SUMATRA JAVA BALI KOMODO RINCA FLORES SULAWESI A A R R C C H H I I P P E E L L A A G G O O THE NEVER ENDING DESTINATION OF INDONESIA Dear Friends, Somewhere between heaven and earth ... all the tropical island cliches are present and correct: dazzling white- sand beaches fringed by coconut palms, turquoise waters and a coral reef. We live the tropical dream - snorkelling, feasting on fresh seafood, lounging or dancing under the stars. This archipelago is one of the most diverse and cultural biological environments on the planet. They call it the Emerald of the Equator, we call it the land of Raja Kelana. Welcome to Indonesia, Yours Sincerely, Iniindo Tours & Travel S S U U M M A A T T R R A A Nature is the primary attraction of Sumatra. There are jungles, volcanoes and lakes. The rain-forest of this island is so important that in 2006 no less than 25,000 square km was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and named The Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra. This area comprises three distinct national parks. Perhaps the most notable specific attraction is the endemic Sumatran Orangutan (smaller and rarer than the only other species of orangutan which is endemic to Borneo). These are restricted to the northern parts of the island and perhaps the easiest place to see them is at Bukit Lawang in the Gunung Leuser National Park. Rarer still are the tiny populations of critically endangered Sumatran Tiger and Sumatran Rhinoceros. The chances of casual visitor glimpsing one of these are slim, but you never know. Also in the north, Lake Toba is the world's largest volcanic lake and a popular stop off on the backpacker trail. In a nation of active volcanoes, Mount Kerinci in Kerinci Seblat National Park, is the highest of them all at some 3,805 metres.Trekking is an obvious attraction, with countless peaks to scale and real opportunities to get right away from it all. Offshore, Sumatra has some of the best surfing anywhere on earth with the Mentawai Islands and Nias being especially notable.

Nature is the primary attraction of Sumatra. There are jungles, volcanoes and lakes. The rain-forest of this island is so important that in 2006 no less than 25,000 square km was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and named The Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra. JJAAVVAA Java offers everything a somewhat adventurous traveler is looking for: two of world's great ancient monuments, volcanoes (all 121 of them), major national parks, rainforests, tea and rice plantations, large cities, big waves and even savanna. The scenery in most parts of Java is spectacular and, while the island is overpopulated, there are still plenty of unspoiled places. Even though the beaches are not very appealing in Java and tides can be fatal especially in south part of Java, in nearby archipelagos like Pulau Seribu or

Karimunjawa the traveler can find white sand beaches and corals islands. ¨ Anyer - beautiful beach, gateway to Krakatoa volcano ¨ Baluran National Park - savannah grasslands which will make you think you are in Africa ¨ Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park - spectacular volcanic scenery, home of the Tenggerese ¨ Borobudur - the largest ancient Buddhist temple, a serious contender for the world's eighth wonder ¨ Madura - large, remote, arid island and massively off the beaten path for visitors ¨ Mount Halimun Salak National Park - arguably the best and most complete rainforest area in Java, near Bogor ¨ Prambanan - remarkable ancient Hindu temple ¨ Sukamade - turtles come to lay their eggs virtually every night of the year ¨ Ujung Kulon National Park - amazing national park with unspoiled jungles, white sand beaches, corals and the

last examples of the Javanese Rhinoceros ¨ Trek in Ujung Kulon National Park and Mount Halimun Salak National Park, see excellent examples of rainforest

and wild animals. ¨ Dive in the pristine waters of the Karimunjawa islands. ¨ Rent a fisherman's boat and sail around the Kepulauan Seribu National Park archipelago. ¨ See the crater of a volcano real close at Tagkuban Perahu (in Bandung). ¨ Watch the sunrise at the breathtaking Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. ¨ Surf one of the world's great waves at G-Land near Banyuwangi. ¨ Travel from Jakarta to Yogyakarta by day train. Beautiful landscapes and a cheap and more relaxing way to travel

around Java. ¨ Visit the Dutch war cemeteries Menteng Pulo (central Jakarta) or Ancol (in the north of Jakarta by the sea). They

are haunting and quiet getaways from the bustling city. To visit Ancol, take a taxi and ask for "makam kehormatan Ancol".

