-cell shoring system and compatible with the shape of integrated structure. The shape of the plan view of the shoring system looks like a guitar. This shoring design is unique not only in Turkey but also in the world.
• Diaphragm walls are implemented as a Box-Type Deep Foundation System under the foundations of South Approach Viaducts. Since the location of the project crosses the North Anatolian Fault Line and it lies within the secondary fault zone, special techniques were used for design and construction of diaphragm walls in order to install continuous horizontal reinforcement, which is quite different from the traditional methods. Therefore, the application of the diaphragm wall with continuous horizontal reinforcement is used for the first time in Turkey.

LOCATION:Rreshen - Kalimash, Albania
OWNER / CLIENT: General Roads Directorate of the Government of Albania - GRD
PROJECT DURATION:Oct 2006-Oct 2010
CONTRACT TYPE:Construction & Design Management
CONTRACT VALUE:US$ 1.1 Billion
SIGNIFICANT FEATURES /ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
• The largest public contract ever signed in Albania
• Reduces transportation time from 8 hours to 2 hours
PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThis project is the largest public contract ever signed in Albania. Undertaken by ENKA and Bechtel in September 2006 the Rrëshen-Kalimash Motorway Project is a key connection between Durres Port, Albania’s primary harbour on the Adriatic Sea, and Kosovo.
The 61 km motorway crosses the mountainous northern region of Albania, linking the cities of Rrëshen and Kalimash, and is divided into three sections. Its designers are Scetauroute (France) for Sections 1 and 3, and Italconsult (Italy), for Section 2. Section 1 is an 18 km long stretch from Rrëshen to Reps, section 2 is 27 km long and travels from Reps to Thirra, section 3 connects Thirra and Kolshi and is 15 km long. At Mount Runes, at an altitude of 1,858 m, the construction includes a 5.5 km long double bore tunnel.
In addition to the many economic and social benefits, from the construction of this Motorway, the transportation duration between Tirana and Kosovo border is reduced from 8 hours to 2 hours.
UNIQUE CHALLENGES
The most challenging part of the whole corridor was the segment between Rrëshen and Kalimash, which is around 61 km long. Before the motorway, transportation was provided by poor old mountain road and travel time was eight hours. The Rrëshen - Kalimash Motorway’s main purpose is to serve as a faster and safer route through the mountainous region.
Difficult terrain conditions and harsh climate conditions were two big challenges. To cross this difficult terrain, bridges, viaducts and tunnels were designed and constructed. Due to the 800 m of overburden on top of the tunnel, it was not possible to reach anywhere across the tunnel alignment except the entrance and exit locations. In order to reach portals of the tunnel, 17 km of service road were constructed. This service road was closed for 3 months in the year due to the harsh weather conditions. The total service road constructed for this project is 92 km.
In addition to difficult terrain and harsh climate conditions, geological conditions were not stable and continuous throughout the tunnel and motorway alignment. This enforced engineers to use more than one method during construction.
Despite the difficult conditions, the project was completed successfully and the travel time is reduced from eight hours to two hours. In addition to the great amount of travel time saved, the motorway enabled a safe means of travel in the region. This new route will serve to stimulate the economy in Albania’s north-eastern region.
ENKA SCOPE OF SERVICES
The Motorway is designed as dual carriageways of 2X3.75 m, supplemented with 2-meter emergency shoulder lanes. The major work items comprise of 34 million m3 of excavation, 13 million m3 of earth filling, 0.5 million m3 of concrete, 1.6 million tons of subbase and cement treated base and 0.45 million tons of asphalt. The construction of bridges and viaducts at an altitude of 5 km in the challenging mountainous terrain of Albania is included in the contractual works. At Mount Runes, at an altitude of 1,858 m, construction includes a 5.5 km long double bore tunnel.

