It is indeed a privilege to contribute to

this, the third SA Tuli breeder’s journal

at a time when more and more the

Tuli is being recognised for what it has

to offer to cattle producers the world

over. During the course of the past

year record prices have been paid for

both Tuli bulls as well as females, and

the breed is nicely poised for greater

recognition of the unique traits it

processes while at the same time it is

readily accepted by both farmers and

feedlot operators alike.

I believe that the Tuli would have made

much quicker progress in South Africa if the red

meat industry was as prescriptive as it is in many

other parts of the world. Not only is the breed

indigenous and poll, but it has a top quality

carcass which has been proven in carcass and

meat quality research the world over. Amongst

other carcass traits the Tuli boasts a higher eye

muscle area to body weight ratio than many other

recognised carcass breeds. We as Tuli breeders

need to market the carcass quality merits of the

Tuli more vigorously and become more involved in

carcass competitions across the country.

Our breeders have made huge strides in

improving the bottom end of the breed over the

years and this is evident especially with regard to a

trait which until fairly recently was only considered

important for easy of handling, namely disposition

or temperament. Research on the effect of

temperament on growth and carcass quality

makes for very interesting reading and bodes well

for the Tuli as an indigenous breed with a great

disposition.

1. Afstand in ‘n kurwe lyn gemeet in mikrons2.

Hierdie drie parameters is net voorbeelde.

(Grafiek 2)

Grafiek 1: Telling in miljoen per milliliter

Grafiek 2: % lewendige sperma

Aantal strooitjies

P1= deel net na die kleurprop.

P2= middelste deel van die strooitjie.

P3= Deel teen die watteprop.

“Sperm Vision Tested semen”,

By die kraal word in ten volle toegeruste mobiele laboratoriums gewerk.

4. Semen word in gekontrolleerde omgewing(inloop koelkamer), in strooitjies verpak en in ‘n gestandardiseerde omgewing in vries-banke gevries.

(soos hierbo uiteengesit)

My name is Danne Cranor and my family and I raise cattle here in Texas. We actually live in Williamson County,

which is the county just to the north of Austin, but we run cattle in many of the counties around south-central Texas. Our operation consists of approximately 9000 acres of primarily leased land at 29 different locations, and at present we have nearly 400 mother cows. Our pastures truly reflect the geography of south-central Texas with more rough, rocky and brushy land called the Hill Country to the west, and more fertile and somewhat flatter rolling plains-like terrain to the east. Even our eastern places will often contain a lot of brush so our average stocking rate is usually around one head per ten acres with exceptions either way depending on the particular pasture. Our cattle operation, called Cranor Cattle Company, has been and is strongly Brahman and Bos Indicus-cross rooted due to the fact that the Zebu type cattle thrive in our normally harder country and need less care than most Bos Taurus animals require. We have and have had a great variety of English and Continental breeds come through our enterprises with varying degrees of success through the years. They are for the most part fine for the bulls, but we have found that the cows need to have the Bos Indicus in them to do the best in this environment. The weather where we are at is usually a little more on the dry side with extremely bad droughts usually being broken by an extended period of nearly too much precipitation or a big rain event like a hurricane coming out of the Gulf of Mexico. We also tend to be considered a

Hello Fellow Tuli Breeders,

hotter climate with summer temperatures reaching 110 degrees Fahrenheit or more on many days, but the extreme opposite can come in the winter with 10 degrees or less possible some years. Our type of cattle must thrive in the hot and dry conditions, but they must also be able to withstand those very cold, icy, and snowy times that often occur too. Besides straight Brahman/Zebu, Brafords and the other Brahman derived American Breeds have been the best cattle in our opinion for this area if you are not going to pamper them. Even though Texas is the birthplace of the Brahman breed, there is among many people a large bias against cattle that have too much ear, leather, or “humps“. Zebuine cattle are said to be of bad temperament and of poor meat quality in some circles, and unfortunately those are where a lot of the buyers are coming from. Removing that Bos Indicus look from the market oriented cattle without removing the tropical type breed benefits needed and the hybrid vigor is one big reason we are so excited about the Tuli. I personally became familiar with the Tuli and other Sanga breeds back in the 1980s when I began to investigate and study the African cattle breeds. In the 90s I really started looking into Tulis with the advent of the internet and all the information out there. Around ten years ago, we looked at some Tuli cattle on different ranches and at livestock shows and really liked what we saw. In 2003, a friend of mine who was a rancher and an order buyer started getting my father and I some half Tuli X Brahman, Beefmaster, Braford, Braunbray, and Santa Gertrudis females and we were hooked on the qualities of the cattle. In 2006 I bought my first full blood Tulis and we have been going through a grading up program since then. We also been doing some crossbreeding with our ½ Tuli and ½ Brahman F1

hybrid and a ¼ Tuli, ¼ Hereford, ¼ Charolais, and ¼ Brahman composite doing very well amongst others we have been trying. A couple of the most important things we have noticed is that the Tuli breed passes on that perfect udder to even the crossbred females, and that the Tuli and Tuli X can do just as good as the Brahman and Zebu-cross on some poor and harsh pasture. The last bulls we purchased were from (Carroll)Shelby Tuli up in northeastern Texas and we are in the process of buying some more purebred bulls and maybe females at this time. I also have noticed that I seem to get more inquiries from people about Tulis as time goes on, so the word seems to be getting out more and more. You can see in our ranching operation being so spread out that we have to have cattle that can take care of themselves, have very little or no supplemental feeding, and be able to calve unassisted. From what we have seen in our Tuli cattle, there is no reason that raisers seeking a moderate sized and easily managed beef breed should not look to the Tulis as an option. Since I was a kid I have loved those sometimes rangy, long-eared, big humped Brahmans although they have put me at a run up and over quite a few fences. Even though I will probably always have Brahman cattle, I honestly believe the Tulis are a great option to the Zebu especially here in Texas. We are in the final stages of getting our website finished which is CranorCattle.com and our email is [email protected]. You may also reach us by phone at 512-748-8150 with any questions. We look forward to working with and hearing from y’all in the future.