¨ Visit Kebun Raya (botanical gardens) in Bogor. ¨ Wake up early to see the sunrise at the Borobudur temple near Yogyakarta. ¨ Watch a spell-binding evening performance of The Ramayana against the lit backdrop of magnificent Prambanan. ¨ Climb the Gunung Gede volcano. ¨ Play golf at the Merapi Golf Course in Yogyakarta. The active volcano Mount Merapi looms over the course just a

few miles away. ¨ Eat mie goreng from a street vendor ("kaki lima"). Try martabak. Eat ice-cream at Toko Oen in Malang. ¨ Visit the huge shopping malls at Jakarta. ¨ Enjoy a fine Sunday brunch in any Jakarta international hotel at an amazing value.

BBAALL II Bali, the famed Island of the Gods, with its varied landscape of hills and mountains, rugged coastlines and sandy beaches, lush rice terraces and barren volcanic hillsides all providing a picturesque backdrop to its colourful, deeply spiritual and unique culture, stakes a serious claim to be paradise on earth. The word "paradise" is used a lot in Bali and not without reason. The combination of friendly, hospitable people, a magnificently visual culture infused with spirituality and (not least) spectacular

beaches with great surfing and diving have made Bali Indonesia's unrivaled number one tourist attraction. Eighty percent of international visitors to Indonesia visit Bali and Bali alone.

The popularity is not without its flip sides—once paradisiacal Kuta has degenerated into a congested warren of concrete, touts and scammers extracting a living by overcharging tourists. The island's visibility has also drawn the unwanted attention of terrorists in 2002 and 2005; however Bali has managed to retain its magic. Bali is a wonderful destination with something for everyone, and though heavily travelled, it is still easy to find some peace and quiet, if you like. A consideration is the tourist season and Bali can get very crowded in July and August and again at

Christmas and New Year. Australians also visit during school holidays in early April, late June and late September, while domestic tourists from elsewhere in Indonesia visit during national holidays. Outside these peak seasons, Bali can be surprisingly quiet and good discounts on accommodation are often available. With world-class surfing and diving, a large number of cultural, historical and archaeological attractions, and an enormous range of accommodations, this is one of the world's most popular island destinations and one which consistently wins travel awards. Bali has something to offer a very broad market of visitors from young back-packers right through to the super-rich. ¨ Denpasar — a bustling city, the administrative centre and transport hub of the island but not a major tourist

destination ¨ Candidasa — a quiet coastal town, the Bali Aga and gateway to the east coast ¨ Kuta — surfer central, by far the most heavily developed area in Bali. Lots of shopping and night-life and the

centre of lower-end party culture on Bali ¨ Jimbaran — sea-side resorts, a nice sheltered beach and seafood restaurants south of Kuta ¨ Legian — located between Kuta and Seminyak; also the name of Kuta´s main street ¨ Lovina — beautiful black volcanic sand beaches and coral reefs ¨ Sanur — sea-side resorts and beaches popular with older families ¨ Seminyak — quieter, more upscale beachside resorts and villas just to the north of Legian, with some fashionable

upscale restaurants and trendy designer bars and dance clubs ¨ Ubud — the centre of art and dance in the foothills, with several museums, the monkey forest and lots of arts and

crafts shops ¨ Amed — an area of peaceful, traditional fishing villages featuring black sand beaches, coral reefs and excellent

diving ¨ Bedugul — nice lakes in the mountains, a golf course, the botanical gardens and the famous Ulun Danu Bratan

Temple ¨ Bukit Peninsula — the southernmost tip of Bali, with world class surfing, great beaches, and the can't-miss cliff-

hanging Uluwatu Temple ¨ Kintamani — active volcano Mount Batur, great mountain scenery, cooler temperatures and fruit growing ¨ Mount Agung — highest mountain in Bali and the mother temple of Besakih ¨ Nusa Dua — an enclave of high-end resorts and a long, golden sand beach ¨ Nusa Lembongan — good diving, snorkelling and surfing and a great place to relax ¨ Nusa Penida — wild, rugged and untamed and as off-the-beaten-path as you will get in Bali ¨ West Bali National Park — trekking, bird watching and diving in Bali's only substantial natural protected area