• Links Croatia and its touristic destinations to Pan-European Transportation Corridor
• Honored with the 2004 Croatian Contractor Safety Award
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This important motorway project’s total length amounts to 156 km and consists of two separate sections. Section 1, the 13 km Bregana-Jankomir motorway, is a four-lane link from the capital city Zagreb to the border of Croatia and Slovenia, and was opened to circulation in December 2000. The other section, the 143 km Bosiljevo-Sveti Rok motorway, linking central Croatia to the Dalmatian Coast, opened in July 2004.
The motorway is considered vitally important as it provides the principal link between the Zagreb region in central Croatia and the Dalmatian coast. With this motorway, Croatia’s Dalmatian coast is now integrated with Europe’s central and western highway network.
The project was an enormous success. ENKA and Bechtel, who had undertaken the turnkey construction of the motorway in April 1998, completed the project 14 months ahead of schedule, with 4,000 workers employed at the peak of the construction. The project is further distinguished for winning the 2004 Croatian Contractor Safety Award, as it was successfully realized without any compromise in quality or safety.
ENKA assisted client to facilitate US EXIM Bank and OPIC financing for the project.
UNIQUE CHALLENGES
Habitat fragmentation occurs when human-made barriers such as roads, railroads, canals, electric power lines, and pipelines penetrate and divide wildlife habitat. Of these, roads have the most widespread and detrimental impacts. To decrease this impact, in Bregana-Zagreb-Dubrovnik Motorway, 6 wildlife crossings were constructed.
ENKA also determined 70 places of sinkholes on the alignment and adopted its construction methodology to cross over them considering all environmental aspects.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Gerede-Ankara and Ankara Peripheral motorway project is one of the largest infrastructure development projects in Turkey. The total length of the motorway is 230 km. It forms a significant part of the Trans-European motorway (TEM). As a major link to the Trans-European Motorway connecting Europe with Iran, the motorway is vital for transporting goods to and from Middle-Eastern markets. The six- to eight-lane high-speed toll way was built in two sections. The first section, a six-lane, 115-kilometre segment, connects the capital, Ankara, with the town of Gerede; the second is an eight-lane, 115 km beltway circling Ankara. It goes through terrain with very difficult and complex geological formations and has been designed in accordance with the highest world standards and specifications.
The project has been executed with a peak manpower of 6,296. This includes the resources and expertise of local contracting companies employed as subcontractors. Plant and equipment to the total value of US$ 130 Million has been used on the project. Resulting highway system is critical to Turkey’s future economic standing, providing the final link for freight and other road traffic between Istanbul, Turkey’s European port, and Ankara. The Ankara-Gerede Motorway demonstrates our ability to provide everything from crushed rock to sophisticated financing for successful completion to Client requirements.
ENKA assisted the client to facilitate US EXIM Bank financing for the project.
UNIQUE CHALLENGES
Building the motorway was a challenge. In some sections the road reached heights of 1.5 km above sea level and yet our team excavated more than 163 million m3 of earth and rock. At peak, excavation reached 6.5 million m3 on August 1990. There was 16.2 million m3 of embankment, and 4.7 million m3 of embankment was accomplished as a peak on August 1990. At the same time, 1.24 million m3 of concrete was poured for the project and 107 thousand of ton rebar were installed, which includes 63 overpasses and underpasses, 25 bridges and viaducts and 560 box culverts. Most of the bridges are of standard design consisting of concrete piers and precast/prestressed concrete U-beams. 5.1 million tons of asphalt was placed and over 332 thousand tons of asphalt was the record on August 1991. The quantity of crushed aggregate was exceeded on 31 million tons.
The alignment traversed rugged terrain, in some places reaching heights of 1.5 km above sea level. Our team mobilized almost 1,500 pieces of heavy construction equipment to accomplish work under difficult weather conditions, including rain that turned fresh excavations into lakes.