About fourteen years ago, a little seed was sown during a casual conversation with our auctioneering friend, Stephan Welz. As fellow cattle ranchers we had much in common and he asked us whether we had thought of using Tulis in our commercial breeding herd of Bonsmara-type cattle. From that tiny seed, a great love for the breed has sprouted and we are now the happy owners of a nucleus of stud

animals, purchased from Tom Jansen van Rensburg at his dispersal sale at Spekboom, Addo, in October 2009.

Much to our delight, five calves were born before the sale, one on the day of the sale, and three on our farm in early November 2009. Of those born, seven are heifers…the Lord knew we would be needing more heifers !!

Being novices regarding Stud Book procedures and requirements, it was quite a sharp learning curve to make sure newborns were weighed in time, with concerned mothers hovering nearby! Use your imagination and picture two almost elderly farmers, a rubber tyre-swing, a scale and a lot of sweat!!

We so enjoy the way these cattle trust us and respond to us when we check them or work with them in the kraal. We find them family-friendly, and as curious as our grandsons are. We love to sit among them, allowing them to approach, to smell and get to know us. Our city friends appreciate the experience of being close up and real with Tulis. There is no thought of being harmed when we walk among them. They respond to our call “Kom, Kom” when it is time to head off to the kraal, they know what is expected when they get there, and they know the way home again and will wait at the gate for us. The Rau immobilizer has made our work in the kraal so much easier – they are calmer since we have been using it. The regular checking in the camp has resulted in the calves becoming very tame. They are easy to find in the veld because they stay together in a group. At the coast, ticks are a serious problem, but they are managing to hold their own in spite of the tickload.

In November 2009, we attended the Inspector’s Course at Vleiplaatz, Murraysburg and were able to meet many of our fellow Tuli breeders. We are grateful for all the hard work done by those who organized the event and are looking forward to more of the same – although, maybe, they should grade these courses into those for beginners and another for those more experienced !! We appreciate the sense of ‘family’ we feel when we meet.

Our ten year old cow, SW 99 7, or ‘Blom’ as we call her, is quite a hog and has a particular penchant for mealie cob leaves. She watches carefully to see whether she’s in luck when we visit them and bellows a welcome when she sees us coming! The next photo shows her licking her lips after one such treat, next to the cab window of the bakkie. She even stuck her head inside to find more!!

We are happy to have found a breed that suits our retirement needs and look forward to many more golden years of farming with Tulis.Edie & Doug Galpin: Eagle’s Valley Stud, Kenton on Sea, Eastern Cape: 046 648 1641

The facts:• Anybody may import animals and

genetic material of an approved breed.• An applicant does not have to be a

member of the relevant breeders’ society, but:

• Such applicants will not be able to register any animals or progeny.

• All will be referred to the relevant breeders’ society if it involves an animal - or if the import is for genetic material from a donor that has been previously screened and approved by the society.

Copies of all import authorizations are sent to the relevant breed society and this information could be used to recruit new members

Applying to import or export an animal or genetic material:• Apply on the prescribed form that is

available from the office of the registrar, or at the breeders’ society.

• Take care to fill in all the required information to avoid delays.

• Ensure that either proof of payment of the prescribed administration fee or actual payment is included.

Application to import or export animals or genetic material can be sent directly to the registrar or can be screened and forwarded by the respective breeders’ society or registering authority as a service to members

This will save time where the genetic material in question has not been screened.

Note that all imports are subjected to positive identification. This includes full DNA for all genetic material (for semen, embryo and live animals)

If the exporting country does not have such a service, this can be done locally before release from quarantine.

IMPORTING ANIMALS FOR OTHER PURPOSES

This includes shows, sales, breeding and veterinary treatment and normally applies more to the equine industry.

• All animals must be positively identified in accordance with the Animal Identification Act, 2000 (Act No. 6 of 2002) or in accordance with the bylaws of the relevant society.

• Where applicable, animals must have a country identification mark.

• The relevant form must be completed.

EXPORTING ANIMALS AND GENETIC MATERIAL

• Nobody may export any animals or genetic material without an animal improvement authorization.

• No applications are processed without an inspection report from the relevant breeders’ society. This report will certify that the animals are either registered or non-registered and that they comply with the minimum standards for the breed.

This should also be seen as an opportunity for breed societies to provide a useful service to all owners of animals of the breed in question.

If all the prescribed information has been provided, the registrar’s office will process the application/s and forward the authorization/s to the Directorate: Veterinary service within the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF).

A copy of the authorization will be sent to the relevant breeders’ society and the relevant registering authority.

This information is strictly confidential.