KKOOMMOODDOO,, RR IINNCCAA,, FFLLOORREESS Komodo National Park lies in the Wallacea Region of Indonesia, identified by WWF and Conservation International as a global conservation priority area, and is located in the center of the Indonesian archipelago, between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores. Komodo National Park includes three major islands: Komodo, Rinca and Padar, as well as numerous smaller islands creating a total surface area (marine and land) of more than 1,800 km2. As well as being home to the Komodo Dragon,

Page 4: Iniindo Archipelago Tour Brochure

also known as the Komodo Monitor, or Ora (to Indonesians), the park provides refuge for many other notable terrestrial species. Moreover, the Park includes one of the richest marine environments.

The main reasons to travel to Komodo National Park are the Komodo Dragons, the superb beaches and the unspoilt corals. Keep in mind that there are also wild pigs, monkeys and horses on Pulau Rinca, one of the two largest islands in the park. If you return by sea at night, you can also see legions of flying foxes (fruit bats whose wing span may exceed 4 feet) flying in the twilight sky.

At night on the Flores Sea, you also have a magnificent view of the stars. Komodo area is inhabited by more than a thousand different fish species, making it one of the world’s richest marine habitats. You may also swim in the Flores Sea on your incoming or outgoing boat trip to one of the islands. Beware of sharp corals on the sea floor near some of the small islands. ¨ Kanawa Island Diving, Kanawa Island, Flores (on Kanawa Island an hour out of Labuan Bajo on the edge of the

Komodo Marine Park). Based on Kanawa Island and working alongside Kanawa Beach Bungalows, 14 rustic bungalows located on the beach with restaurant and daily free transfer from Labuan Bajo. Offers daily 2 or 3 dive trips into the marine park as well as diving day and night from the beach on the house reef. A full range of PADI courses from Discover Scuba to Divemaster. The position of the island on the edge of the marine park means a saving on travel time to the dive sites in the central and northern areas of Komodo Marine Park.

¨ Komodo Liveaboards (Komodo Liveaboards). Komodo Dive Liveaboards (Rinca Islands Liveaboard) cruise gives

divers the ability to explore some of the most pristine and diverse marine habitats on the planet, while living right on the Komodo Liveaboard diving boat.

¨ Komodo Kayaking, Eco-Lodge hotel. Many of the islands in the chain are either inaccessible to large boats or

difficult to access. However with a sea kayak, you can travel anywhere you like. Into small grottos and bays, around rocky points and slowly above shallow reefs brimming with fish.

¨ Sea Kayaking and SUP'ing Komodo Islands. There are dozens of uninhabited islands within and just outside the

Komodo National Park. Many of these are only accessible by unmotorised vessels such as sea kayaks and SUP's. These trips are the only full supported expeditions in the park using proper expedition style sea kayaks, not sit on tops. This agency uses these sit in kayaks as the seas can get turn from tranquil to treacherous quite quickly, and a proper sea kayak is the only vessel that can handle it safely. They also have a 20-meter support boat. People taking this trip sleep on isolated beaches by pristine reefs, stay in safari style tents with bush showers and toilets available, and eat wonderful Indonesian cuisine. There are 3-day and 5-day sea kayak and SUP trips all year round with the best times of year for paddling between April and November.

¨ Wicked Diving, Komodo. Small dive center in Labuan Bajo operating their own Komodo liveaboard for 3 and 6

day tours. Offering daytrips, training and snorkeling tours.