Our team of international professionals brought the following experience and capabilities to the Ankara–Gerede Motorway project:
• Complex, megaproject delivery• Maintaining schedule while traversing remote, rigorous terrain• Recruitment, training, and maintaining of a large local workforce and deployment of mobile camps• Coordination between multiple work sites • Timely handling of significant quantities of excavation, backfill, concrete and steel at multiproject locations• Movement of heavy equipment as necessary
ENKA SCOPE OF SERVICES
The alignment forms a significant part of the Trans-European Motorway (TEM). This part of the Motorway system passes between Gerede and Ankara and around the city of Ankara. It goes through terrain with very difficult and complex geological formations and has been designed in accordance with the highest world standards and specifications. ENKA has executed this project with a peak manpower of 6,296. This includes the resources and expertise of local contracting companies employed as subcontractors.
Within the integrated JV, ENKA provided onsite management and supervision, engineering, cost and schedule control, procurement, quality assurance/control, testing and startup, and environmental mitigation. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Sheremetyevo International Airport, one of the largest international airports in the Russian Federation, in addition to various Russian airlines, also serves more than 40 foreign carriers. Sheremetyevo Airport’s principal carrier is Aeroflot Russian Airlines, Russia’s largest air carrier, for which Sheremetyevo serves as the base. Initially, the airport had two terminals, Sheremetyevo 1 and Sheremetyevo 2, providing services for domestic and international routes. OAO AEROFLOT decided to build a third terminal to serve as Aeroflot’s and its alliances’ international terminal. Terminal 3 has a carrying capacity of up to 12 million passengers annually, and with the terminal in operation, Sheremetyevo International Airport complex has reached a total carrying capacity of 3,800 passengers per hour, combining arrivals and departures. ENKA was awarded the turnkey design and build contract by JSC TERMINAL in June 2005.
The terminal building consisted of a six-floor reinforced concrete building. The footprint of the building is 52,000 m2 and a total construction area is 170,000 m2. The height of the terminal building is 38.5 m, and the roof has a steel structure dome with a diameter of 66 m and a steel main arch with canopies weighing more than 1,800 tons. The building’s facade is composed of glazing, aluminum composite and natural stone. Apart from the terminal building, major work in the contract included an apron area of 374,000 m2; a multi-story car park for 4,000 cars; a control tower; 12 fixed passenger bridges; various car and bus parks; external facilities, such as a water treatment plant and water supply lines, an MV switch room; infrastructure, including high voltage cable lines, sewage lines, fiber optic cable ducts; construction of the aircraft refueling system, and hard and soft landscaping. Check-in and passport counters and the lounge furniture were also included in the contract work.
UNIQUE CHALLENGES
• As the existing airport facilities were in operation throughout construction, extra special care had to be taken with regard to safety, environmental protection and security.
• The project was conducted with due diligence, taking into consideration compliance with Russian norms and also in accordance with the international (IATA) standards on design and engineering.
• Supply and installation of all of the existing utilities (including provision of power, cold & hot water supply) beyond the site borders were also included in the General Contractor’s Scope of Works.
• The refueling system and its connections were included in the General Contractor’s Scope of Works and all works including installation, testing and commissioning were conducted while the main systems of the airport was operational for other terminals.
• Permanent flyovers and access roads to and from the terminal and construction of all connections were conducted without any disturbance to the existing traffic to/from the running terminals.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
As a prime contractor ENKA began the construction of the stadium in 2006 and completed in 2009. To meet a tight schedule (three years) for erection works of the five-star arena over 1,600 people worked on site at peak times.
Turn-key construction of UEFA Elite Class stadium in Donetsk, Ukraine for 52,667 visitors, of which 3,680 are VIPs. The Stadium is an oval shape with an inclined roof. Inside the Stadium there are restaurants, bars, cafes, fast food facilities, a sports center, Club Museum and Shops.
The eye-catching stadium was designed by Arup Sport, which was the creative and inspirational force behind some of the world’s greatest arenas, such as the City of Manchester Stadium (Manchester, England), Allianz Arena stadium (Munich, Germany), the new stadium of Valencia CF (Valencia, Spain), Sydney Football Stadium (Sydney, Australia), Beijing National Stadium (or the Bird’s Nest in Beijing, China) etc. The total project budget was US$ 400 million.
CAPACITY• The total seating capacity of the stadi-
um is 52,667.
• There are 290 seats for the media, of which 152 are for journalists and 138 seats for TV commentators (a combi-nation of 46 commentary boxes).
• A total of 196 places and seats for peo-ple with disabilities and their carers (104 and 92, respectively).
• The stadium’s 44 corporate boxes can accommodate a total of 915 people.
• Altogether 180 media representatives can always feel at home at the arena’s spacious Conference Room.
• All the restaurants, bars and cafés at the stadium combined, total 1,830 covers.
• The stadium has more than 1,000 car parking spaces (245 of which are un-derground).
UNIQUE CHALLENGES
Set within the beautiful Leninsky Komsomol Park, this stunning new home for FC SHAKHTAR has become a new symbol for Donetsk city, while providing an unforgettable match experience for spectators.
Its bowl design offers a high degree of comfort, as well as improved viewing quality. Immediately adjacent to the seating areas are a range of facilities catering for every fan’s needs. In addition to adhering to Ukraine’s codes and standards, the stadium’s design meets the most current internationally recognized safety standards. The roof includes a large area of translucent sheeting material to improve daylight and sunlight penetration and promote improved natural turf-growing conditions. Furthermore, large open areas are incorporated into the perimeter of the lower-tier concourse to enable cross ventilation of the pitch. The external elevation of the building provides a seamless glazed facade and a high degree of transparency to the exterior of the building.
The stadium combines an elegance of form with simplicity of materials. It has become a landmark stadium for world class players and a worldwide audience. The stadium’s conceptual design was developed to meet the specific requirements of the club for a natural playing surface, a seating capacity for 51,500 spectators, qualification for UEFA elite status, VIP suites with segregated viewing areas and underground VIP parking, as well as additional facilities such as a club museum, a club shop, a cafeteria and a health club. During the construction, considerable de-watering works were carried out to reduce the level of the underground water table. These were followed up with piling works to improve the load bearing capacity of the soil by using 400 mm x 400 mm friction piles. The tiers comprised a total of 3,400 pre-cast concrete elements. The total amount of concrete used in the works amounted to 120,000 m3. The roof is a three dimensional, structurally efficient design that appears to float above the building. The shape inclines towards the south, resting on a dozen 60 m long steel support trusses that were manufactured and erected by Çimtaş and maneuvered with a giant, 600-ton mobile crane, able to lift steel structures in excess of 230 tons. These 12 steel support trusses designed and manufactured by Mero-TSK have a combined weight of 4,000 tons and carry the space-frame structure of the roof.

ENKA and Norway’s Clean Energy Group have been awarded the rights to develop, construct, own and operate the 433 MW Namakhvani HPP Cascade Project in Georgia. A perpetual build-own-operate agreement has been signed with the Government of Georgia. The project comes with a 15-year power purchase agreement with the Government of Georgia, backed by a state guarantee for eight months of the year (September through April). Amounts generated in excess of the guarantee, as well as any power generated following the expiry of the power purchase agreement, will be sold in the domestic market or exported. As part of its Association Agreement with the EU, Georgia is committed to developing a transparent hourly day-ahead balancing market for electricity by 2020.
Georgia will play an important role in the planned integration of power systems and energy trading between Georgia, Turkey, Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia.
ENKA SCOPE OF SERVICES
ENKA will build the Namakhvani HPP Cascade Project as the EPC Contractor. Basic/Tender design, developed earlier by Studio Pietrangeli has been further developed by Temelsu and reviewed by Stucky. Construction is expected to start in 2020. The 433 MW Namakhvani HPP Cascade Project encompasses two separate HPPs on the Rioni River: the Lower Namakhvani HPP (333 MW) and the Upper Namakhvani HPP (100 MW). In addition, approximately 30 km of road, which will be submerged by the reservoir, will be relocated.