TTAANNAA TTOORRAAJJAA Tana Toraja, literally "Torajaland", is a highland region of Southern Sulawesi in Indonesia. Tana Toraja, the famed "Land of The Heavenly Kings", lies about 328 km north of Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi Province, in the central highlands of South Sulawesi. The land of the Toraja people, many notionally Christian but most in practice animist, is above all famed for their spectacular (and rather gruesome) burial rites. After a person's death, the body is kept — often for several years — while money is saved to pay for the actual funeral ceremony,

known as tomate. During the festival, which may last up to a week, ritual dances and buffalo fights are held, and buffaloes and pigs are slaughtered to ferry the soul of the deceased to the afterlife (puya). The deceased is then finally buried either

Page 5: Iniindo Archipelago Tour Brochure

in a small cave, often with a tau-tau effigy placed in front, inside a hollow tree or even left exposed to the elements in a bamboo frame hanging from a cliff. Tana Toraja has unique culture set in stunning scenery. Globalisation and tourism may have impact, but if you venture away from the tarmac roads you will find soon a way of life that has not changed much in the last 100 years.

Traditional Tongkonan houses stand proudly in this setting. These intricately decorated houses with upward-sloping roofs are the center of all Aluktodolo ( Torajan religion before the coming of missionaries; the ancestors belief ) rites; from storing the harvest in the carved rice barns, "alang", to slaughtering sacred water buffaloes at a week or more-funeral ceremonies. Tana Toraja's beauty is also reflected in its people. Although they are devoutly Christian ( there are small number of Moslems especially in the southern area), they combine this religious belief

with magic and mysticism, and welcome visitors to witness their ceremonies. Tana toraja is a sleepy rural region cultivating rice, cacao, coffee, and clove most of the year. Toraja's arabica coffee carries a high reputation and is something that visitors may be interested in trying. These all change during the dry season,, from June until September, when Children are home from school, the rice is harvested and it's time for a "rambu solo' ", a complex funeral ceremony of the ancestors. During the time, Rantepao is transformed into a major tourist resort for national and international visitors. ¨ Pallawa — Pallawa site is also a compound of houses and granaries. In total there are 11 houses and 15

granaries. ¨ Bori Parinding — The site of Bori Parinding is a combination of ceremonial grounds and burials. The ceremonial

ground is an open space used for traditional ceremonies, including rituals for the dead and thanksgiving. ¨ Kande Api — The site of Kande Api consists of a compound of houses and granaries, ceremonial ground and

burial places. ¨ Nanggala — Nanggala site is principally a compound of 2 houses (tongkonan) and 16 granaries (alang), arranged

in rows and aligned east-west. ¨ Buntu Pune — Formerly, the sites of Buntu Pune and Rante Karassik belonged to one integrated settlement. ¨ Rante Karassik — The site of Rante Karassik is a ceremonial ground on a sloping hill. ¨ Ke'te Kesu' — Among the nominated sites, Ke'te' Kesu' is the most complete settlement. The site consists of a

compound of houses and granaries, burial place, ceremonial ground, ricefields and water-buffalo pasture. ¨ Pala' Toke' — The site of Pala Toke is principally a burial place located on a towering limestone hill, from where a

rice field extends to the north, east and west. ¨ Londa — Londa is a grave site where two methods of burial are customary. ¨ Lemo — Lemo is also a cliff burial site with galleries of ancestor statues. ¨ Tumakke — The site of Tumakke displays a distinctive traditional house built on a raised terrace.

UUJJUUNNGG PPAANNDDAANNGG

Makassar, also known as Ujung Pandang, is the capital of South Sulawesi province and the largest city on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. ¨ Losari Beach (Pantai Losari) is the name

of long stretch of waterfront in the middle of the city. A very nice sunset view. Food stalls set up every night here.

¨ Fort Rotterdam is an old fortress from Dutch colonial days. A small donation is expected of around Rp 10,000, and they will insist you sign a guestbook. Note if

you are a foreigner, you will be the biggest tourist attraction there, and expect to spend at least half your time taking pictures with curious local residents and kids from small town Sulawesi on field trips. The friendly attitude makes this experience quite fun, and you can learn a lot about Sulawesi as well from it.

¨ Pulau Khayangan is a small island about 20 minutes away by boat from central Makassar. ¨ Pulau Samalona is a beautiful white sandy island with good diving. Trip from Makassar takes 30-45 minutes, (1

boat can carry 2-8 people).
